halter91
I decided to rebuild the machine, I got most of it off, but there was still some spyware there.
TheMalcolmConnection
Ah, boo. SUPERAntispyware is great for that hard-to-remove junk. Also, you should have run all the programs in safe mode with system restore off.
Larry
The comment about system restore is a good one. System Restore is a feature of Windows (a good one, IMO, but one that's inconvenient in this context) that creates backup copies of critical Windows files on a regular basis, and when you boot the machine, if it detects that those files are missing, it restores them from the backup. The potential problem is that, if the file is missing because your spyware removal program deleted it, then system restore will obligingly re-install the spyware for you. Without telling you. ----- Running the programs in safe mode can be a good or a bad thing. In Safe Mode, most of the programs that run automatically on startup don't get run. (This can include the spyware.) So running your cleaner in safe mode can mean that it runs faster (it's not competing with as many other programs for CPU time), and might do a better job cleaning (because the spyware hasn't been loaded into memory). OTOH, in safe mode, a lot of the Windows Registry isn't there, and the registry is one of the places that the cleaner looks for problems. So in safe mode, it's possible for Spybot to say you're clean, when you're not.

Enter Apotheosis
Riiiiiggggggghhhhhhhtttttttt. It's the user's fault. Those ignorant users should know better then to add code to their e-mail program so that people on the internet can run programs on their computer simply by e-mailing it to them. And there's no security problem at all with a web browser that gives every web page on the internet permission to modify the operating system, simply by visiting the web page. After all, everybody knows that an operating system just won't work unless it includes a web browser that has the ability to modify the OS. Never said Windows was without fault To me, it just seems like a lot of people are bashing something they never really took the time to actually learn. Its like trashing evolution with only the vague concept of "man is descended from ape" and no idea how it happens... or trashing the PS3 when you've only tried the 360... or any of the numerous other tailgate debates
Baculus
SmitfraudFix will generally fix this issue - it is usually what I recommend to folks. See - my suggested "antivirus/malware" sticky thread would have been helpful! ;-) Edit: Looks like Mooka is on the ball with this subject.

Coach Williams
Webroot Spy Sweeper or Spyware Doctor. Not Ad Aware, not Spybot, not Windows Defender which is a joke. Sometimes you have to pay to get real protection. THANK YOU......I can't stand when people mention those sub-par lackluster databases..... Adaware, windows defender, spybot, counter spy, ewido ( avgas ), pestpatrol. zonealarm, etc...... it's all secondary cmpared to webroot........I love SW dr too but it seems to eat up too much cpu% and is having issues with vista......I love vista more than SW dr so he's gotta go..... Mania
I have an unopened version of Webroot Spysweeper that I would be willing to sell you that I purchased last week. I purchased 5 copies because I needed it for two computers and purchasing 5 was less than purchasing two. I'd be willing to sell it to you for $15.00 if your interested. PM me if you are interested.
