What does the word "socialism" mean to you?

I stay away from people that are book smart. Thank you very much.

Which is probably your first problem.

At least be intellectually honest with yourself for a moment. "MAYBE" China is temporarily disregarding true Communist principals in order to gain sway in the world community. And in its place the "MAY" be presenting the illusion of private business making a profit.

But don't dumb down this discussion by telling me that China is both Communist AND Capitalistic.

I stated a fact. You replied with a laughing smiley. I furthered my argument. You replied with a laughing smiley. I supported my case. You accuse me of dumbing down the argument because you can't actually counter it...and you replied with a laughing smiley. Does the laughing smiley make you feel more secure?

China's communists have long since given up on true communism. In the interests of profit and wealth, property is respected more than human life and workers are exploited more than in any other country. Their cheap labor is an attack on our civil societies.

Right, they've adopted capitalism.

345,000 out of China — Population: 1,321,851,888

Thats less than 3% of the population. Not Good.

You have a much better chance of becoming a millionaire in a True Capitalist society.

Well really that is what true capitalism is really about. There is not much regard for workers. Monopolies occur regularly. Only Gov. regulation keeps this from happening.

I think capitalism is the best economic system, but at it's core it's brutal and needs regulation to reach its potential.

The nation still lacks freedom of speech or press and operates under a one party rule. Dissenters are arrested and imprisoned based on the party's decision, treatement of protesters is brutal, civil liberties are nil, labor unions are non-existent. That's communist.

As I said, the political system of communism and the economic system of socialism are not wedded.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you are saying. Forgive me, its the laughing smilies. It makes it hard for me to take you seriously.

Are we arguing over whether or not China is capitalist, or whether or not China is communist?

You keep on saying China is capitalist, I find that funny.

Less than 3% of their population are millionaires, not good considering how many people live there. Dude, basically if your succesful in China, the government is taking almost all of your money.

So capitalism is dependent on the number of millionaires per capita you have? What's the cutoff?

Here, read this. I assume the Wall Street Journal would be a reliable source of economic information?

I know this is old, however it should help put it into perspective.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/WhereTheMillionairesAreNow.aspx

(2005/2006) Growth rank

United States

4,585,000- Millionaires

301,139,947 - Population

10% Change

China

310,000 Millionaires

1,321,851,888 - Population

39% Changes

This seems to be supporting my point. China is number one in growth rates. They had the highest change. Are you trying to say that you cannot be capitalist until you meet a certain quota of millionaires?

To me

Capitalism = The American Dream (yes more millionaires)

People like yourself might not believe it exists. However the last thing I want to do is live in a socialist economy where I get taxed more so the government can provide more freebie handouts for people who sit on their ass all day.

In China the only way you can become a millionaire is if you are very well educated. In the United States you are rewarded for your hard work, it doesn't matter if you mow grass or own a bank.

Well, if your definition of capitalism means, "has as many or more millionaires per capita than the US," then I suppose a lot of countries aren't capitalist. However, I am operating off the definition:

"Capitalism refers to an economic and social system in which the means of production are predominantly privately owned and operated, and in which investments, distribution, income, production and pricing of goods and services are determined through the operation of a market economy. "
