Final Cut List/Extreme Coverage Gibbs' Presser 9/01/07

If he had posted here with more regularity instead of just promoting his car show, perhaps he would have been kept ;)

In all seriousness, not too happy to see Wynn let go. We are stretched quite thin on the defensive line now without Salave'a and Wynn, and what happens when one of Griffin/Daniels/Carter inevitably goes down? Renaldo was a great character guy, a staple in the locker room, and I believe he was the players' rep on the team. Expect to see another article by Howard Bryant about how we're making a mistake by letting the "good guys" go.

I really liked Wynn and am sad to see him go--a class act and a very solid influence on the Redskins over the past 5 seasons. However, there is an old saying in the NFL that it's better to let go of an older player a year early than to hold onto him a year to long (or something like that) and I think we're seeing the Redskins FO/Coaching staff really realize that this year--if we are going to be good long term we need depth that is internally developed, and you don't get that if you don't sometimes cut ties with popular veteran players. While this may not actually help us all that much this year, the coaches obviously felt like losing Marshall, Wynn, and Salvea wouldn't hurt the D, and next year we may be extremely glad we gave a shot to someone like Chris Wilson, Alex Buzbee or HB Blades. Not to say they will all pan out, but you don't get young players on your team if you keep too many over the hill veterans around, and obviously the guys that do end up making the team the coaching staff felt showed enough promise to keep around, so props to the staff for taking the long-term, potentially unpopular view.

Finally, I also think this shows once and for all that the coaches and FO are really in control and all the talk about Danny meddling is overblown media BS by people that don't like him, as I doubt Danny would drop a fan favorite for a undrafted, unheralded rookie if he were making the calls--these are the kind of decisions being made when FOOTBALL people are in control making decisions, and while it's sad for fans it is in the long term best interests of the skins, so I'm actually quite positive about these developments (doesn't hurt that they signed Cooley).

All of that said--where is the final roster--it was due at 4 right? I want to read about OUR team!!!

Unfortunately, we didn't recieve your payment this month Lloyd. When we get your $19.95, you'll get your cuts :)

It's all about money with you guys. Why don't you ever travel with the team at your own expense? Why don't you ever sacrifice time with your families to get us some good camp photos? Why is it always about you?

I'm ready for it to be about me for a change. And my beer's getting warm. Let's have another, there barkeep. Chop. Chop.

;)

Wynn cut bothers me. I liked that he could play anywhere on the line. I liked him as a reserve and i have yet to see golston or monty prove anything in the league yet.

Only 1 year left on his deal, a full camp, would have liked to see us let him finish it out.

I dont know if we have enough guys at end especially with Daniels who breaks down alot and washington hurt.

If we can cut Doug Williams shortly (relatively speaking) after the greatest quarter in Super Bowl history, we can cut Renaldo Wynn.

perhaps they are looking to pick up another D lineman from waivers??

Yeah that's my thought too -- its interesting that they waited until the end with him as opposed to Lemar and Joe where they gave them some time out of courtesy.

I don't think Wilson or Buzbee tore it up in the last preseason game and that changed their minds (I could be wrong on this, of course) so perhaps they got word a DE they are interested in will be available or is.

wynn was never a stud, just a gap filler- did he ever have more than 4 sacks and maybe 40 tackles... I think the D will be just fine without him! The strength of the d is def in the LB and secondary corps- if we can get run stoppers we'll prob have LL as our top sacker this year, much as SS was 2 yrs ago

It doesn't make much sense, tho. Why cut him now when you don't know who is available, rather than waiting to see if someone does come available?

I have to think that someone in addition to Wilson made the team.

Wilson provided good pressure from the outside when I saw him on the field. He is a bit undersized at 245 but Williams no doubt feels he can spot Chris to get the most out of his athleticism and protect him from having to face the road graders heading downhill on the early downs.

Wilson is only 24 and has a decent upside as a specialist.

The fact that Daniels and Evans are solid at the point of attack at DE against the run gives me more confidence they can platoon Wilson effectively.

you are assuming that they dont know who is getting cut- maybe they have someone in mind/ an idea from another team??

Whatever the deadline is, its the deadline to make the cuts, not share them with the fans

Trust me guys, JimmiJo is sitting at Redskins Park. The second the cuts are released, you'll have them.

I'm imagining JimmiJo in the ventilation ducts above Gibbs' office ala Kramer (Michael Richards) in Airheads. Am I close? :)
