Star Free agents vs Star draft pick

So, who's been more productive?

On the free agent side, let's put Sean Springs, Andre Carter, Santana Moss, and Clinton Portis (trade, but with the new contract effectively a free agent).

On the draft side, let's put Jason Campbell, Cooley, Sean Taylor, and Rogers.

What about Randy Thomas, Casey Rabach, Marcus Washington, LFB, and Mike Sellars? We've drafted some stars, and gotten some FA stars. So has every other team. You can't hit 100% with either one so you have to try both.

:applause:

The thing is, you can have both. We should keep signing FAs, but hopefully not make another Lloyd/Archuleta type of mistake, while holding our draft picks and making better use of them.

The problem with our team hasn't, despite the conventional wisdom, been that we sign too many FAs. It's been that we trade away too many draft pciks. And trade them away for the wrong players.

I do wonder if the ammount of "fight" is different though. Are the homegrown pushing harder? I think about all the U players who said, "Meh, we don't need to be here for the offseason." Or "I am too important to ever be played during a preseason game"

There really aren't many star free agents anymore.

Teams have figured out it is often cheaper and more effective to keep the players you have and pay them accordingly.

You have players like Nate Clements out there that get a $60 million contract, but is he really one of the top corners in the NFL? a must-have player for a contender?

You don't see guys like Reggie White sitting out there available come March 1 anymore.
