Eagles sign pass rush specialist Clemons

The Eagles look to be building an already top 10 defense into an even better one. This division is freaking bad arss. He has 8 sacks last season for freaking Oakland. I expect to see some 3-4 with the Eagles hybrid LBrs this season.

CLEMONS JOINS EAGLES

phi.gif

Having added prized cornerback Asante Samuel to their secondary on Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday will bolster their pass rush by signing unrestricted free agent linebacker/defensive end Chris Clemons of the Oakland Raiders.

ESPN.com has learned that Clemons reached a Friday night contract agreement. He and agent Don Henderson will fly to Philadelphia on Saturday to sign the contract, details of which were not yet available.

With eight sacks for the Raiders in 2007, when he was principally used as a situational pass rusher, Clemons is the leading sacker in the unrestricted free agent pool.

Clemons, 26, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2003 with the Washington Redskins. The former University of Georgia star wasn't even in the NFL in 2006 and was signed by the Raiders almost as an afterthought. In 36 games, he has 36 tackles and 13 sacks.

Not scared of him. It's not like he's coming off multiple pro bowls or anything.

Thats defense of theirs has a lot of potential so far. They also drafted a kid in the second round last season by the name of Victor Abiamiri. He is a big DE. I would expect them to get him on the field this season like they did Bunkley.

The Redskins don't need a situational specialist, but rather a two-way DE that can stay on the field vs. the run AND the pass. Essentially, to replace Phillip Daniels.

Chris Wilson is a younger, cheaper version of Chris Clemons :)

Because the Redskins have trouble identifying inhouse talent.

Exactly. The guy had 8 sacks last year not playing that much. We had him on the roster and rather than keep him on IR for a year when he was making the minimum we cut him.

I read he missed the '06 season in Oakland with a knee injury.

Yeah-the guy has some outstanding talent, but he seems to have a history with injuries. A good pickup by the Eagles, but nonetheless he seems like only a situational, albeit undersized guy.

5 years $18.5 million not sure on the structure not a bad signing but seriously Chris Clemons is the kind of guy that comes along quite often but he is lucky that he found his niche and the guy is getting paid good for him, he definatly play the role of Kerse but much cheaper.

HE is overpaid now that is all tht matters. The Iggles are throwing money away IMO this year. I happy it is them and not us. :D

I don't know if they are throwing money away. They had 30 million in cap room to spend. Clemons will be strictly a 3rd down pass rusher from either DE or LBr. He wont be on the field on running downs.

Dunno who'll be their starting LDE-Juqua Thomas is only a situation guy too(as he is undersized as well). Victor whatever his name may get the chance(their 2nd rounder last year), dunno.

I would almost bet Victor Abiamiri will start next season just like Bunkley started his second year. They still have Darren Howard and McDougle but I expect McDougle to get cut.

I don't get it...we were the ones who originally gave this guy his chance. He looked promising that year, and we had a gaping hole at WLB in the following offseason just waiting for him to take it. He was the fan favorite to take over Holdman's spot going into 06. Apparently, the coaching staff had its doubts, as they drafted Rocky McIntosh that spring.

Unfortunately, Clemons didn't show much in the offseason. We tried moving him to SLB, but he was struggling to make the team. Then he had that injury during the preseason, so we just said screw it. There's a quote from Gregg Williams (I believe) that mentioned that he wasn't going to make the 53 man roster even before the injury.

06 was hell, but it turns out we did the right thing. We got a situational pass rusher in Chris Wilson, and in Rocky McIntosh we've got everything we needed Clemons to be (except these freakin knee problems).
