John Clayton (ESPN) takes a shot at Portis

I have a HUGE amount of respect for John Clayton. He is easily the best NFL Analyst out there, and the only one who never ever shows bias. He'll give a team its dues when it deserves it, and he trashes them when they deserve it.

That said, if Portis remains fast, strong, and a touchdown/first down machine, then he can shop at McDonald's every day. If he still plays well, then I don't mind that, considering it is his body, and if it doesn't downtrod on his play, then he's fine.

I think Portis is a lazy azz when it comes to preseason or training camp... In my opinion he is so afraid of injury or getting nicked that he practically doesn't participate in full contact drills, much less the preseason games which leads to his "partial" belly. In all honesty I think if I were the coach, Betts would be the Day 1 starter till Portis showed me he really cared about practicing and being out there with his team. Not that I hate the guy, I just wish he had a better work ethic. :2cents:

It was a Fantasy Football question.. So you have to look at it from a comparrison perspective. In Fantasy, you're always comparing the top players in the NFL.So compare Portis and LT.. umm right now thre is no comparrison. Portis and Steven Jackson, umm... no comparrison. Portis and LJ umm.. well you get the point.

From your comments, it seemed as if Clayton was trying to say that Clinton is not in as good shape as previous years, and I can't disagree with him on that one... I mean if you look at him from his Denver days and even his first year here, he's noticably bigger. Bulk?..maybe, I guess we'll see when he rips off a long run or pass and see if he's gassed... The reason Jackson, LT and Johnson are ultimate weapons in Fantasy is because they basically never leave the field. If Portis wants this type of respect he has to put in the work in the offseason to get there during the regular season. Even Byner said Portis last year has to get his conditioning back up to speed considereing the injuries he suffered.I hope he does because Portis has the ability to be the #1 RB in this league.

I've heard Chad Johnson say in an interview with stephen a. smith on espn that he loves mcdonalds and cant stop eating it... he looks fine to me but as pro athletes that get paid millions of dollars, they're supposed to watch their eating habits much like pro models do because it affects their profession

chad is a funny guy, I saw a special on him, his diet consists of hotcakes and hashbrowns in the morning before games and all during training camp.

"If the furnace is hot enough anything will burn, even big macs."

Of course that depends on how intensly Portis is working out. CJ is playing preseason and going through camp so he burns off all the calories consumed. It is not so clear that Portis is doing the same.

John Claton is usually on point. In this case, I believe it to be no different. Portis seems lazy. He is admittedly dodging preseason like he's Ladanian or something. Why would Clayton lie about Portis' eating habits? I would disagree if I had seen Portis on the field more than a few hours ALL SUMMER LONG.

Some of you guys are absolutely ridiculous you know. The guy is one year removed from setting a franchise record in rushing yards which arguably had he not had TWO (2) freak injuries he may just have beat again last year. All of the sudden you throw him under the bus because he "supposedly" eats alot of McDonalds food? I've got a question for you skindogger47, you ask why would Clayton lie about Portis' eating habits? How in the hell would Clayton know what Clinton was eating all the time? Becasue him and 26 are such good buddies right?

You say Chad Johnson has the body type to do whatever he wants? Are you some sort of nutrition or human anatomy guru? Last i checked in workout photos Clinton looks as cut as he's always been.

Fact is, if Clinton plays the whole year - which he's done for the majority of his career he will have numbers to shut everybody up, including some of our own pessimistic fans.

This truly is a what have you done for me lately league, it shows everyday especially with completely idiotic, stupid and uninsightful comments like Clayton's McDonalds story.

Good point and if everyone remembers he did purposely bulk up for this offense last offseason.

In Portis' defense, it is well known that he changed both his body type and his running style when he came to DC for Joe Gibbs. He has said it time and time again. Even look at the 1:1 posted here he says "look how small I was!"

So yeah, hes gotten bigger every year hes been here. This is no different.

In Claytons defense, Portis has done nothing to make anyone think otherwise than what he has reported. Lets just hope CP shuts them all up on the field.

"Little chocolate doughnuts have been on my training table for years." (props to anybody who gets that reference)

Clayton is usually spot on with his comments and I love his battles with Salisbury Steak but in this case I hope he is off the mark. I guess we will know Sept. 9.

When Belushi crosses that finish line I fall out of my chair every time!!hen:eaglesuck

With that being said, I wonder because we are asking him to be more of a power runner that handles the ball quite a bit that he's breaking down prematurely. It's like making a Lamborghini into an off-road vehicle, so to speak. I don't think he played like that in college or in Denver so we're asking him to be something that he wasn't built to do.

Redskins' training-camp reports

July 30, 2007

Reasons for optimism: Offensively, there are few questions. There is great talent at running back, where Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts have delivered tremendous production, and the line is a top-shelf group, even with the loss of OG Derrick Dockery. The defense was a top-10 unit as recently as ’05, and though things fell off so far last season, a few simple adjustments and more production from the defensive line could lead to more forced turnovers. Last season the team caused a mere 12 — the lowest total in NFL history over a 16-game regular season.

Cause for concern: The D-line received no real reinforcements in the offseason, which it badly needed. Though Andre Carter responded late in the season after a tough beginning and Kedric Golston emerged as a legitimate starter, there are enough health questions with Phillip Daniels, Cornelius Griffin and Renaldo Wynn to cast serious doubt about improvement. As a group, the line collected only 13 sacks, and that must get better.

Battle to watch: The biggest hole is at left guard, Dockery’s old spot, and it could be filled by one of the team’s biggest players, 6-foot-8 Todd Wade. The biggest challenge will be for him to prove that he can get out and move on pulls and show the required knee-bend to play the position. Wade always had played in space as a tackle, and the footwork is a lot different inside. Right now, you’d have to say the battle will be Wade vs. the field, which consists of Mike Pucillo, Will Whitticker, Taylor Whitley and Tucker.

Don’t be surprised if … Landry starts as a rookie. Normally, that would not be shocking, especially as the No. 6 pick in the draft, but this defensive staff has refused to insert other high-profile rookies — Sean Taylor, Carlos Rogers and Rocky McIntosh — right away. That said, the coaches appear smitten with Landry and plan to use him as a box safety with *Taylor playing deep. They love the fact that Landry hasn’t made the same mistake twice and has learned to not always go for the knockout kill every time he tackles.

John Clayton has the body of a 10-year old... if you want to see it, he keeps it in the trunk of his car ...ba-dump bump (sorry couldn't resist)

Cheers!

last year portis lost some weight because Al Saunders wanted him lighter and quick on his feet. What did that get him? You all Know what happend.

In 2005 Portis had put on some Weight and he broke The redskins Single season rushing Record and we went to the Playoffs.

Portis looks bigger this year and I dont think it because of Mc Donalds. Portis said at the end of the season that the team should work out on there own because they (as players) knew there body and how to train it. Portis put on more weight because he likes to run between the tackles. He has said this on alot of interviews. The playrs have said that also. So thats why he looks bigger.

By the way. I'm a gym rat and I eat fast food sometimes. Hey you have to treat yourself every now and then. Just dont eat it all the time.

Why do we continually bash our players?? Brunell ok..but CP..Get a grip. If you made millions would you want to get hurt in preseason when it happened just last year?? Do you think he doesn't want to play football. Do you think he has so much clout he practices when he wants? these games dont matter and when the season comes everyone will eat crow. He has the potential to be a 2,000 yard back when healthy for 16 games. I dont know what year it was it it was 2005 or the year before. When he got hurt and didn't play a couple games and set out a like a half in one. He could have came close to 2,000 that year..Does anyone recall that? Might have been the year we went to the play-offs.. :2cents:
