A warning to the NFC East opponents

In the end its about the players. If Jason does well, we will field a good team. I think he will do well in the WCO. We have talent here. I think we will be ok. When Spurrier was here...we had absolutely no talent...his choice. The Florida guys sucked. When Norv was here...we were good when we had talent on offense. Our D never had talent until 2000, then it was washed up talent. Still, that talent took us to a #4 defense. The talent got hurt on offense and we were screwed. With Marty...the talent revolted. The QB talent was also questionable. With Joe...we had talent on D in 04...so they were great...same in 05. The talent was seriously lacking in 06 thanks to injuries and some bad pickups...I think we had a strong safety at every DB position. The O was running an archaic system and the talent at QB was bad in 04. An infusion of talent(Moss, Rabach...a healthy Brunnell, a healthy Jansen) the O improved. In 06, a bust(Lloyd) a green QB, and injuries to our best player as well as terrible playcalling killed us. This past year are young QB showed promise, and when healthy the talent won in spite of coaching(when they actually won). I think any coach with credentials near Fassel's could come in here and field a winner with this talent.

Holy Christ...I just reread this thing...I certainly said talent enough didnt I? Hopefully you get what was trying to say.

I know! And New England had to fight against everyone else to get Belicheck

Actually they did have to famously fight the Jets for him. And Belicheck was a hot coordinator still -- Fassel -- ah not.

Am sure the NFC east teams are quaking in their boots. Actually I don't mean this sarcastically but weren't the Eagles/Cowboys late 90s not very good -- could be wrong but that's what I recall off the top of my head.

8 of Fassel's wins against the Eagles came from 1997-2000. Once McNabb and Reid were entrenched and the Eagles assumed control of the conference, he was 1-5.

Does anyone remember how unbelievably bad the players on the 1997, 1998 and 1998 Eagles were? Even in 2000, when they made the playoffs as a wild card before losing to the Giants, Darnell Autry was their starting RB and Charles Johnson and Torrance Smalls were their starting receivers.

Thank you BillyKilmer.

A breath of fresh air.

Fassel certainly wasnt my first choice to be head coach either, but the doom and gloom that has spread over ES fandom is somewhat unwarranted. Gregg Williams helped us through a tragic and hopeful season and has been a loyal and driven coach for the last 4 years but his resume as a head coach is certainly not better than Fassel's.

Fact is, no one knows what was said behind closed doors when the interviews kicked off. If ownership decides that they are more comfortable with someone from outside the present organization, then we as fans need to be open to that and avoid projecting our selfish, negative reactions onto the start of a tremendously important transition period in Redskins history.

By all accounts this has been a meticulous interview process and I have hope that Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato carefully weighed their decision to favor advancing in the playoffs in the near future even if it seems otherwise right now.

All that said, the Redskins still didnt even come close to the man that I wanted leading them.

Yes the Gaints had the Vaunted Danny Kannel at QB no one could stand up to that talent

I like that most of us HATE this choice!!!! I was soooo mad when I heard the possibility, but once I see Fassel in Burgundy and Gold I'll love it. We are impatient fans. Every year we're going to the Super Bowl. Let's see how this works out. Danny isn't going for glamour.

So true. If Fassell is HC, it's not the big splash we are accustomed too.

Bobby Hoying/Doug Pederson?

We were one of the lowliest franchises in the NFL during that period. No bit of revisionist history will change that fact. I've got the pent up aggression and stress lines to show for it.

Just when our Skins started getting a bit of respect around the league Snyder pulls this crap outta his you know whatzizz. Teams have all the right to laugh and ridicule us. I know I would. This is an asinine, stupid decision and I pity the players.

I just cant see this man coaching in the NFL but because of recent history I can see us doing this. Mediocrity again will rule this team sad to say.

Fassel was by no means my first choice this time around but I do believe he was many Skins fans before Gibbs part II. This must be revisionist history at it's finest to think this organization was so great that we needed to keep it together as it was. Have all you guys been attending the same games I have? How many times have you cursed the name of Gibbs/Saunders/Williams the past 4 seasons? Where was the defensive guru, Williams, last year when we had the 31st ranked D??? I know this year has been the roller coaster ride from hell but everyone needs to take a deep breath. Yippee, we finished 9-7 and got beat by 3 TDs in the playoffs...LET'S NOT CHANGE A THING. I understand that the winning streak after all the turmoil we've been through made us feel good but it shouldn't change the fact that with the HIGHEST PAID COACHING STAFF EVER we sure lost a lot close games that we shouldn't have. So really, let's not act like we're replacing the irreplaceable.

The funny thing is that almost everybody on here is saying that Fassel will be bringing us back to mediocrity.

Unfortunately, the same mediocrity we fear is what we've been going through with Williams, Saunders, and I hate to say it - coach Joe. This past season, we road a wave of emotion because of Sean's passing. Otherwise, we were a team that was sinking fast in the NFC before that.

So we made the playoffs in the sad-sacked NFC two of the last three years....that doesn't say much because unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that in neither of those years we didn't scare anybody or posed a serious threat to winning the NFC.

Fassel means an adjustment period - an adjustment period we experienced all too often over the course of 12 years as we cycled through five coaches in Petibone, Turner, Schottenheimer, Robiskie, and Spurrier.

I think that this fear of starting over is as much a problem for most people as is the actual hire of Fassel.

Im at the opinion that Gibbs left this team in some decent shape with all the misfortune early on in the season. I can start over. Just would be best to start with it being in house. Or perhaps Cowher. Fassel was fired by the Ravens for being an inept coordinator. Giants had enough of him years ago. Why the hell our Skins? Never felt this way until now but Snyder is a damn fool to do this.

Jim Fassel has a better NFL coaching record than Greg Williams and has taken a team to the Super Bowl... This is the same way people were laughing at the Chargers when they fired a 14-2 coach and hired Norv Turner.

Keep laughing guys... all the way to routine playoff appearances and a possible Super Bowl trip. I would give anything to be in the playoffs every year. As great as JG is, most of you people forget that Joe Gibbs 2.0 had a sub .500 record and "ZERO" NFC East division championships.

Excellent post Billy. All of these posters with man crushes for GW's need to realize he never was anywhere as good as Fassel as a head coach. Fassel went to the playoffs and the Superbowl and won coach of the year twice. GW didn't even come close a little bit to any of that and had a horrible record as coach 17 wins in 4 years. As Defensive Cordinator GW was good one year and awful the next here. When we needed GW he never delivered, where were you GW in 2006? Why did you want Adam Archuletta GW? Where were you in Seattle GW? I like GW but he's not as good of a coach as Fassel. If we go this direction the franchise will be fine and all you chicken littles out there tonight will be fans again in time.

I agree. We will be fine. In fact, I bet Fassel will do a lot better than Gibbs II. Hiring GW as the HC really would have been the nightmare.
