Om
By the way, apologies for posting and running before. I try to be around on days these things get posted to answer questions/comments. But yesterday my wife and I took our first kid off to college--a long, physically and emotionally draining day to say the least. For those who have been there ... damn. For those who have not ... well, you'll see. For the record, my daughter's fine. Like my wife, she's strong. Me, I'm a wreck. So go easy on me for a couple days.
Boots
Good stuff OM!! I hope you're right about the D. I'd like to see the offense get a little swagger of it's own. Good luck to you and your daughter, I have several years left before I have to face that day.
Om
Thanks for the kind words, all. Let's just hope we didn't jinx either the apparent Return of the Swag OR the hint of that perhaps at long last the Angry Gridiron Gods have turned their eyes elsewhere. Lombardi's_kid_brother
I see the sunshine boys are out this morning. No disrespect but, did any of you guys actually read the piece? I always print out your work and read it on the toilet at work. And honestly, that is the highest honor a writer can receive from me. I once read Huckleberry Finn in the john over one glorious August. Lots of cookouts. Lots of corn on the cob. So, the answer is, yes.

cphil006
speed is better on defense. Not neccessarily track speed, but when you stick Landry and Fletcher in there the instincts are truely more impressive than their predecessors. Landry is just a rookie but looks like he has better reaction than any safety there last season. That translates to reading the offense faster and attacking the play. That correlates to improved speed.
SkinsFTW
Losing Adam Archuleta and Warrick Holdman makes the whole defense look faster and turns them into better tacklers. Landry, McIntosh, Fletcher vs Archuleta, Holdman, and Marshall. Hmmmmm? Springs/Smoot or Rumph and Wright? LOL
Om
The speed is definitely evident. What's struck me even more is the attitude, though. The entire defensive unit, from starters on down, just looks hungry. The contrast between this year and last at the same time is impossible to miss. And to me, it's also impossible to overstate the significance there. If one believes that last year's problems were more about chemistry than talent (not that the talent hasn't been significantly upgraded), as I do, there is simply no better sign that whatever ailed them last year was in fact an anomaly that has been rectified, and Skins fans can once again expect a defense that leaves blood on the field every weekend. CPortJGibbs89
Great as always OM. I agree that the swagger is back. Last year they did not gang tackle like they did in the past and they seem to be doing that again this year. I also notice that Laron seems to have a fire inside of him when he gets on the field. Whenever he is in on a play he is constantly in the other teams face talking ****. Thats a good thing because it keeps other guys fired up and the mentality of your going to have to earn every yard you get against us. I think this could possibly be the best unit we have had since GW has been here. I cant wait to see them tonight. I was watching comcast the other night and they were talking about the Ravens wanting to have a really good showing offensively tonight since they were so poor the week before. I hope we shut them down and shut up all the damn Ravens fans.

I hope and wish the best for you and your family. It'll be fine, I'm sure. Besides, what can we Dad's to do besides be brave and worry like heck? She'll be fine. You, I'm not so sure. I dread the day my oldest daughter flys the coop, heading off to college.

Fortunately, time is a great healer ... and there is drink in the meantime. As to the swagger angle, let me put it this way: Would you rather have them look like they have through 2 preseason games this year, or how they looked through 2 preseason games last year? Me too. Kindred
Call it a swagger, call it a chip on the shoulder, all I know is that they are playing like last year was an embarrassment and now they've got something to prove (which it was and yes they do). No more overconfidence, no more 'its only preseason' bs. We're setting the tone NOW for the rest of the season. No more dicking around boys and girls, this is Redskins football. hail :logo:
JRAB
let me put it this way: Would you rather have them look like they have through 2 preseason games this year, or how they looked through 2 preseason games last year? Me too. No question at all really... all you have to do is go back and read my posts in the preseason last year. I was trying to tell anyone who would listen that looking disfunctional in the preseason wasn't a case of Gibbs trying to give the NFL a false sense of security. I'd much rather look competent, like we do this year. I still worry a lot about the offense, and I think there is a ceiling on how good the defense can be due to our DL - but we do look better than last year. Of course, I do think Gibb's preseason approach has changed a bit. He knew that he couldn't afford another preseason where we looked like ****. The natives are restless enough without the team looking like last year. I think he is preparing more and focusing more on our preseason opponents and how we look than what he did prior to this season. I think that's precisely why we didn't see Jason Campbell against the Ravens defense during the scrimmage. Joe was aware that Redskins nation was watching and also knew he couldn't afford for Campbell to get up there and look terrible. I'm sure it isn't foremost in Gibbs' mind - but he's aware of it this year more than ever before. So, I take the clear improvement with a large grain of salt. The changed approach could improve the team and the chemistry - but it could also be a case of simply trying to win the games a little more as well. Now, he knows his second shift at the helm of the Redskins isn't looking too good and, while I don't know for sure - I feel like he probably is doing more to ensure the team doesn't look terrible in preseason - at least when we fans are watching. Like I said, some of that will likely help the team in the regular season... some though, might be a case of simply preparing more for preseason opponents. That could lull us fans into thinking we're more competitive than we really are. Just my :2cents: of course.
#98QBKiller
:applause: We have a deep secondary, a revamped LB corps and a healthy DL, all commanded by Gregg Williams and that is a recipe for disaster for opposing offenses. IF our team stays healthy I honestly believe that we'll have one of the more dominant Ds just like 2 and 3 years ago. If our offense can follow....lookout playoffs here we come!
