Is this almost depressing to watch?

He was asked to put on some weight to fit Gibbs mold of running attack. This was a mistake since Portis is a cut and slash type of runningback.

However he was effective in 04 and very effective in 05 it didn't seem natural when he runs.

I hope Saunder notice this and get him back to Denver form. I heard he dropped some weight this offseason.

Clinton Portis in Denver when he ran a 4.2 40....

run 1 - http://youtube.com/watch?v=XBvSfY-gaF4

run 2 - http://youtube.com/watch?v=C5i_2LIsWUs

Gibbs botched Portis. He should have used his skills, rather than asking him to try and become something he isn't (Bettis-Riggins type back). It is things like this that make people speculate the game has passed him by.

I don't see a difference in his speed. He's still fast as lightning. Look at the Jax game when he ran to block and spring Santana. Look at his run around the edge against Dallas. The difference this year is that he'll be fresh for the first three games (essentially his preseason), have a bye week, and then can be healthy for the remaining 13 games. I watched that video and laughed b/c I can't tell a difference between him then and now. Just b/c the hole was bigger doesn't mean he's changed. Maybe our O-line will help him get those explosive runs. Tell the fat guys in front to stay slim this season and help block the second level and we'll see if Portis can break a few.

Yes he does have the same explosiveness and straight ahead speed. However, his stop and go and cutting speed aren't the same. This is where the extra bulk effected him. There are some D-lineman that can run a 4.7 40yard dash but if you ask them to cut that is a different thing.

This is why I don't like to judge a college prospect on the 40 timing. I perfect to see the other drills.

Wow, he looks great against that vaunted KC defense from a few seasons. I might have cracked 100 against those guys. In fact, the most of the defenses in that division were putrid back then.

Not that it's the sole reason he had such a great couple of years back then, but it didn't hurt

On that same link, just watch the 4:08 video of all his REDSKIN higlights, which doesnt include his big hitter first carry, or the big shovel pass against the texans...him healthy in 2005 and even look at how good he was with a bum shoulder last year in some of the clips....if healthy and breaks for Betts....Portis should have a great year....not to mention no 8 or 9 in the box with the threat of Campbell going over the top....HTTR!!!

He had to change. He dropped a bit of his speed for his power. If he didn't, he'd be getting those 50+ yard runs once a year behind our line. Instead, now he's a first down machine.

Unfortunetely, I've come to learn that offensive lines either create big play threats who aren't valuable as much in tough yardage situations, or yard-eating backs to won't have too many 20+ yard plays. The former is more exciting, but the latter is the one that wins championships. We seem to be building towards the type that builds championships.

This talk of Portis not playing in the preseason, the same guys last year were complaining when he did play and got injured. Lets wait till the season starts before we start accusing players. How can someone make a judgement call like this is just insane!

I pray that Portis stays healthy and kicks it into high gear this year and for that matter many more but when you have a RB who is injured you can't expect him to perform to his fullest potential without rest. The guy is a beast and built like a brick house. You dont think he's in shape to play his position? Dont be rediculous! The guy is in the gym busting his ass, working with trainers on on and off field, focusing on technique, watching film but you still think that since he hasn't been getting hit he won't perform? That is just plain ol rediculous!

If it's Portis making these excuses for not playing then so be it. Once he gets on the field we'll see what he can do.

Hey, why not go check the Redskins record books and tell me who holds the mark for rushing yards in a season, and carries in a season.

Oh forget it. I'll save you the time.

It's Clinton Portis.

Some of you guys should really try watching some of these games sometimes. They're fun!

With the same number of carries as Portis had in 2005, Betts would have demolished that record in 2006. Betts is obviously the better runner :D( I tease, but seriously... your stat doesn't prove much except that the Skins ran Clinton a lot in '05).

I love the Skins, but Gibbs' tenure as of now if far from successful, by almost any objective reckoning. I am glad things are looking up, and this season could certainly change that assessment, but in aggregate, his tenure has been a failure, and no single season rushing stat can change that.

And to be honest, I think the fact that Clinton is perpetually banged up may be tied to that carries stat.

Clinton will continue to have sore shoulders and knee problems, as long as he is asked to try and be what he isn't--a bruising, grinding back.

Gibbs came back into the league, acquired a back, and plugged him into the Riggins role, without adequate consideration to whether that was an ideal fit for his skillset. He made one of the classic mistakes of poor coaches--forcing square players in circular holes that the system demands.

He appears to be learning and evolving on this point. . . finally. . .

The Gibbs system and blocking scheme does not work with a slashing type of runner. We grind it out and win games by wearing down the other defense. If Portis were as light as he were in Denver, he would be injured every single year and be out of the NFL by now. It speaks volumes for Portis's talent that he was once a light, slashing runner and changed his style to a tough, pounding runner with essentially no drop off in production.

The Gibbs system you describe was all but abandoned midway through 2004. We didn't have the dominant O line to make it work.

Joe adapted by adding some of Denver's zone blocking to our scheme to suit Portis. What we have now is sort of a mix that includes some Al Saunders too.

He will be a top-five back this year. He will easily get 1500, and he will probably get closer to 2000. I'm not being bold, I'm being realistic. Anyone who says different just doesn't know Clinton Portis when there's a passing game going on. And don't look now, but we've got a passing game going on now.

If healthy, Clinton will run at a higher yards per carry average than ever before as a Redskin, but I don't look for as many carries as in the past. The thing is, that Betts might not be his equal as a runner, but the passing game is better with Ladell in the pattern.

I think the Skins will miss a good bet if they don't have both in the game at the same time on occasion -- with Betts in the slot -- doing part-time duty as our third receiver.
