Slacky McSlackAss
Now i consider myself to be pretty savvy with computers. But this problem has me stumped. Im putting together a computer, bought all the parts i need, and i went to assemble it but no video is showing up, it turns on, fan runs dvd drive opens and HD is turning, but my monitor says no signal. The monitor works perfect, i hooked it up to my laptop to test it. I have reseated the RAM, checked every single plug and switch. Any ideas on what it could be? Dead motherboard, bad CPU? Im gonna try unhooking everything and re hooking it up tomorrow and hope that fixes it. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Slacky McSlackAss
Can you try the video card in a different computer? Can you try a different video card in this computer? Its an AGP video card. everything else works fine, i plug in the keyboard in the PS/2 port and it lights up fine USB is working. This is quite frustrating. BTW, its an Intel motherboard, g965 series. Now one thing is the processor was a gift from my aunt who works for intel, so when i got it it had no box just an envelope, could something have happened during transport, ie going thru metal detectors? (Another pic, bird's-eye view.) Those heatsinks on the motherboard are for the motherboard's Northbridge and Southbridge chips. They won't cool the processor itself. If you don't have a heatsink and fan for that, you need one to sit right on top of the CPU or it will overheat. Edit: Also, the only listings I'm finding for the Intel DG965SS Motherboard show it taking PCI-Express, not AGP.

I'm assuming that since it came in an envelope that it didn't come with an attached HSF. You absolutely don't want to run that system without a HSF on your proc. Also, are you using a video card or the integrated graphics? And if it's a card, what is the model? Further, if it is a card, it won't be AGP on that motherboard (it doesn't have an AGP slot ) Link to overview of your board. Actually, looking back over your posts, it looks like you're using a card- Are you sure that you have your monitor plugged in to the right output? Problem solved, no processor fan or heat sink = no run. lol. dont know how i could have overlooked that. and im using an integrated card. Ill be buying the fan and heat sink this weekend and will install it then. thanks for your help everyone. Hopefully i havent done much damage to the cpu, but intel does say that it shuts off auto at 100 degrees C. Thats what i get for getting a free processor, event though it is a $300 one. Yeah, the processor is probably fine since it most likely shut off. It's really frustrating when you take the time to put a computer together with all the wire management and such, just to find out that it doesn't work. I recently built my own and had the same problem with no signal. I unplugged everything, took everything out of the case, tried every possible thing I could think of until I finally just decided to buy a cheap stick of ram which got my system to boot up so I could change the ram voltage settings. What a pain. I guess the processor didn't come with a cpu fan for some reason? Remember to get some thermal paste if the cpu fan you buy doesn't come with any. And it's probably good to test out the stability of your system before you just decide it's okay.
dfitzo53
Once you get the heatsink and fan installed, download and run either CoreTemp or IntelTAT (both are available free). They'll tell you how hot your CPU is running. In fact, if you run them while running a stress test like Prime95 or Orthos (also both free) you'll be able to tell if your CPU runs too hot while under stress. Fred Jones
Don't forget to use good thermal paste between the heat sink and the cpu. Put just enough to have a smooth coating, usually a drop or two. You'll know it is too much when you lock down the heat sink and it squirts out the side. Slacky McSlackAss
Thanks guys, i feel so dumb for forgetting the fan and heatsink. This was my first stab at putting together a system. DFitzo, i dont think ill be needing IntelTAT just because my case came with a probe wire that displays my CPU and HDD temp on an external casing. Just went out and bought a cpu fan with a built in heat sink which ill be installing this weekend. But how long should i wait for the thermal paste to dry before hooking everything back up? I'd recommend you still run a temp monitoring program, especially if your system shows any instability. Those case sensors can give inaccurate readouts. But if your computer runs smoothly, you're probably fine.
Slacky McSlackAss
Well, I installed the cpu fan and heatsink, they both run fine, but still no video. Once again, clueless as to what it could be. HD is spinning, fans run, cd tray opens, all lights work, keyboard lights up, only thing not working is video and USB(most likely due to drivers). any ideas guys? How the heck do you know that the USB isn't working if you can't even verify that the system is starting up? Also... does that mean your keyboard is PS/2? My honest suggestion to you after reading that you didn't even think to stick a fan on your CPU is this: Check to see if the monitor is plugged in to both the computer and the wall, if it is then go consult a professional. The fan had competely blanked my mind, dnot know why it did. As far as consulting a professional, ill prolly end up taking it somewhere this week as im tired of playing around with this thing. And yes the monitor is plugged in, and the only free keyboard i have at the moment is a PS/2 one.
swisha
Hmm, You are using an onboard video, right? And your monitor says "no signal?" If this is the case, then honestly, it's either your mobo is messed up or the processor. Do you hear any beep after turning your computer on? If your HD is blank, it should beep when it does not find an OS. If you have another processor, try using that.

I got it as a gift from my aunt who works at intel so i was not given any box or warranty info on it. I have a feeling something may have happened during the transit from CA. Kinda sucks, looks like Newegg will be getting some returns from me if that is the case.
