Draft Picks Under Snyder's Ownership - Where Are They Now?

TK

Recommended Posts

While its hard to draw any conclusions from that without something to compare it to, heres one eye opening thing I noticed:

Not counting the most recent 3 years, the previous 5 drafts produced a grand total of 4 players who are still on the Redskins roster. Yet the roster is 53 players strong. 48 of those spots have had to be filled by FAs, and very young undeveloped players. Out of those 4, two are starters. Ouch.

I also think there is one other thing we can take away from this. This is a list of draft picks. Actual picks that we had. There are alot of people clamoring to keep all of our picks. The problem with this list is not that we didnt HAVE the picks, its that the people we picked most of the time werent any good. Its not signing FAs or trading away picks, or not trading away picks thats are problem. Its player evaluation. Clearly this FO has failed in that since 2000. There have been some great picks, and great signings, but thats been the exception, not the rule.

Wow, that is an eye opening list. Some of the guys I thought were out of the league are still plugging along. Gibran Hamdan?

Some of the other guys I look at and think . And still others, I look at and say 'atta guy', like Rock. But there are more 's than 'atta guy's' :silly:

Thanks for putting this together

I think if you looked at every teams drafting over the same period you'd get the same thing. Maybe we'd have a couple extra ones because of Spurrier...good god how can someone be so college smart and so pro braindead...

5. Wilson, Mark, OL, California RAIDERS

6. Molinaro, Jim, OL, Notre Dame COWBOYS

For some reason I find these interesting.

The two guys that Gibbs assumedly let Buges pick with his only day two picks that first year back. They were talked about as though they were the future cornerstones on ES for a little while.

I had no idea either were even still in the league.

Does this mean Buges picked some decent guys?

It's not the front office's fault that Sean Taylor is no longer on the roster and no longer a starter. It would have been the right and classy thing to do to point that out in your post, but perhaps you were more interested in proving a point.

Also, we drafted Dockery in the 3rd round of '03. He left and signed a massive contract elsewhere. That doesn't make him a bad pick.

There are alot of people clamoring to keep all of our picks. The problem with this list is not that we didnt HAVE the picks, its that the people we picked most of the time werent any good.

Two of our last four drafts ('04 and '06) have been phenomenal, particularly considering the limited number of picks we had to work with. The only thing that might have made those drafts better would have been if we had MORE picks. In the "lesser" two drafts of the last four years ('05 and '07), we still brought in Rogers, Campbell and Landry.

In '04, half of the players we picked became Pro Bowlers. Again, would have been nice to have had even more picks.

You're also overlooking the undrafted guys who have been major contributors (Heyer, Lorenzo Alexander, Chris Wilson, etc.). Someone is doing their job when guys like that pan out.

Anyone feel like putting together a Free Agent list like this for a compare & contrast? :)

I was thinking about taking you up on this offer. Even pulled up a couple ESPN transactions list to compile the free agents. Then, I noticed redskins.com has some good info. Note: the article also has a paragraph recap on the contributions of the players signed and their current status in the NFL. Also, I added some trades, as they weren't covered, and some other minor edits by comparing to the ESPN pages. Interesting review. http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=34658

Edit - I had already started converting the redskins.com article into this post before it was posted in the thread. Anyhow, that missed a few names, which I've included. Someone else can see where everyone is now. :)

Well there it's partially done. Anyone feel like adding on where they are now?

Just how lazy are you?

In the time it's taken you to give your 3 replies in this thread, you could have already done it AND gotten one more post closer to getting rid of that waterboy avatar. :)

Eh I'm tired. I was planning on doing it if no one else did after a while though. And on the Waterboy thing, 3 posts is better than one haha :)

TK, wouldn't you say the first draft of Gibbs was solid, with two of our four picks becoming Pro Bowlers? That's not a bad clip even if you have all seven picks.

After looking at it again:

2004 - Gibbs

1. Taylor, Sean, S, Miami (Fla.) R.I.P.

3. Cooley, Chris, TE, Utah State

5. Wilson, Mark, OL, California RAIDERS

6. Molinaro, Jim, OL, Notre Dame COWBOYS

I'm more tempted to say it's more of a 'six in one hand, half dozen in the other' type of draft. You have 2 Pro Bowlers, yes. Sean was a no brainer at #5. Cooley was an unknown by many here. Wilson & Molinaro are kinda surprising as they're still in the League. But have they been developed into starters? Kind of a toss up, but that bad of a draft for Joe's first year back.

If someone else is in the middle of it and posts it while I'm in the middle of it I'm gonna be pissed off lol. But yea I'm starting on it now haha.

If you want a more complete list of names (might also be easier to list when you're done), you can see my post a few above.

3. Spam is strictly prohibited. The following examples constitute spam:

  • Very short posts that do not add value to the topic. Example: posts with only the words, "i dunno," or "lol cool," can be considered spam. If that is the only contribution you make to the discussion, this is not the place for you.
  • Double Posting. A double post constitutes back-to-back posts by the same member. The second post may be considered spam. If you submit a post and realize that you have made a mistake or would like to elaborate further, please use the "edit" button/function (located at the lower right of each post) to edit the original post rather than create a new one for that purpose. An exception to the rule applies to a situation where a member wants to address the content of separate individual posts from different members. For example, the first point addresses the content of member A's post; the subsequent post addresses the content of member B's post.
  • Posts that serve no purpose other than to increase one's post count are considered spam. For example, if someone asks a question and you reply just to say you don't know the answer, or create "test" threads or posts, this will be considered spam. If you want to test your signature picture/text, you can do that in any thread where you have already posted. Every time you edit and save a change in your Profile, simply hit your browser’s "refresh" button in a thread in which you have posted. Your account will have been updated across every post you have ever written.

And ha.

Hey 21, do you know the year when Vinny became involved with the whole draft process? It would be pretty cool to see a comparison (before/after) and to see what we can expect in april

Define 'involved'.

Sartz is out of the league right now after rehabbing his hamstring injury.

He'll show up in someones camp and make at least a PS if healthy this year.

I was thinking he received the ol injury settlement deal. NFL.com really needs to update theirselves. They still J. Palmer listed as being a Redskin when Cinci picked him up a month or two ago.
