I did a serch, I couldn't find anything. I know it's yesterdays news, but because no one mentioned it from what I can see, I thought I'd pass it on, so we can all thorw our 2 cents in.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/don_banks/08/14/snaps/index.html

Quote:

Write it down and remind me if I'm wrong at the end of the year: Denver's Jay Cutler will outperform both Vince Young and Matt Leinart this year in the competition between Class of '06 quarterbacks; San Francisco's Alex Smith will handily outgun Jason Campbell among Class of '05 passers; and San Diego's Philip Rivers will put together the best season among Class of '04 members Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, J.P. Losman and Matt Schaub.

Handily? Wonder what he means by that? I think I will write this one down. With all due respect to A.Smith and the 49ers going in a new direction, I don't know if handily is such a great word for him to use. Having a new offensive coordinator might have some impact on him as well. (Even though Jim Hostler was the QB coach before being promoted)

So are my burgundy coloured glasses on and can't see? But "Handily"?

Nah, its just a snap judgment peice. I saw the Monday night game and to tell you the truth, both offenses did look great. But that could be a product of both defenses as well.

I cant remember San Fran or Denver ever having defense to be afraid of.

Well Denver has great corners. But again it was just pre-season.

Even David Carr has looked amazing in Pre-season games when he was with the Texans

JC wont make too many passes when he's kissing the grass after whoever the Left Guard was suppose to block gets through. The kid needs protection if he's going to be successful.

A Smith may or may not be a better QB, but he doesnt have to worry about getting nailed from his blind side on every second play.

I love how just to fill the need for news we get snap judgements after one preseason game. If JC didn't get blindsided on that drive and led us to a score who knows what it could have said about him....Pretty worthless....

Looking at the rest of this piece, have you guys noticed how writers are all over Cutler?? Young has already PROVEN himself as a winner so IMO Cutler has a lot to do just to meet what VY accomplished last season.....

Dude chill out....we were missing 2 key players there.

Smith should be further ahead in his development - he's started a lot more games than JC. Will he rack up more yards and TD's? Very debateable.

Cooley>>>Davis

Portis>>>Gore

Moss>>>Anyone they got at WR

If I was an NFL GM:

V. Davis>Cooley

Portis>Gore

Moss=Darrell Jackson

and Gore is certainly on the up, while Portis very well may have seen his best football.

In terms of talent:

V. Davis > Cooley

Portis > Gore

Moss > Jackson

In terms of production:

Cooley > Davis

Portis > Gore

Jackson > Moss

In terms of potential for future production:

Cooley = Davis (although now Davis has an injury that could plague him for the rest of his career)

Portis > Gore (Portis has experience, Gore is fumble-prone, and Gore has the injury bug dating back to his college days, ALSO, Portis is only 25 and his best years may very well be ahead of him)

Moss > Jackson (Jackson is a little bit older and not nearly as explosive as Moss, however he has averaged more TDs per year starting, about 9, compared to Moss, who averages about 7)

I think it's unfair and stupid for Banks to compare the two just because they were drafted the same year. Smith's has 1 whole year of starting experience on Jason, so I would expect Smith to look better. It's also kind of ridiculous to make these judgements based on 1 preseason game. All I care about is how wins Jason delivers.

Well since many people on this thread are saying that Alex Smith should be better (even though comparing them last year, JC was better) because he has a whole year starting, let's compare their first year's starting:

JC

Comp% = 53.1

TD:INT = 1.7:1

Rating = 76.5

AS

Comp% = 50.9%

TD:INT = 1:11 (that's right, he only scored 1 TD in 9 games)

Rating = 40.8

I didn't use yards, total TDs, total INTs because those aren't rates. I used rates because JC only played in 7 games.

BTW, Alex Smith had a 74.8 QB rating last year, in his second year starting, which is still lower than Jason Campbell's 76.5 rating. Honestly, anyway you slice it, JC has been better.

Don Banks is a moron.
