Ryan Clark, Antonio Piercer, Walt Harris... yeah the trend is definitely there. Still think that Marshall really stopped producing last year. He got beat out by 2nd year and rookies at camp. Sometimes you have to let youth replace old players. I just don't know why they would go with Godfrey. Unless its to add an insurance for Marcus Washington...

This move would probably make sense if they went with someone younger. But this doesn't make sense to bring in a guy that is older and costs more than the guy he is replacing. What's disappointing is that Gibbs continues to tell players how loyal he is to them but he continues to allow stupid moves like this to take place. This move tells players that if you play for the Skins your job is not guaranteed regardless of your time with them. The smartest thing this offseason was Shawn Springs not redoing his contract. We need a GM!!

Clark sucks and Harris was not that good over here. He may have done well in SF but he didn't play that way over here. The only player we shouldn't have let go was Pierce.

harris wasnt good out here, but you have to be kidding me about clark..... ryan clark was the perfect compliment to sean taylor. i like landry and all, but if we kept clark, then we dont make the archuleta mistake and we can go elsewhere with the draft

Considering he was only with the cowboys for 3 or 4 years, they apparently didn't care all that much about him in the first place...and considering he is with his 5th team, I don't see him really retiring with any particular team.

Chargers linebacker Randall Godfrey said he is calling it quits after 10 NFL seasons.

Godfrey said Friday that he soon will sign a one-day contract with the Cowboys, so he can finish his career where he started it.

Godfrey started his career with the Cowboys in 1996 before leaving in 2000 for a three-year stint with the Titans. He played for the Seahawks in 2003.

What's disappointing is how much people don't consider why such moves are made. This move tell players if you don't play as well as we need you to, you will be replaced, regardless of your time with the team.

It's amazing how upset people are we went 5-11 last year, but are also upset the team is taking action to improve.

Three things to consider:

1) The coaching staff sees the players in action 100x what the fans do. They know the difference between someone who's lost it and someone who had a couple of bad games.

2) The move had cap implications of about $600k. This move may be preceding another move about to happen. Marshall was one of the few players over $1M that could be moved without an overall cap hit.

3) Anyone could have signed Marshall by now at his current salary. No takers. He is overvalued by the fans. A 30yo bench player should get no more than the minimum, except for QBs. The FO gets criticized, fairly, for overvaluing players, but when they release an overpaid player, as confirmed by the rest of the league, they get criticized as well.

I mentioned that to him on page 18, of course he's gone now

Check your info before you insert foot.

1. His longest stint w/ any team was w/ the Cowboys

2. He mentions retiring as a Cowboy http://bolttalk.com/?p=1909

Considering he's mentioned retiring as a Cowboy and this is another littl something about he would like to play for Wade Phillips in Dallas.

See where im coming from now? http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070221/news_1s21godfrey.html

this is simple to me.

Lemar was solid as a pass defender and off the line tackler.

Our weaknesses were run defense and pass rush. Lemar was very bad at these things because he was too light and got pushed around by lead blockers and O-linemen.

Bye, Bye Lemar. Hello Godfrey, more of a run stopper and a bit better at rushing the QB.

Our DB depth can handle coverage.

I agree, at best Lamar would make his mark as a ST player, K Campbell cost less and can do the same job. Godfrey can make a greater impact and spell washington so he can stay healthy year round. We have atleast 6 players that have 1 year or rookie LBs, they have time to develop in GW defense. P.S. I will never forget that hit he made on Julius Jones for a saftey :dallasuck , it was one play he doesnt make too often. I bet Flecter will make those plays with ease

I believe it comes down to 4 things;

1 Lamar 225 lbs Godfrey 245 lbs, we want to stop the run first Godfrey's bigger and has had a better carear, he's better at plugging up holes not getting run over.

2 Godfrey only wants to play 2 more seasons, the staff must see enough in the rookies to think they'll be able to replace our current starters or atleast they're back ups in the next couple years.

3 Godfrey comes from a winning team including playing in the Chargers playoff game, Joe likes to bring in winners that can help in the locker room and be possitive.

4 Marshall is a converted safty that cant handle the beating that it takes being a linebacker especially in the middle or strong side, and he wasn't as good as Rocky.

Godfrey is a decent linebacker, and will be an asset -- once he re-acquaints himself with the new Williams schemes and the Redskin players. On the other hand Marshall was versatile, he knew Williams defensive schemes, and he was part of that team-chemistry thing.

Considering the age of our linebacking corp (Godfrey, Fletcher) and the injury history (Washington, McIntosh) I would have thought having a versatile backup made sense from a depth and insurance perspective. Consequently, I can see a lot of reaons to have kept Marshall, and let someone else go. (Frankly I'm still not sold on Sartz, although I'm pleased with how well Blades is doing.)

Now I didn't focus on Marshall's play this preseason, so I don't know if he played poorly or not. But with the exception of last year, Marshall has played okay for the Skins. Marshall's also several years younger than Godfrey (who's close to the end of his career) and Lemar probably has a cheaper contract. That said, I think Godfrey is probably a more talented player, so I can see why they picked him up. (Assuming this linebacker hunt is over now, I hope the Skins managed to keep some space under the cap to pick up a decent DE pickup and possibly a LG., which I saw as bigger concerns.)

Also, as I said earlier, I'm not sure why we were so eager to jettison Marshall -- we didn't even try to trade him to some team, or at least wait to find out if we were going to need him . Hopefully, Marshall doesn't wind up with the Eagles or the Giants.

:poke: THE POINT: The way I see it, Gibbs & Co have rolled the dice again --so it's "So long, Catfish" ...and here's hoping that our remaining linebacking corp doesn't get too nicked up!! And if the starting LBs should get too nicked up, here's hoping the 'rooks' can step in and fill their roles adequately.

Lemar Marshall was a starter for most of the past 3 seasons in Washington. He is 30 years old. There is a good chance that he can be a contributor for a team at the weakside position in the NFL still. He wasn't going to get that chance here with Rocky McIntosh ahead of him at age 24.

The idea of playing Marshall, only 227 pounds, at strongside in place of Marcus Washington just didn't make sense. He clearly didn't have the size and strength at the point of attack to be successful in this role if Marcus ended up missing meaningful time.

For 2007 Godfrey is an upgrade on Marshall.

He fell into our laps in similar fashion to Todd Wade in 2006.

This was a good signing by Washington.

For all those people that are arguing we have no depth and can't suffer a single injury, here is at least one additonal position where we have decent coverage, if not better than that.

I agree with several of the posters here that Dallas Sartz does not appear to be a player that is going to be more than practice squad material in 2007. He was projected to the SLB spot on the outside but is in no position to play in the regular defense in place of Washington, even in the preseason. At 6'4 and 236, Sartz needs to fill out to the 245 range and build strength to hold up on the outside in the NFL.
