Three Weeks Ago...Three Weeks From Now

Just 3 weeks ago

  • we were one of the hottest teams in the league
  • our HOF coach had gone from being routinely ripped earlier in the year to being almost universally praised for bringing the team together in the face of the unspeakable loss of ST
  • it looked like we had learned from our over-spending free-agent lust, as our recent additions looked like money well spent
  • and we had a decent stack of draft picks at our disposal for the first time in a while, helping many of us feel 08 would be better than 07 (give or take our usual salary cap issues in the off-season).

Now, 3 short weeks later

  • we were knocked out of the playoffs in a game we reasonably could have won
  • our HOF coach has stepped down
  • our 'heir apparent' appears to have little to no chance of getting the job
  • Vinny C has been elevated to 'the man' on all things football related, but not really (Note: I haven't been a Dan Snyder-basher in the past, but I've got to admit that I'm developing a better appreciation for why others may be.)
  • we fans are being treated like mushrooms (I mean, come on--who you are/are not interviewing is not exactly a state secret. It's not like the rest of the league are going to fire their coaches to snap up the people we're talking to.)
  • apparently, the players and the current coaching staff are also on mushroom duty
  • it sounds like the rest of the league see our organization a joke in a way that has not been true since at least the 1960s.

So this thread is about 3 weeks from now. What will be the state of the Redskins around Valentine's Day?

What do we think? (think, not just hope)

Wow, a well thought out and fullly developed original premise for a thread with no spazzing, and it's promoting thoughtful replies. What are you trying to pull?

Wish I had the time Doc, but my hands are full with the opposite of this. :)

Hope you get some worthy repsonse on this but odds may be slim. :(

My hope is that three weeks from now the next head coach of the Washington Redskins is well on his way to repairing the damage done as a result of this hiring process - contacting players left uncertain about the future, talking with coaches left in the dark too (both those destined to remain on staff for reassurance, and those to be let go for an explanation), and assuring the fans that he will get this franchise on the right track quickly. I hope he's up to the task, both on an interpersonal and a football level.

Man, that's a cold slap of reality. The high point was Anthony Mix running that kickoff recovery into the Seattle end zone for an apparent touchdown. The fall since that moment has been momentous.

Wow, Dan. I never thought of it like that. It really has been nothing but a complete downward spiral since the Anthony Mix recovery/return play.

In 3 weeks I see:

Spagnuolo will interview and leverage himself a big raise in pay.....to stay in NY.

McDaniels won't even lower himself to play such games.

By this point the rest of the coaching staff will have gone their own ways having been totally alienated.

It will be alleged that Jerry Gray kicked Vinny's dog.

A phone call will be made to Norv Turner with the hopes of offering him a job, but then they'll remember he's under contract and play it off like they just dialed the wrong number.

Baghdad Bob will be appointed Press chief.

After several hours of consulting with Al Davis, we finally hire Fassel because he's the only person who will come in for an interview. He's hastily signed to a 10 year 100 billion dollar contract for fear of losing him to take the offer to be Coastal Carolina's WR consultant.

Hey, if we hire Spags as our HC and already hired Zorn as our OC, I am thrilled. Both are new at their positions, so come on Skins fans things are looking up from a very new perspective.

I agree, but why on Earth want to come to this developing MESS of a situation? If he stays in NY, he will be HC within 2 more seasons. Because the next time they slump, Coughlin is gone. He would have been gone this season had they not won a playoff game. He is extremely lucky right now.

Yes, whoever the next coach is, there will be a lot of tremendous amount of work for him to do. You can pin the blame on the owner, you can pin the blame on the media, on the coaches, on the fans, on Joe Gibbs himself if you want. Regardless of what caused it, the situation has become a large mess, there is no denying that. What truly matters now is cleaning up that mess.

The next head coach would have to be great from the start. Not the start of the season or training camp, but great from the first introductory press conference onward. It's not going to be easy for whoever the next coach is. There is a lot of tension that needs to be allayed, and a lot of relationships that need to be repaired.

Much appreciation for the thread support.

I just keep shaking my head, because we used to be one of the elite, class organizations of the league. And in December it felt like things were finally merging back onto that road. I'm a HUGE Joe Gibbs fan, but even I can admit that there have been times during the last 4 years when he didn't look like our 1 step ahead coach from the '80s. But, again, in December Coach's demeanor on the sidelines looked to me (for whatever that might be worth) like he was again the man who would out-coach whoever was across the field from him.

Anyway, here's to getting this mess settled and putting things right enough so that by next Thanksgiving this month will be all but forgotten.

* we were one of the hottest teams in the league

* our HOF coach had gone from being routinely ripped earlier in the year to being almost universally praised for bringing the team together in the face of the unspeakable loss of ST

The cause for these two effects was the remarkable play of Todd Collins and not something signalling a permanent upgrade in our situation.

* it looked like we had learned from our over-spending free-agent lust, as our recent additions looked like money well spent

* and we had a decent stack of draft picks at our disposal for the first time in a while, helping many of us feel 08 would be better than 07 (give or take our usual salary cap issues in the off-season).

These two factors are still in play.

Now, 3 short weeks later

* we were knocked out of the playoffs in a game we reasonably could have won

* our HOF coach has stepped down

* our 'heir apparent' appears to have little to no chance of getting the job

* Vinny C has been elevated to 'the man' on all things football related, but not really (Note: I haven't been a Dan Snyder-basher in the past, but I've got to admit that I'm developing a better appreciation for why others may be.)

Stuff happens. Long run, the above might someday be seen as lucky breaks. We can't be sure.

* we fans are being treated like mushrooms (I mean, come on--who you are/are not interviewing is not exactly a state secret. It's not like the rest of the league are going to fire their coaches to snap up the people we're talking to.)

* apparently, the players and the current coaching staff are also on mushroom duty

* it sounds like the rest of the league see our organization a joke in a way that has not been true since at least the 1960s.

The secrecy doesn't bother me. I just hope they get it right and so far I can't complain.

Who cares what others think of of our organization?

Since he has owned the team, Dan Snyder hasn't made the right move yet -- the one which puts us on the road to long-term success -- so the odds are against it, but who knows?
