Continuing to add to a staff that still doesn't have a head coach, the Redskins have reached an agreement in principle to hire veteran NFL assistant Larry Brooks as their defensive line coach.

The pending addition of Brooks, which will be finalized shortly, essentially completes the revamped Washington staff, except for one glaring exception.

Owner Daniel Snyder has yet to settle on a head coach to lead the staff, and will not name a successor to the retired Joe Gibbs until next Monday at the earliest.

Brooks, 57, was out of the league in 2007, and most recently served as the Arizona Cardinals' defensive line coach for the 2006 season. But he is regarded as a top-notch assistant, possesses 21 years of experience as a line coach, and is close to new Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache.

Primarily in charge of the defensive line, Blache was promoted to coordinator on Saturday, when the Redskins fired Gregg Williams from that position. Blache and Brooks worked together on staffs in Green Bay and Chicago. When Blache was the Bears' defensive coordinator in 2003, Brooks was his line coach.

Brooks was a standout defensive lineman for the Los Angeles Rams for 11 seasons (1972-82), and was chosen to play in five Pro Bowl games.

After his retirement, Brooks worked as an assistant coach with the Rams for eight seasons (1983-90). His resume also includes stops at Green Bay (1994-98), Seattle (1999-2002), Chicago (2003), Detroit (2004-2005), and Arizona (2006).

Blache had the input...no surprise there.

I'm still thinking this was run past the 'candidates.'

I am back to thinking that this is all dog and pony show and the HC is already hired practically.

Why would any respectable coach come here with no input on his staff whatsoever?

The fans, the media and the sports world in general maybe baffled, but I ain't buying the fact that anyone otherthan a puppet would enter into such a situation and if that is true, Gibbs had less effect on Snyder than I had hoped.

I would say run past the HC. I believe they have the guy already and are just waiting to announce Steve Mariucci.

As stated Larry Brooks is a Blache guy, which to me means Blache is personally building the defense. I see him taking over GW's role of running that side of the ball. This actually is like continuity because Brooks has worked with Blache and he takes over Blache's position. Not bad, Blache did more with that group of D Linemen than many had expected, myself included.

We better have a solid D because the O is going to be pretty ugly for a while. Like it has been for a while. :(

I too think that the coach has been decided and really the only reason it hasn't been announced is that they aren't allowed to hire him yet as he's coaching a game this Sunday. I could be way off here, but I really think that Spagnuolo will be our next HC.

Nah, this has Mooch written all over it.

I agree.....with the caveat that this ONLY makes sense for a HC candidate who cannot be signed NOW.

The problem with that theory is that they haven't interviewed him yet. If they had and they were waiting to do a second interview, it would be easier to believe.

I do agree that the HC has been determined and Snyder is just waiting until after the SB to announce it. And I agree with Zhouse, I really like the staff they're putting together.

agree...with one caveat... :) ...Zorn has zero, nada, zilch experience as an O-coordinator.......doesn't that sort of "lean" the team in the direction of hiring an HC with offense as his primary history ticket?

Yeah, but Mariucci is pretty good at that 'offense thingy'... ;)

I'd be excited if SM is our coach.

BTW, isn't there a big, free-agent WR in Detroit right now?

I think Snyder already knows who the HC will be. He's just sitting through the bureaucracy right now.

Forget you all you whiners, I'm excited about the new staff.

I am too...i like the Zorn hire and i like Blanche a lot...i never wanted GW as HC and i wanted Saunders gone a year ago

Me to, I'm looking forward to seeing our new look Redskins.

Me too. I'm saddened it didn't work out with Gregg and Al, but I'm also very excited at the prospect of Jason running the WCO, something he's run successfully before.

Maybe we'll see the explosive offense we were expecting when Al first came to town. :fingersx:

wow, so basically the HC will just hold a clip board while Vinny does all of the moves himself...

what a model franchsie we are.

 So true. I'm actually stunned that Danny hasn't named himself head coach yet. Really.

But yeah, in all seriousness we are definitely writing the book on what NOT to do, or how NOT to run an NFL franchise.

There is a very real chance that DS is holding off his announcement of Jim Fassel in order to let the negative passion against him die down. The first step was to let GW go, eliminating him in the minds of players and fans as an option. Within hours of the announcement this board started to see a more positive voice (yes, small at first) regarding Snyder, Fassel and other options. The trend has continued and although the majority are still negative towards Snyder's leadership the numbers are improving for him. The longer we don't have a head coach the more fans clamor for anyone to be annointed. Even Steve Babyouchi has supporters here. I started calling him that because of the way he whined when Spurrier spanked him in Japan. Not a leader of men, but I digress. The point is that Snyder knows that most fans will come around and that giving everyone time to vent and get over it will help when the new coach is announced.
