Be interesting to see how this plays out.

CRAIG ARRESTED, PLEADS GUILTY FOLLOWING INCIDENT IN AIRPORT RESTROOM Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a “he said/he said misunderstanding,” and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, “What do you think about that?” the report states.

....Craig stated “that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine,” the report states. Craig also told the arresting officer that he reached down with his right hand to pick up a piece of paper that was on the floor.

“It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper,” the arresting officer said in the report.

According to Wikapedia:

On 17 October 2006, gay activist Mike Rogers wrote on his blog, "I have done extensive research into this case, including trips to the Pacific Northwest to meet with men who have say they have physical relations with the Senator. I have also met with a man here in Washington, D.C., who says the same -- and that these incidents occurred in the bathrooms of Union Station. None of these men know each other, or knew that I was talking to others. They all reported similar personal characteristics about the Senator, which lead me to believe, beyond any doubt, that their stories are valid

2nd Edit: Wikapedia is was edited and they took down a lot. You can't find what I just posted anymore.

It is unfortunate that, like so many others in this country, Craig couldn't just be himself, and had to resort to this kind of sad, anonymous encounter to fulfill his urges. Given the Idaho voters, there is no way he could have come out of the closet and kept his career.

Frankly, this will only bother me if Craig was one of those guys who ranted against gays all the time and harped about family values. I hate hypocrites. However, I don't know a darn thing about Craig, so I have no idea if he is one.

Sad story all around.

Here's a guy who ought to be removed from office, have his Republican Party affiliation stripped and be told that the party would prefer he doesn't vote for Republican candidates in the future.

If they did that to every closet homosexual there would be no Republican party.

He has a list of goals to accomplish on his web site. This one is number 3 on his list.

goal three:

Defend and strengthen the traditional values of the American family

Maybe he could move to SF and run from office from there. He'd win in a landslide

Obviously he sees the need for that from personal experience.

I learned something new...Who knew? :silly:

At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot...

Well, every Republican says that - I think it is in the bylaws or something. Just like Democrats always say that they support "diversity."

The question for me is more whether Craig was an active gay-basher type, or just a basic conservative from a conservative state. Idaho is really really conservative. One of my best friends ran for Congress from Idaho twice as a Democrat. He lost both times to the utterly insane Republican incumbent Helen Chenoweth, who should not have been allowed to handle sharp objects, much less serve in the House of Representatives.

If that is true, then I would suggest the Republican party doesn't deserve to exist as it is.

It's full of the most hypocritical and self righteous people on the planet.

Democrats certainly have their share of hypocrites but not nearly as many of the incessent moral brow beating Republican types.

Perhaps you know more about her personally but what I read of her in a quick search revealed someone with no fewer issues than a lot (most?) of politicians who embrace certain ideals and are guilty of a little personal hypocrisy. She also stepped down and abided by her promise to keep to her own term limits if that could not successfully be voted in. Maybe anyone who isn't a 'moderate' (read: spineless) Republican is utterly insane (to you.)

I've heard "controversial" applied to her but not insane. Again, maybe you know more about her personally since your friend was a candidate but I kind of wonder.

As for this guy, this would exist even if the whole of society accepted homosexuals with open arms. And you know why? Because there are people who slowly drift into a certain type of conduct without even meaning to start or without being fully engaged and kind of descend into madness, just as with any kind of sexual kink or personal quirk (like believing in conspiracies, falling into anti-Semitic paranoia, an onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder, getting into a cult or bizarre 'self-help' movement, etc) And while some of those activities or beliefs may or not lead to people in bathrooms 'communicating' with each other, typically there is some attempt to hide these things (initially.)

And even if he were unmarried and without kids, picking up dudes in an airport restroom (having been a 'victim' of some creep trying to pick me up in a mall bathroom, it's not a 'closeted' behavior, it's just a perv behavior, these same guys could go to bars and clubs and do whatever it is they wanted to do with other men) would typically bring dishonor on his office.

Realize from the start that I am neither an Republican nor a Democrat....

It's full of the most hypocritical and self righteous people on the planet.

I would agree with that to a certain degree. Mostly because they understand that their true constituents will not support them if they realize what the candidates truly stand for. The Republican party has allowed itself to become Democrat-Lite and they're eventually going to have to pay for that serious mistake.

Democrats certainly have their share of hypocrites but not nearly as many of the incessent moral brow beating Republican types.

That's only because most Democrats are more than willing to admit they hold more in common with Josef Stalin than George Washington. They don't hold a better philosophy, they just don't try to hide their true beliefs like most Republicans do.

Right...Because the whole "Hey -We should start our OWN country, fight a war against the strongest military in the world, start form scratch, from a government that has never been done before, limit the powers of the head of state" is by far the definition of "Conservative"

Well, Edmund Burke was the most outspoken supporter of the colonies and he's pretty much the poster boy for "Burkean conservative." Not that there are many of those left, anymore. *sigh*

I'm starting to think that every politician who preaches family values has some crazy stuff going on in their own personal life.

You could even cut out the 'family values' part and you'd probably be accurate. I don't trust the vast majority of them at all and I bet a fair number started out OK but, being exceedingly weak, became corrupted over time by the power.

BTW, beware of anyone who would think of acquiring a share of the power of the State is a career path. It doesn't mean there aren't sincere public servants but I would never start with 'trust' as my default position. Which is why it's funny that there are those who always seek to surrender more of their own and their fellows' rights and wealth to the discretion of the political class.
