Teller
American Indians= Indians, people indigenous to India.Native Americans= people native to the continents of North/South America Whether it is racist or not differs from which person you talk to. Some Native Americans I've met are Redskins fan and think that the name isn't racist, and the logo is dignified. Others clearly find it to be racist. I think before anyone talks about changing the team name, someone calls up the Cleveland Indians and tells them to change their logo, or calls up the Atlanta Braves and tells them to drop the tomahawk logo and fan involvment thing... Most applications (including federal, I think) have changed, Rock. Anyone born in the United States is a "Native American." Indiginous peoples are American Indians. If you want to get technical, see: African American. That would make the people you refer to as American Indians, Indian Americans. Damn it to hell, I hate political correctness. I don't care what color anyone's skin is, but I wish a lot of people had thicker skin.

Teller
Cool, I didnt see anything existing. By the looks of it I was just startin trouble. It wasnt meant to be that way. I am just agrivated with the overall direction this team seems to be heading. We're all apprehensive right now. It's the life of a Skins fan. I'm not sure how (albeit maybe inadvertently) throwing gasoline on that fire helps matters though. You know us. You're one of us, or at least you say so in your original post. (And I've got no reason to doubt you.) Redskin fans are some hardcore SOBs. We're some of the most loyal, dedicated, informed and passionate fans in the NFL. Any discussion about doing away with a nickname, logo, or fight song we hold so dear is only going to elicit hostility. And if anything, we need to be pulling together right now. Regardless of who the coach is. I know you didn't start this thread to be inflammatory. I just think we're all looking for reasons to vent our frustration right now, and you propped yourself up as an easy target, that's all.
Thiebear
If what we are hearing is true, our team will be recieving a complete overhaul. Not the continuety we were hoping for. Would this be the prime time for the organization to change the name? QUOTE]You have to have over 6000 posts to talk about the name of the skins. You have to have over 26000 posts and a position on the team to talk about a name change. Carry on.
pjfootballer
I agree that the American Indians might have a problem with the name Redskins. But if the biggest problem facing the American Indian community is the name of a team, which I doubt, then they have it pretty damn good. The same could be said for the blacks & the confederate flag. Besides from what I've seen & read/heard the Washington Redskins are by far the favorite team of the American Indian community. Hey I'm 1/4 Irish the name of Notre Dame sports teams offends me, the term Fighting Irish is derogatory & makes everyone think we like to get drunk & fight. :2cents: Well, I'm 1/2 Irish. My mom's maiden name is Harrigan and the Notre Dame name or logo doesn't bother me in the least. If you want to fight about it, let me finish my whiskey first.
Old Bay
http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-793002/Indians-give-a-cheer-for.html It's kind of old, but there's the onlything I could find on the net about a good majority of Native American Indians not finding the name offensive. I have read other articles (and I wish I had them at hand) that stated that most didn't find the name offensive. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/redskins/2006-08-11-redskins-indians_x.htm There's another article that's more recent about a group trying to get the name changed. I'm not sure who is in this group, whether they are American Indians or just PC white folks. Based upon the general census of what I've heard though, this lobbying group doesn't represent the majority. I have some American Indian ancestry, Apache and Cherokee...way on up the line, you definitely couldn't see it in me though. I'm definitely not a prime example, but I don't see it as offensive. To answer your question though. I'm not sure of any good names to replace Redskins. It has been established for 70+ years, and to suggest a name change is somewhat traumatic. I don't see any of the actions by the team as being disrespectful either.

isle-hawg
Sorry, you are correct, I should have said Native American Indians. And I cant stand the tomahawk chop. The term "Indians" is ill informed and could just as well be considered and insult since it was given by the white man that thought he was in India. The correct term for the people you mention is American aborigine. As for the name Redskins, most of us here love this team, and have respect for what the name represents (to us). If we were somehow mocking the American aborigine people, I would not defend it, but we are doing just the opposite in our hearts by honoring and respecting them. altair4
I'm for changing the name. Would you go for "the nashville ni**ers"? The Jacksonville Jews? How about "The washington whities" No? Then what makes "Redskins" OK? But then, I also think Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should all be tried for treason as well...
fwo40
Nobody thinks "Redskins" and thinks Indians. It's about the football team now and has been for years and years. This is why it wil and should continue to remain the team name.

I get Snyder is giving most of us here angst, but why compound it? Do you not get the tradition thing for those of us die hard fans? I am not Irish but will go out on a limb here and say most Irish people probably don't want to be considered fighting leprechauns. Where is the push to get rid of the name and logo for the Notre Dame team? As a white dude if the team name was already the "Whiteys" (or crackers or fill in the blank derogatory term) with a logo of strong warrior white guy profile. I would have 0 problem with that and would not still not want to change it.

headexplode
The mob has spoken. All dissenters will be escorted to the Reeducation Center. Questions that offend our sensibilities will not be tolerated. Those who question the prevailing wisdom will be visciously berated, and the measure of their fandom will be brought into doubt. We've read polls. We know what Native Americans think and feel. And, anyway, we don't really give a ****. We're not Native Americans. Political correctness (which some mistakenly believe to be a fancy term for civility) is eroding our rights to not have to learn a new name, and that is not acceptable. This has been discussed before and we're tired of hearing about it. We want to read more about Ron Paul and who the next head coach will be and wonder if Democrats R really for the black man and look at pictures of women in bikinis, not rationally discuss whether the team name is racist and whether or not a change should even be considered. We're right and you're wrong so S T F U. (This should be the second and last post of this thread.)
