DeanCollins
bschurm was passing thru St. Pete yesterday afternoon on his way to FSU for the fall semister. He was staying with a girl friend of his in a so so neighborhood, not too serious just mostly full of people living on the fringe. Because bschurm had a uhaul attatched to his bronco, he asked if I'd drive to grab some pizza. I was parked out front of his friends house, a semi dark side street, while he was finishing a story. I was in the wife's sebring convertible, top down parked with the lights off. all the sudden a car came barrelling about 40 mph down our side of the street. I wasn't too concerned because I figured he would steer back over to the right, a couple seconds went by fast and luckily I turned on the headlites about 15 feet before that car would've hit head on. At the last second he swerved. He/she never took their foot off the gas and I really couldn't believe that they didn't hit us. I had already resigned that I was on the way to the hospital or worse. You know it's bad when you see over and over in your mind. If I hadn't of turned on the headlite when I did things would've been a lot different today. I will use the parking lights for now on
ldysknzfn1
Sheesh. Glad you turned those lights on when you did. Did you hyperventilate? I would have. Glad you didn't get hurt. Peace

Dean, with all the times you've cheated death, you actually questioned whether you'd survive yet another near-death experience ? Come on, man, you got balls of steel, nothin's gonna kill you, you'll outlive Fidel Castro. The only question is when you gonna write a book about all this shnit ? jrockster21
Glad to hear you're all good, Dean. I've had a couple close calls in the car in which I thought I was surely gonna be in the hospital for weeks, but managed to avoid the accidents. :knocks on wood: Not to dampen the mood, but the way Castro is going, outliving him won't be much of an accomplishment. :secret: It was a joke, dude. Peace I'm still hyperventilating  Dean, with all the times you've cheated death, you actually questioned whether you'd survive yet another near-death experience ?Come on, man, you got balls of steel, nothin's gonna kill you, you'll outlive Fidel Castro. The only question is when you gonna write a book about all this shnit ? Strange thing about that....when you're driving and lose control or somebody else's car is losing control, time slows down and a calm feeling comes across. I'm able to think complete thoughts and weigh them against each other in mili-seconds and then re-act. But sitting still with no momentum to affect a change in direction (no way out) is a totally different experience. There was no time warp but I did re-act. Whew. Nice quick thinking to flip the headlights on. see comment above. I didn't have time to think, I just did it and the driver turned instantly. Afterwards when I left, I drove down the street to turn around and there was cardboard box in the middle of the street that that driver was trying to avoid.Next time.... order delivery Now that you've cheated death again.... what are you going to do different?

bschurm
it's my eyesight, but brchurm is easier to say It's funny you mention eyesight because the reality is the car was about a 1/4 mile down the road when it swerved. I just wanted you to think it was a close call, it makes for a better story. j/k I thought for sure dude was gonna hit us.

mjah
Strange thing about that....when you're driving and lose control or somebody else's car is losing control, time slows down and a calm feeling comes across. I'm able to think complete thoughts and weigh them against each other in mili-seconds and then re-act. That is the truth. I've had a couple of moments in my car, typically sideways on the highway and heading right for the shoulder, when time just slowed down and I was completely calm. Couldn't do a damned thing about where I was going, but it was utterly serene. Very peaceful. Of course, as soon as I plummet over the edge of the highway embankment and come to a stop with my car wedged sideways in a snowbank, time catches RIGHT UP. And I do stupid, in-the-moment-but-not-thinking things like pulling the parking brake as I climb up and kick open the passenger door like a skylight to exit into a blizzard. As if the entire left side of the car is going to decide to un-bury itself and roll away. Good thing I have that E-brake on.

Riggins77
I had something like that happen to me in college. Me and the wife were stuck in traffic on a hill. The place where we were stuck comes down a hill, levels out, then down again (where we were gridlocked). I looked in the rearview and saw this car hauling ass down the first hill. In a split second, I pulled my car to the right in the shoulder and went up a few feet. My wife was freaking out and didn't know what was going on. Then we heard the brakes squeeling and the driver skided to a stop about 2 inches from the car that was in front of me. Needless to say, we would have gotten drilled in the back if I hadn't of moved. That really freaked her out.
