How do you define torture?

I think with all this talk of should or shouldn't we and this is/no it ain't... maybe we should take a step back and ask. What is torture? Are we talking only things that the Marquis de De Sade would try or get off on? Is torture a very generalized term like watching the Redskins blow a lead or being circumcized as an adult? Or listening to President Bush try to recite Shakespeare? Is it something much more specific? Is it undefineable?

This thread is not about whether we should or shouldn't or whether it's good or bad, but figuring out where we draw the line in defining what it is.

From a political perspective, I get annoyed when people try to reinvent the definition of a word. Fact is, the definition of torture is very broad.

1 a: anguish of body or mind : agony b: something that causes agony or pain2: the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure

Being a Redskins fan and watching Dallas do better than us every year!

This is a false statement.

This is a lie.

The Redskins have been better than Dallas quite a few times. We have the Superbowl Trophies and NFC Championship victories to prove it.

Shame on you. :hammer:

Torture Convention's definition of "torture": "any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity."
