Winning Season Please!
Even if they are high on Blades, why sign an older linebacker who doesn't know the D or the players as well as LM? Seems like a waste. If we had let him go because we liked Blades and then signed an OL, then OK I can live with that. But this...not so sure this is a good move. Heidenreich
Maybe, just maybe, Marshall wanted out. He thought he deserved more playing time. He was a starter. Now he's on the bench behind Fletch, Washington, Rocky. Perhaps the kids are getting more reps in practice. Things aren't always as they first seem...... Art
Art, I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but Godfrey played for Williams in Tennessee in 2000. I know. And that will help. But, seven years and some schematic changes will at least be a little bit of a delay .

blchizzleke
everybody needs to think about this....this may be the BEST move by our front office in a while....sure hes been 'versatile' but the fact is last year he missed A LOT and i mean A LOT of tackles and in the preseason game against the steelers that trend continued....GW's defense is predicated on pressure and if the pressure does not get there it is predicated on extremely good tackling as most coverage guys are in a one on one situation due to the blitzing and that is something that marshall in no shape or form offers
Guest NebraSKIN
I think it was the final year of his contract anyway . . . so a decision had to be made, but I will miss his impact on special teams. I have not looked into the salary cap reasons, and this is wishful thinking, but maybe we will make a play for a guard like Faneca from the steelers or Kendall from the Jets. A HUGE leader.

China
Hmmm, not sure about this move.Remember how well Pierce communicated the playbook to the G-Men. Using that logic we should never cut anyone who's been on the team for a couple of years because they could communicate the playbook to another team. flashback
Sorry, guys, Marshall was a scrub. He was better than Holdman, but he was still a huge reason the Skins were historically bad on D in 2006.
sydshobob
I thought Godfrey only played middle linebacker but if he can play strong side then that shows me they have no confidence in anyone else behind Washington. The last thing they want to do is to go into the season with another gaping hole on defense. Releasing Marshall may not seem to make sense due to his versatility but if he can't tackle, he can't tackle. It happened to Andre Collins. One year he was fine, the next he couldn't tackle anybody. blchizzleke
a leader?? doubtful..he was a constant liability on the field...at some point your leadership has to be justified with play on the field and it never was for him....im sure he may be missed in the locker room but theyll move on....gw is trying to get fast on D and by releasing marshall we cant get much slower than marshall (admittingly i do not know how fast or slow godfrey is/was)....i know randall godfrey is old but he is still at least a solid back up who can do something marshall refused to....get to the ball and tackle
RyansRangers
I think he was a solid player not great but a good reserve. It was odd though that campbell was starting over him
dallasfan
Hmmm, not sure about this move.Remember how well Pierce communicated the playbook to the G-Men. Looks like those clowns in the front office did it again....what a bunch of clowns. (vague Simpsons reference) Ironically, if this is true, I expect the Giants to make a move for him, considering their hole at WSLB. But more than likely if this was true, this had more to due with Lamar not liking his playing time.
KingGibbs
Did I just wake up from a coma and it's April 1st? This is a BS move if so. Marshall knows this defense and with Washington's status up in the air Lemar's presence is even more important.
Zen-like Todd
It'll be interesting to see who takes Marcus Washington's spot in the starting lineup this weekend. It's been said that if Washington were to be out for a long period of time Rocky would move into his spot, but I'm guessing with MW slated to return for the opener they will keep him where is right now. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to move Blades outside.... I like the idea of getting him settled in at the MLB spot behind Fletcher. It seems likely that Campbell will take that spot unless Williams expects Godfrey to step in immediately. Who knows... I'd still like to get confirmation of the move. Weganator
Hmm.... well i am still holding out hope that Sartz will turn into a good Strong Side LB..... hopefully Godfrey will be able to help teach our younger LBs a thing or two..

D-Day
OK if true Marshall saves the team 1 mil in cap space. Godfrey will probably be vet minimum. So that counts .481 against the cap. This saves the team .519 in cap space.
DailyFanRedskins
I haven't been impressed with Marshall's tackling skills lately. I don't know what the solution is for him, but what I do know is that we have a crap load of linebackers in the development stages/coming out stages. No one player can't be replaced. Right Arrington? Gregpeck99
Sorry to see Marshall go ... he was fabulous in '05 and a consumate Redskin. Good luck Lamar! The good news is the Skins have really been upgraded at LB.

Lombardi's_kid_brother
Is this confirmed? Is Karl...er...I mean...Andyman still around? I always liked Godfrey as a player. Of course, that was during the 90s. I think he played both outside and inside in Dallas, but I am almost certain he played inside in San Diego. So, he has been versatile...and is bigger than Lemar. Still, I'm not sure at 33 and with an off-season of inactivity, what he brings to the table that Lemar doesn't.
