With Gibbs gone; in your opinion, will players like J. Thrash and J. Jansen...

make the team in 08?

I was watching our November battle against the Eagles the other night and was amazed all over again at just how valuable James Thrash is to our team. He was incredible in that game. And when you think about it, all he ever really does is produce when he is on the field.

Then, I thought of Jon Jansen. IMHO, before he got hurt he was not playing very well at all.

Both players were and still are loved by Joe Gibbs. But, with a new head coach on his way and both players getting up there in age, will either of them make the cut in 08?

Sorry if this has been discussed. I haven't been around a lot lately.

theyll stay, thrash-Special teams and Jansen is solid. Jansen was here before Gibbs and Thrash had an earlier stint with the Skins before he went to the Eagles. While I think Gibbs had a good bond with them, they made the team because they can play football.
I can understand your reasoning where Thrash is concerned as far as contributing to teams. In fact, I believe that he is still valuable at the WR position.

However, maybe it's just my feeble, old mind, but I just can't remember the last time that Jansen has really contributed to the team. I know that he has been hurt, but when he came back from injury this past season he looked awful.

Jansen needs to restructure and become a great back up and retire with a team and fanbase that loves him. It would be a win/win situation. I doubt he is looking for "Show me the Money" and he knows damn well he gets paid handsomely. I could be wrong, but im willing to bet that a team and fanbase that loves him is more important then shipping out and moving to another team for the twilight of his career.

Here's to hoping Jansen shares these viewes.

I'll second that ... and Thrash already makes something like the vet minimum. So if he shows up in camp and performs well, he'll make the team since he is cheap and valuable to ST's.

Jansen, I hope realizes he only has a couple years left and will restructure to retire as a skin. We will need him at some point next year, regardless of whether he starts in week 1 or not.

No doubt about Thrash.

And I agree that restructuring would be Jansen's best bet to make the team once again. Because who knows who our new head coach is going to be. And if all the new coach has to go on is recent film of Jansen and coach Bugel's praises, Jansen may be in trouble. Although I am sure that Joe Gibbs will endorse Jansen also.

I think Jansen is a gimme to make the team unless they got for a RT in the first two rounds of the draft. For all the progress Heyer made this year, he is still not Jansen in either pass blocking or run blocking (especially run blocking). Even if Buges were to decide that Heyer is the starter on the right side we would still need quality depth at that spot so I don't see Jansen going anywhere at all.

Thrash could possibily get caught in a numbers/youth game. Sure he works cheap for a guy with his years in the league but that is really not cheap compared to a second or third year guy. Mix came on strong in ST play late in the year while Thrash was out with the ankle injury. Add to that Moss, ARE, Caldwell and whoever gets drafted or brought in during FA and I am just not sure there is space for Thrash left on the roster. Regardless of who is brought in or drafted, Moss will start. ARE drops no lower than 3rd on the depth chart and Caldwell makes a pretty good 4th option while being younger and healthier than Thrash. Throw in an off season of work for Mix with the offense and I am concerned that Thrash is in trouble. I rather like him and would like to see him stay but I am not sure a new coach will agree and this team needs to get younger and cheaper.

You have strong points about everything concerning Thrash.

However, the comment that I highlighted with regards to Heyer being Jansen; the problem with that is, which Jansen are you comparing Heyer to? The Jansen of old? Or the Jansen that has been plagued with injuries and has not played well for the last few seasons?

The problem is, the Jansen of 2006 is still probably better than the Heyer of 2007. Heyer still has a lot of work to do to get to that level.

I think Thrash not only is a good special teams player but is a decent enough WR to provide depth...

he shouldnt be starting or in the top 3 WRs but he is a decent and cheap 4th and depth guy...

I would say that Jansen stays for sure.. if healthy he is still a good player, just not the force he once was..

Very true.

Don't get me wrong though, I wasn't endorsing Heyer. I was saying that Jansen just hasn't looked like the Jon Jansen that most of us know and love for at least four seasons now.
