Art
So, I'm watching NFL Network and the idiot head official is on. They're talking about the new "spike" rule where a player can be called for a delay of game penalty if they throw the ball away or spike it on the field of play when a play is dead. Apparently against the Steelers with Rocky jarred the ball loose and Taylor came in to pick it up, as the whistle blew, Taylor threw it away and he said that should be a penalty. Now, I'm not totally sure, but, I THINK the ball landed in the refs hands. I'll see if I can find that on the game tape. In any case, dumb rule . Lombardi's_kid_brother
This penalty happened in one of the games last week inside the ten yard line. I wish I could remember which one. Anyway, it went from 1st and Goal at the 4 to 1st and Goal at the 9. To be honest, I kind of wish Parcells was still alive to see one of his players get this penalty in the red zone. The comedic results would be stellar.
dizzinator53
we might as well put skirts on these guys. The No Fun League is a marketing giant and we can't do dick about it.
onedrop
depending on the ref (triplett) throwing the ball to the ref IS throwing it away.

RedskinDan0557
At the time I thought he was going to get flagged, but assumed he threw it to a ref because he didn't. The ball went off screen when he threw it. edited for grammar
zoony
Pretty soon they will ban running in between plays. Players will only be allowed to WALK, not run, off the field and to the huddle. Seriously, the NFL competition committee needs to back off. Big time.

EDIT: They didn't show where the ball ended up, but he bounced it back upfield instead of out of the EZ. Maybe it was toward a ref.
Lombardi's_kid_brother
Sure, first you let 'em spike the ball. Next you thing you know, they are having dog fights on the sidelines. My dad's a principal. His rule is that he never bans specific things. Whatever you ban, kids find an alternative. You ban hats. They wear sunglasses to class. You ban those, they put temporary tattoos on their faces. So, his rule is, if I find it distracting, it's banned. The NFL is like the elementary school principal trying to stay ahead of the kids. Don't use the throat-slash. Okay, I'll take my helmet off. Don't take your helmet off. Okay, I will spike the ball. Don't spike the ball. Okay, I will gesture for a first down. HEavyJumbo85
by far one of the dumbest rules ever invented...the competition committee is taking things way too far. This rule won't speed up games at all, it will only penalize players for natural reactions. it's just rediculous.
RedskinDan0557
I think what they are trying to do is speed up the game alittle. My only problem with this is if they just want more time for commercials. on edit: I take that back, I'd rather watch 2 refs scurring for a spiked football than American Idol anyday. Taylor 36
When did Bill Parcells die???I think he was confused. He took the nickname "Tuna" and thought Parcells was swimming with the fishes.
Lombardi's_kid_brother
When did Bill Parcells die??? I've made that joke 100 times and this is the first time I got that reaction. I am giddy right now. Parcells is fine. He's on his way to Saratoga right now. He's got an inside line on a gelding in the 4th. (I just find old coaches funny). herrmag
I wasn't aware that this was a new rule. I thought this rule had been in place for a long, long time, just wasn't being called with frequency.
SoCalSkins
When did Bill Parcells die??? When Gibbs pulled out Parcells' beating heart from his chest and stomped on it after the last pukes game at Fedex.
panel
You are completely right, this rule is dumb, it has gone beyond "protecting the shield", and into enforcing culture and etiquette. Goodell wants to force every NFL player to act like a Yale graduate, which some of you may think is fine, but I would hate to be in a situation where individuality is fround upon, and I know that I hate watching that too. RonArtest15
Jerricho Cotchery got flagged for doing this a week or so ago...it wasn't anything bad either. He was upset that he caught the ball and ended up a yard shy of the endzone. While on his knees, he BARELY spiked the ball, and he got the 15 yard unsportsmanlike call against him
Geoff_K
It appears to be a dumb rule. A spike does not seem to cause a problem to me. Now if the guy chucked it downfield and it took a minute or two for them to get the ball and restart play, then yes that should probably be flagged. I guess they did not want to say "if the spiked ball travels in excess of X yards it is a penalty".
Darc Requiem
Wow just wow. If the NFL continues down this path, they will actually open themselves up to a start up league. I understand wanting to ensure good sportsmanship, I don't understand them trying to micromanage player emotions.
