Calling timeout on game winners

ST is my boy

What if there are 12 men on the field for the defense and the coach comes running up to the ref to call timeout just before the ball is snapped? You have to be able to call timeouts at any point before the ball is snapped. Also, it's not necessarily just happening now because the coaches can call timeouts. This happened several years ago when 3 of the defenders called timeout just before the ball was snapped on a field goal. I think it was the Broncos that time too, but I'm not certain which team it was.

I do have a fear of our kicker making the first & missing the second in a situation like this, but I also fear our coaching staff deciding to do that & the other team missing the first & making the second. Thus the need to just keep putting points on the board so it doesn't come down to a kick.

1) Can't stop a timeout from being called, thats insane. What if a defender notices that the offense is going to fake the field goal? You going to say they should have got the right d in the first time? Play hasn't started and you can't disallow timeouts.

2) even if they do stop the coaches from doing it, now that it's started the teams will just have a player on the field do it. It's here to stay.

Those who are against it surely have to see that there is strategy involved in it. Those who are for it surely have to see that there is some shadyness involved. I'm really not sure what should be done about this situation. But I definitely wouldn't put it past the league to figure something out if they really wanted to do something. It could be something like, if they make it the first time and miss it the second time, they get another chance.

So, basically, you feel that defenses should not be allowed to call a timeout past a certain point on the play clock? Because that's what it amounts to - preventing the defense from calling a timeout.

As others said, the way to prevent this is to take the ability to call a timeout away from the coaches.

As an aside, I used to always refer to timeouts as TOs. Now, I never use that term - I wonder why :).

I'm not a big fan of it but there isn't a lot to be done about it. I can't see the NFL making a rule limiting how close to the snap a time out can be used. However it really shouldn't be that big of a deal. At this point in time kickers should KNOW they are going to be iced at the end of the game. Use that first kick as practice.

This is what I think. You can't stop this because then what happens when you think there's going to be a fake? The rule should stay the same. At the best it is a gamble and it gives you more incentive to save time outs.

Statistically, it doesn't work and just pisses everyone off in these long games. Just let the guy kick so everyone can go home. On one occassion, it gave a certain team time to regroup, go for the TD, and take the lead at the half, a lead they never looked back from I might add. ;)

I don't see the problem with it. If anything, it gave me an extra minute of hope last night before it all came crashing down. Only the freakin' Cowboys could turn the ball over six times in a game and still win. That is a rule I think we should change.

Alot of good points being made for both sides. I guess its something were going to have to get used to for a while. Because im pretty sure its gonna happen every single week now. Like someone said I guess it will just take someone to miss first then make second for it too stop...

I hate having them call timeout on the millisecond before the snap. One of these days somebody is going to call a timeout as the ball is snapped and the kick is good and there's going to be a controversy about whether the timeout was done in time. (Even though the coach waited until the very last second to call it)

Worst nightmare: This leads to replays on when a timeout was called.

Billick waited too long to throw a challange flag a couple of weeks ago, and the officials had no problem telling him that he was too late.

For some reason people seem to think they called a time out in mid-snap.

The debate should be if it is an effective strategy, not if it should be allowed.
