BLOG: Is The Swagger Back?

Excellent read

About that swagger, three guys come to mind with it

Laron Landry Rocky Macintosh and London Fletcher

All 3 of these guys are flying around, making plays everywhere. And Landry and Rocky let the offense know not to come back there

Landry in particular plays with a real meaness on the field, something that clearly was missing last season. He wants to punish you for coming into his area of the field

Any expert will tell you that swagger is the most important element to a defense.

But I think it is important not to forget another major element: that being tackling.

The defense's tackling seems to be far better these past two games without the Speed Bumps known as Marshall and Holdman out there.

(I still think it is really hard to win without a pass rush though).

Good looking out Om, and I think must of us feel the same about the defense getting it's swagger back.

Now! whip out those tapes again and give us an analysis of the offense from the same years compared to this years Pre-season.

And I'm also waiting for game 3 this upcoming Saturday, to see how our starters do against the Ravens and playing a little longer as in most game 3 Pre-season games.

OH! Did I mention whip out the offense analysis?

I think it takes more than 2 preseason games to develop a swagger after the season they had last year.

It should at least.

No it shouldn't. You have to have a swagger every time you set foot on the field. Lack of swagger leads to lack of aggression which leads to 31st ranked defenses.

23. New Orleans Saints - 83.7 ypg.

24. Detroit Lions - 80

24. New England Patriots - 80

24. St. Louis Rams - 80

27. Cincinnati Bengals - 79.5

28. Kansas City Chiefs - 75.5

29. Chicago Bears - 62.5

30. Indianapolis Colts - 62

31. Washington Redskins - 60

32. Philadelphia Eagles - 45

Make of it what you will.

I sure hope this isn't more fuel for your "It's All About the QB" theory, cause this would be a bit of a reach. :)

Great blog entry, and I agree, the swagger on defense is back. They're playing with much more purpose and ferocity. And the addition of Landry and McIntosh in the lineup has transformed us from an aging old group to an athletically domainant one almost immediately.

Win or lose, so long as we play with this same intensity on that side of the ball, JC (and also perhaps yon football Gods :point2sky) will take care of the rest.

great post man. we have made several improvements to this defense, and i think the boosted confidence from the talent increase is a major factor in retaining the swagger.

fletcher was such a great pick up for us. he is a true playmaker and leader, and believe he will be the face of our transformed defense.

sean taylor wont have to be our leading tackler this year because of fletcher and will be able to make plays in the secondary. we were very weak over the deep middle last year, and taylor having to account for the run more than he should have had a great deal to do with that.

i also really like rocky mcintosh. he will have a breakout year this year and be recognized nationally as a top tier young linebacker. just watch the way he flies around the field. we missed that intensity last year.

this defense will suprise everyone but us.

I to have noticed a different swagger with this D in the pre-season. The main that sticks out to me is the tackling. Not many arm tackles being dished out. But a slight concern for right now is still the secondary. They have been playing good but in both games I noticed that receivers have been able to make catches in the 10- 15 yard range. Not many but enough for me to wonder if we face a team that likes to run pass plays in that range could mean trouble.

But all in all I'm loving what I'm seeing. The first stringers are playing like its the playoffs. Being stingy and what not.

I hope the D keeps up this momentum all year long and that the O starts gaining steam in these last 2 preseason games.

Until we start winning "real" games, I think it's too soon to be talking about the swagger being back. We went 5-11 last season and, just because the defense has played well in pre-season doesn't necessarily mean that it will continue on when the bullets start flying. Everyone thought Steve Spurrier was going to be a HUGE hit here when we went to Osaka during the pre-season and beat the 49ers.

Don't mean to be doom and gloom, but I'd rather see how things develop in September and October first.

Let them win an actual game first, then they can develop a swagger.

I see the sunshine boys are out this morning.

No disrespect but, did any of you guys actually read the piece? I you did, you would have noticed I was clearly talking about what we've seen through two preseason games, and looking at them in comparison to how the team looked last year at this point. Seriously, did you watch the body language in preseason last year? And have you watched either of the games so far this year? If you have, and haven't seen the contrast, I'm not sure what else there is to say.
