Dear Clinton Portis...

Dear Clinton Portis,

I am writing this letter in hopes of inspiring you to return to your top-five running back form and elite status you had worked so hard to earn before the start of last season. It seems to me that because of one injury-plagued season, many people forget what a force you are carrying the rock. I feel obligated, as a result, to come to your defense and attempt to wait patiently for Miami to see you send a message to the rest of the NFL.
is just one video which gives viewers a glimpse into the force you are when you are healthy and have the ball in your hands.

You suffered through some injuries last season, no doubt about how it affected us, and people have been quick to jump all over you and claim you are "injury prone" or "not a durable long-term running back". This, clearly, is nonsense, as one year with some unfortunate injuries somehow taking away from an otherwise remarkable career so far is not even worth mentioning. You have taken all the necessary precautions in the offseason to bounce back after missing most of last year, and in year two of Saunders' offense with your skills, I see you making serious moves this year (See: Larry Johnson). The offense began to click last year towards the end of the season, and your backup Ladell Betts was the beneficiary of this newfound understanding of the system and how/why it works. Don't get me wrong, I am a Betts fan. I think he is a good runner and a more-than-capable backup, but to say he deserves to split carries with you, or to even insinuate that he is anywhere close to your level is blasphemy.

I'm sure you care as little as I do about stats and more about helping the team with with your game-changing dynamics, but in case people want a fact-based argument on why you will have a career year this year, let's take a look. Before last year's injury-shortened campaign, you have never rushed for less than 1300 yards, and your transition year with the Skins was the only one since you entered the league where you had less than 11 rushing touchdowns. In 2002, you were named NFL offensie rookie of the year. You were a pro-bowler in 2003. In 2005, you became only the third runner in league history to rush for 1500 yards in 3 of your first 4 seasons. You were a yard short of 100 for your yards-per-game average in your first four years. You had nine 100-yard rushing games throughout the season. You also carried our team to the playoffs late in the year when we had that epic five-game win streak to earn a postseason berth; as the rest of our offense continued to struggle, you produced five straight 100-yard games and 6 touchdowns. In 2006, before your injury, you ran a 4.26 second 40-yard dash in training camp. In regards to both scheme and personnel, you now have an offense with the pieces in place around you to open up the field in a dramatic way compared to the defenses you were seeing in '04 and '05.

Basically what I'm saying is this. You are an animal. You have an opportunity to open the eyes of NFL players, coaches, analysts, and fans across the country and bring the Redskins back into relevance when talking about NFL powerhouses. So please, come back with a vengeance this year, and put your speed, vision, strength, and elusiveness on display. Remind people what it looks like to see #26 explode through a hole for a huge gain or grind out yardage up the gut with reckless abandon. I don't care if you never play another snap in pre-season for the rest of your NFL career, but I can't say enough that our offense can't wait to have you in the backfield again, and (knock on wood) barring injuries, I fully expect you to have a career year, somewhere in the 1700-yard, 20-touchdown range. Just don't go making any more form tackles. Hail.

Sincerely,

Southeast Jerome

Plain and simple ... Clinton, if you want to be the man you got to beat the man... In this case, if you want to be paid big bucks and consider yourself an elite back ... then it's time to earn it.

Most of the backs that are in the top bracket are ALL VERY DURABLE - unfortunately, you are not. Time to get into game shape, and show what you have to compete against running backs like LT from San Diego...

In tha video, I see a lot of 8 - 10 yard runs and getting caught from behind. No doubt that he runs hard, fights for the extra yard, etc, but his only truely great run was against the Eagles with the spin move he made to get to the end zone. Other then a couple of runs like the above mentioned, the Houston run, etc, what makes you say, wow he is a great runner.

Someone make a video of the greatest runs of LT, LJ, Tiki, Stephen Jackson, Gore, etc it makes Portis look average, plain and simple.

CP must have been pretty durable to carry us as far as he did in 2005. He just had an unlucky year, it happens to the best. I don't beleive the common opinion that one bad year makes you suddenly injury prone.

Anyway, here's to another healthy 1,500 yard season and a deep playoff run!

Why do we get all these retarded letters to players here?

Guess what? They aren't members!! If you want to send him something find a post office or his myspace page.

You just sound like the 3 year old kid on Christmas Eve in the middle of the night wishing that they hear reindeer and Santa on the roof and are bringing them all the presents that they asked for!!

One word: Ridiculous!!!

Does your analysis include? (in order): the 30-yarder against Tampa, 20-yard td pass against NYG, 20-yard run against NYG, 20-yard run against Tampa, 15-yard run against Tampa, 15-yarder against Dallas, 15-yarder against Philly, 25-yarder against Arizona, 15-yard catch against San Fran, or the 15-yarder against Minnesota, all with 8+ guys in the box as a result of brunell being under center......among other plays not shown on the highlight reel. please--hate harder. just because he doesn't get the press those other guys get on sportscenter doesn't mean he's not just as good of a back. you seem to fall into the "what have you done for me lately" category cp has talked about...which is fine. just remember me at the end of the season.

Yin and Yang

When there's 8 in the box to stop Clinton there will be a man downfield catching a pass from Jason. When there's no men downfield open because we burnt them Clinton will be busting moves for big gains as well as effectively moving the chains.

Whilst the Clinton doubters are noisy they are a minority, most of us can remember how good he is and are pumped at the thought of him playing in the B&G with a QB who stretches the field in the second year of Al's transformation.

What I like most about Clinton is that he is a legit homerun threat that is either taking the ball up or picking up the blitzer and laying them out. When he's on the field he's always doing his utmost to positively change the game in our favour, ball in hand or not.

Are you seriously putting in 15 yard runs? 15 yard catches? He is getting paid to be an elite back, which he has never ever ever been here in Washington. Your memory is that good to know that 8 players where in the box all those times? How bout against the rest of the elite running backs, against LT, which recievers are scary and with a rookie QB. I guess they where playing Nickle and Dime everytime he ran. Same for LJ, those WR are elite arnt they! Simple facts are, when he first came here, he couldnt stay balanced, and often fell or slipped. Now before he was hurt, if he did get thru the hole, he got caught from behind. You may love him for his personality, for his costumes, but I want a football player that earns what he makes.

I am not hating, I support my team, but I am not blinded by homerism either. I see what LB did for us last year, and

When he was in Denver, guess what, he ran by players, he made them miss, he was on sportscenter being an elite back. We gave up Champ ( I can hear the cries now "he didnt want to be here" bs) for an slightly above avg RB for the best CB in the game. Brilliant.

Questions...

What do you count as a HR in football? A long run for a TD would probably be most closely compared to hitting one out of the park...

so how many HR's does Clinton have here in Washington, can you name them for me please? I want to see if there is any validity that Clinton is a HR threat.

Question when was portis ever caught from behind, It could be Betts you're talking about caught from behind and than fumbled. Now LT is an elite back

thanks to sportcenter and his FB. If portis was still in denver the top two backs in the league would be CP and LT now that he in D.C. he's not? Show some type of loyalty to this man he may have 70 & 80 yard td runs, but has done something they haven't and that is rush for 1500+ yards in his first 2 seasons 1300+ his 3rd 1500+ his 4th and took us to the playoffs. You are apart of the what have you done for me lately crowd I see, especially when compare him to any back that has only had one break-out year (ex. gore, jackson, betts)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, you named 1 run in 3 years.

So that must mean that

Travis Henry is a HR hitting back, he had a 70 yard run

Chester Taylor, 95 yard run

Ahman Green, 70 yard run

Julius Jones, 77 yard run

In 2004 when Clinton had his "HR"

Michael Pitmann - 78 yard run

Kevin Barlow - 60 yard run

Nick Goings - 57 yard run

Are you suggesting all the RB's I provided above are HR hitting backs?

When was he caught from behind, look at the video you supplied! Oh how about the Bears run he had close to our own end zone. You never see him outrun someone in the secondary, Clinton is now a put down my shoulder and try to run thru someone.

Are you that stupid to say that LT is only an elite back because of SportsCenter and his FB Neal. That statement right there shows that you are not even worth arguing with in this thread. But I have nothing better to do. I guess you dont remember that run he had against us at home do you?

This is not the same CP that was in Denver, plain and simple so you cant put out those stats. Every year he has looked more and more like a good back but exceled greatly behind Denver's line.

He did not take us to the playoffs, no single player does. He was a part of it, but Brunell during that time had a really good 5 game stretch and our Defence played very well. Get the "Clinton took us to the playoffs" nonsense. It was a team effort.

I am not part of the "Johnny come lately" crowd, im part of the "When will you show up for what we traded for and paid crazy money" crowd. I see that you part of the "I like my Kool-aid Burgandy and Gold" crowd.

Well considering you posted the video I would think you would have watched it. The box was not even close to being stacked in most of those clips. Try again though.

I guess I am that stupid, But I did not supply the video. Cp is in elite company he's one of six backs to reach 6000 yard the fastest in NFL history, but I am stupid for saying he is an elite back and guess what LT is not one of them last time I checked. The man had 1300+ yards his first season with washington

and the man missed 3 games, 1500+ his 2nd season and hurt his 3rd but you are not apart of the Johnny come lately crowd yeah right. Do me a favor clean your chin Champ did not want to be here no matter what we would have paid him do you understand that money was not the issue. LT is in a west coast style offense and does not have 8 or 9 people stackd in the box, and let's not talk about their o-line, but Cp does it regardless of what he has to work with. Yes he is an elite back in my mind and 90% of the nfl's also(Portis). Now when you finish with that napkin don't forget to burn it!!!!

Me fail english, thats unpossible.

First, let me get some questions out of the way

So your saying that Clinton Portis is a better RB then Ladainian Tolminson?

You didnt supply the video but yet use it as a reference to your argument before?

You still believe that Clinton Portis is the same RB that he was in Denver?

Do you understand that a lot of the video you posted, that 8 men where not in the box as funguy pointed out.

Thanks, I will try to find a nice place for my napkin.

wow you officially just made yourself look like an idiot!

Point 1.) Clinton Portis did NOT miss three games in 2004. He missed ONE and only averaged a measly 3.7 YPC while only picking up FOUR TD's on the ground and TWO in the air. Some elite back he is....

Point 2.) Since when did Mary Schottenheimer run a west coast offense:doh: Just because they play on the west coast doesnt mean they run a west coast offense:laugh:
