JerseyBach
If what we are hearing is true, our team will be recieving a complete overhaul. Not the continuety we were hoping for. Would this be the prime time for the organization to change the name? We started as the Braves, in Boston. I dont know if that name is considered racist, but I am sure that a non descript name could be found. Since our owner is a buisnessman, perhaps he could sell the naming rights to the team. The Washington .comers. or something equally bland. Got any sugestions?

JerseyBach
get lost with this BS.BS? I dont think that the American Indians consider this BS. Abe Pollin changed the name of the Bullets to the wizards because he had friends gunned down, and thought the name had ties to violence. It is not something new to teams. Why did they change the words to HTTR? Did someone find a problem with the word Dixie? Maybe we could bring that word back, and fly a confederate flag while were at it. Maybe you are thinking, its only a word. Fine, I can think of a bunch sure to annoy certain segments of the population. But hey, they dont apply to me, so whats the big deal., its just a word. What does the term Redskin mean. Because by starting this thead it proves to me you have no idea. Look it up and get back to me. I dont need to look anything up, the name was changed by George Preston Marshall. Yes, THAT GPM, the last owner to hire an African American. BECAUSE HE WAS FORCED TO. That owner had no problem with descrimination, hey, it must have been a different time in America. Does the name Redskin apply to me? No. As far as I know I dont have any Indian blood in me. But if the name was the Washington Blackskins, I dont think I would be the only one with a problem.

nneece
You guys are all wrong. This is the perfect opportunity for Snyder to change the team name. Change the team's name and move it out to LA. Then we can have a new expansion franchise called the Washington Redskins setup shop in DC. Oh, and it won't be owned by a joke named Danny Snyder. DjTj
In honor of our new coach, we could be the Washington Fossils. Then we could rename the Stadium "Indian Burial Ground." Instead of a Ring of Fame, we could put little tombstones around the field. :point2sky Can we move this to the Stadium? The crazy threads go there. Predicto
Here we go again. JerseyBach, give it up. For some reason, nothing gets ES posters angrier than the suggestion that the team change its name. You will not get a reasoned discussion on this issue, I can promise you. DeaconBlue
Jersey if you do a search on this subject both here and in the stadium you will find that a significant number of individuals of native american descent have come forward during previous discussions and have stated that they neither find themselves offended by the name or in need of people like you to speak on thier behalf. Obviously you are correct, I will not get a reasoned discussion. I was asking for suggestions on a new name, and stated that since the team is gonna experience an overhaul maybe it was time for a name change. I did not say I was speaking on behalf of anyone but myself. Anyone know why the St John Red Men changed their name to Red Storm?

Since you are too lazy, and most likely clueless, to find info to support your claims I'll do it for you. The term "Redskin" refers to the color of pigment warriors put on their face before battle. It was taken from the mud in local river banks. It has nothing to do with a race of people. Marshall was a racist, I don't argue that. But that has nothing to do with this argument. If you started a thread that included Marshall being such I would not of disputed that. If it offends you that much, follow a different team! Because personally I'm offended that a fan of my team is as ignorant as you when it comes to the team name.

Yeah, I am too lazy to open a window and google the word Redskin. So instead I took down my copy of Funk and Wagnalls (thats a dictionary) and looked up the word. It says A North American Indian. That is all. It does not say it is derrogitory. I am sure if I looked it up on the internet there are plenty of arguments on both sides. BTW, I have been following YOUR team since 1971. And if I was clueless, I would be a Cowboy fan.

Sounds like a story made up after the fact as cover. And oh by the way, I did a search and the only thing that I came up w/ was this, which isn't very complimentary and says that's what the teams media guide says: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/16/AR2005091601640.html It is also interesting to see some ex-players take: "I understand the people who may have those complaints," said Ray Brown, the team's 42-year-old offensive lineman, who is black. "If I can assist them in any way, I would." In an authentic, modest act of sensitivity, Brown tries not to refer to the team name in conversation. "I don't tell people I play for the Redskins," he said. "I just tell them I play for the 'Skins. When I sign autograph items, I do the same thing. I put 'Skins. It's my thing. I'm not saying everyone else should do it, but that's what I do.""

Ghost of
Is there actually any evidence for that. Sounds like a story made up after the fact as cover. Well, I'm not going to do the legwork for you but yeah, there was a tribe in New England area that actually put reddish mud all over their bodies and their hair. Redskin was not initially a term of disparagement, just a name. I'm sure the Aboriginal Americans had various terms for whites that were just a name and became derogatory only after certain events or perceptions developed. Hell, there a lot of words and names like that. Just read "Made in America" for a wonderful history on American English. I can't say WHEN it may have become derogatory but i believe Roosevelt used the term and didn't intend on it being racially insensitive (unlike the difference between negro or colored and the n-word.)
