Mason or Blaylock

Mason has had limited time to show what he can do. But probably has the highest rushing average of all our running backs to play this preseason. I have seen absolutely nothing from blaylock. Just because he knows the playbook or is familiar with it. Should not be the reason he makes this team. He has shown me absolutely nothing. If we dont keep Mason I will be terrible upset?

Who do you think is the better running back so far? Blaylock or Mason?

Who's better picking up the blitz? I'd think its Blaylock since he has more experience in this system, but I can't gurantee it. I have seen Mason have better vision, and maybe he could get more as a third down back, but with the assumption that our line will be productive, just about any back we put back there will be ok and so I'd like somebody who could pick up the blitz on third down.

Mason is our third down back?

Portis on first

Betts on second

Mason on third?

I don't think Mason is going to make it. Practice Squad at best. The rain out hurt him. A guy like him needs reps. Hopefully he will do well Thursday.

I do agree he's a talented runner and really just needs to be given a chance. Reminds me a little of a Wesbrook from Philly type of runner.

Purely as a runner, it seems like Mason has outplayed Blaylock as a whole this preseason. He seems to have impressed the coaches during camp too. Blaylock has years of experience in this offense, yet Mason (someone with almost no experience) has outplayed him. Maybe it's the variation in the talent level they've each faced clouding my judgement, but right now I'd give the edge to Mason. I reserve the right to change my mind after Thursday :)

Enough with trying to start the bandwagon on Mason.

Yes, he runs well, but he hasnt ran against a 1st team or 2nd team D. Whats with people that want to jump on guys like this(Bramlet, Lumsden), do you do it just in case the guy blows up you can say, I said I liked him first you can check my thread on 8/27/07 at 9:45am.

Im just tired of reading these ridiculous posts about guys that have no shot in hell of making the team. I like pulling for the underdog, but lets be realistic with our postings, junk like this makes this board a joke to check.

I'm not convinced either one will make the roster, though if one does, I'm leaning towards Blaylock. He's been injured for some of his career I know, but I doubt he'd be anything than relief at this time so that may not be a big risk. Experience in the offense helps. Mason, for whatever upside he has shown, is still a bit of an unknown. Nothing wrong with developing the young talent, but the question becomes does the team occupy a roster spot for that when it could be used somewhere else a little more needed. Figure he may end up on the practice squad imho.

When I think about these two guys, I think about our situation last year and while we have Betts as the backup and Rock behind him, if we have injury problems at rb this year, do I trust either of them to come in and play? If Portis or Betts were to go down then I think I'd trust Blaylock more than Mason even though Mason seems to have more of an upside than Blaylock just because of Blaylock's experience. The worse case scenario I'd want to see is Jason Campbell back there getting blitzed and neither of his RBs know how to pick up a blitz. We know that Betts can't pickup the blitz, I just hope that Blaylock can. And I'm hoping that with his experience he'd be able to.

i'm a huge mason fan for many reasons, so i'm going to try to put my personal bias aside and address this objectively.

first of all, blaylock has not shown anything special at all this preseason. mason has shown a few signs of vision and explosion. i have also seen mason step up and make two huge blitz pick ups.

second of all, blaylock is a journeyman. a journeyman is essential a guy with talent but is not and will not ever be anything special. he's a guy that can play at the level and that's about it.

third of all, mason is younger and cheaper.

fourth and finally, no matter which player makes it, their role would be as a fourth stringer and would be lucky to see 1 touch per game. if either of them is going to touch the ball more than that this year, then that means that we will have underwent numerous injuries and our season will really be over. what is the purpose in keeping a journeyman who you know isn't going to be a stud when you can keep a young guy with explosion and potential for a lot cheaper?

So don't check and even worse don't reply.

Watch the film on Mason. If he can translate that skill when playing against better opposition he is a keeper and will supplant Betts (you can only beat what's put up against you, raise that against you standard and you have to give the kid time to adjust).

There ya go I said it...

Blaylock seems to always be about a half-step too slow out of the gate, as he's always getting caught from behind. He simply has not been impressive in the least, of course, neither has Rock on the few carries he's had, although we all know the line has not been in sinc thus far. Mason has looked impressive, however. It doesn't seem to matter if the line provides a hole for him to run through. He has a knack of finding his own way and creating his own space when there's nothing there at all. He runs hard and keeps his feet moving until he's down. He'a an excellent reciever out of the backfield as well! And he fights for every inch!

I love his shiftiness and I'd love to see what he can do returning kickoffs. Bottom line, he's a keeper in my book!!!
