so im going to jamaica this summer for a friends wedding. I have been to cuba and dominican.

I will be staying in montego bay. has anyone here been before? is it at all similar to the rest of the caribbean? are there any weird things i should be aware of?

I dont smoke pot, but i hear that every second person there offers you some weed. I hope that is not the case.

I hope to get some feedback, thanks guys!

Was there last november, they DO try and sell you weed the minute you get out of the airport, and the airport we flew into was Montego bay, have fun

We stayed in RunAway Bay about 1½ hours from MB

If you like sweet drinks, the jamaican rum cream is teh bomb, as is the jamaican banana rum cream. Dirty Banannas are good too

As far as wierd things to look out for...

Watch out for Jamaican hedonism... unless you're into that kind of thing (they're pretty much freaky swingers).

I recall when Don from Don & Mike spoke of his vacation to Jamaica, there was a couple that was at a non hedonist resort because the actual hedonist resort was booked. They were eyeing him and his woman. ...So even if you aren't at a hedonist resort doesn't mean you won't encounter some

We've been to Jamaica a couple of times, (MoBay and Negril), and DButz is spot-on.

Don't worry about the ganja. Just tell them "No thanks, I'm good" and move on. Most of the time, they'll just smile and tell you to have a nice day.

A couple of years ago, me, my wife, and my friends wife were strolling down the beach and this guy looked us over and says to me, "Hey Mon! I got it all...smoke, coke and viagra!"

Jamaicans are nice people....just treat everyone with respect, and you'll be fine....

I went to Mo Bay (Montego Bay) last year.

Yes, not just people on the street, but store merchants and cab drivers will hit you up to buy Pot too. You will notice most if not all the cabs have very dark tint on their cars so they can drive you around while you smoke some that you buy from the cab drivers.

If you stick to the resorts and go shopping around the popular shopping areas, you will be fine.

Just don’t go off by yourself wondering around outside of said resorts or shopping areas.

The water is beautiful, the beaches were somewhat clean and the people are friendly.

I have been to Montego Bay twice, all I can say is enjoy the sun and festivities that the resort has to offer. Tourists have no business running around downtown Montego Bay.

Which resort are you going to?

What resort are you staying at?

We stopped in MoBay last year on our cruise... and I would agree with what everyone else said. We just got a taxi from the port and went straight to an all-inlcusive resort the day. Beautiful beaches, too much liquor and a water slide made for a fab day :)

The country is quite beautiful. Clear water, forested mountains, white beaches. The exchange rate is just nuts. I paid $500 for four beers at a roadside bar. $400 for the beer and left a $100 tip. Of course it was about $6.00 American, but it felt swell at the time.

It is sadly and amazingly poor. Just grinding poverty all over. We went to White House and had a blast, but I noticed that all our off property trips included a sort of body guard who went with us every place we went.

Just be careful and you should be fine. Have a great trip and appreceate all we have when you get back.

Yeah, I went to an ATM in downtown Mobay, just outside of Margaritaville. Our body gaurd sat in the car while I went into this small enclosure. With in seconds of entering the locked ATM room there were three or four locals standing outside of the ATM.

My guess is they were not waiting to use the ATM, the body gaurd got out of the car and chased them away. One wrong move and you could easily get mugged or worse.

The resorts offer a ton of fun, they are safe and you will still get the feel of Jamaica from the merchants who paddle up on their surf boards loaded with Jamaican style gifts.

I have been and I will never go back! Yeah, every other person tries to sell you weed, and if you have long hair like I do, they don't believe you when you say you don't want it. They will hound you and hound you.

We also tried to go shopping at a flea market type place. We got lost in a flea market type place and we asked a few people for the way out and everyone told us to go a certain way. Well that way lead us deeper and deeper into the marketplace. It was huge and people kept grabbing (literally) my wife and I trying to get money for useless junk. We eventually found our way out of there and we learned a very valuable lesson.

My wife and I went for our honeymoon. People were very nice and it was beautiful. I am also in with the "stay at the resort" crowd. We went to a place where you could climb the falls (waterfall) that had a sales village at the exit. The people were extremely agressive and I even had a guy start taking my watch off of my wrist to trade it for some crap. It was probably one of the worst half hours of my life in that village. We will go back to Jamaica, but we will not leave the resort.

We stayed at Sandals.

we went and stayed at an all inclusive resort in montego bay, the country is great if you stay on the resort. we went and did the waterfall thing, which was awesome, but it was 6 hours in a car. the roads and traffic suck there. Jamaica was a nice place to visit but I prob wont be going back, not to montego bay at least.

Been there, Montego Bay half a dozen times starting in the 80's. Back then (I was Single) when our ship pulled in and I took leave, I'd use a fake Jamaican accent and enjoy being part of the hedonism with hotties from Europe and States

6 Hours? There is one called Dunns River Falls near Ocho Rios that we went on, thats about 2 hours from Montego bay, we stayed at a resort 30 mins from it. The Margaritaville in Ocho Rios was cool and we watched the Eagles Skins game there this past year, they had a TV in the bar area upstairs and they got the game on for us, took em a while though to figure out the direct tv controls lol

BTW on most of the resorts they have American funds money machines, the surcharge is like $9 tho, ouch

thanks for the offer F'N.

Also, should I convert my money into jamiacan money, or chane it to american?

There is no need they accept american $$, and the exchange rate sucks, you get like 70 cents in jamaican $$ on the american dollar. (roughly)

Also like i said above most resorts have american $$ machines.
