Observations

This morning's practice was essentially a light walk-through, so this won't be a typical two-a-day, in fitting with the overall tenor of camp. Saturday should be interesting, since the Skins have had it relatively easy compared to a lot of teams, and the Steelers are in the running for election into the Two-A-Day Hall of Fame.

Like we've said, maybe none of this matters at all. Only time will tell.

So nothing to be gained from a talent-evaluation standpoint this morning. Pretty much everyone was on the field, since there was no contact at all, even guys like Chris Samuels (who says he would like to get some reps in the final preseason game if possible).

WR Brandon Lloyd says he will practice this afternoon and "definitely" wants to play Saturday. Says the trainers and coaches pulled him out of the lineup at Tenn., but that he wanted to play. WR Antwaan Randle El (quad) was back out there too.

OL Todd Wade was back out there as well, and everyone except for Clinton Portis, Samuels and poor Tyler Ecker (this kid should be fearing the Turk something fierce right about now) took part in the walk through.

With that stuff out of the way, I'll make a few observations before hitting Wegmans for lunch:

The depth at WR and OL does not look great. Todd Wade needs to take a major step up and someone must emerge as a legit No. 2 WR in the next few weeks. Still not sure they have that guy here, and I wonder if it might have been worth it to give McCardell a $200,000 bonus or something like that, rather than have to march Bradford and Pinkston in here.

Rocky McIntosh could be something special. The red flags on his knee are a concern - it could be something that bothers him long term - but he has been feeling great since getting scoped in the offseason and so far so good this summer. His extra film work shows. The speed and athleticism of the LBs had to make you guys smile Saturday. London Fletcher was The Truth out there ... It's still awful early, but that unit looks much improved.

Another game like last Saturday, and I imagine the Brunell vs. Collins debate will roar across Redskins Nation. Again, we're still only in the middle of August for Darnerien's sake, but I sense a Brunell backlash out there among the bloggy peeps.

LaRon Landry is going to have to really fall off the planet to manage not to start from Week 1.

This could be a very big week for guys like RB Marcus Mason, FB/TE Pete Schmitt and CB Byron Westbrook. There's been a lot to like about all of these longshots, and they've met every challenge thus far and facing this opponent will show a lot. I like Schmitt a lot and if he shows he can grasp FB and TE I think he's got a good shot as the No. 2 FB/ No. 3 TE.

Suisham will be under the microscope again Saturday.

Want to get a good look at Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels as well. Cornelius Griffin will play Saturday after being rested last weekend, and both the first and second D Lines should get a lot of work vs. the Steelers. Will be interesting to see how some of the older guys, especially those coming off injuries, continue to progress as we get deeper into camp.

I can't understand why this light training camp that everyone has talked about isn't concerning more people. This was the same kind of camp run last year and look at the results. I'm sure I will be attacked for this but I definitely think it should be an area of concern. The team looked soft in the opener against the Vikings last year and I hope the same thing doesn't happen for the Miami game next month.

The training camp really isn't all that light. They're going to get their hits in preseason, so it really doesn't make a difference. You should want a lighter training camp considering we need the players to go 12 straight weeks without a break.

Well, is it light compared to other camps? That's where you start. Then the next question is, what have past camps for those teams meant to their seasons?

It could all be some evil conspiracy like McMetal is crying about. Or, it could be legit. They boasted about a tougher training camp. Have they followed that up? Yes or No?

I am with you. It definitely has me worried. I guess we are going to have to wait and see. If we don't see any improvements on Saturday, then it would probably prove that there is something to this "light training camp" rumor or it would prove that we have a long way to go.

My biggest concern is Portis. After reading that other article about Mike Barrow, who also had Knee Tendonitis, I wonder not if Portis can make it back, because he is a tough guy, but how effective he will be.

The light camp stuff I'm not so sure about, since the Defense showed an intensity not seen for over a year. Maybe just the O-line had a light camp, I don't know. :logo:

They didn't look soft, they looked incompetent. That held true for every game except when Springs was playing and the Linebackers were half-decent.

People seem to want to forget that the Offense got its act together during the season while the Defense rarely did.

You cannot compare Barrow, a washed-up LB, to Portis a 25-yearold RB in his prime concerning the tendinitis. Cleary, Portis hates camp and the preseason, he has said as much. The Chargers sit Tomlinson to prevent injury, and Portis wishes he had it as nice... I think this is a star player acting a little bigger than his teammates, but I do not think it is an injury that will play a factor into the season. He sits this week, practices next week, gets some light work in the 3rd preseason game, and plays a little more in the final game mark my words -- nothing to worry about.

Who said anything about a conspiracy? I just think he and Bram have been harping on this ad nauseam and it's overkill.

Is it the most brutal camp in the league? No. We have a team filled with veterans and stability at all the key coaching positions. No one is installing a new system or taking over a team that is notoriously contentious or undisciplined.

Having guys smashing on each other all camp is no harbinger of success.

There are plenty of reasons why we may not succeed as a team this season. I think it is wildly premature to speculate that the intensity of our camp will be one of them.

I really want Lloyd to show what he can do. I know he can be a legit #2 for us. I just really hope he can prove it to all of the negative ninnies around here.

I agree. I think Lloyd can be great, the Skins did too at some point. I mean the guy showed he can play with the Niners. But a receiver has to rely on his quarterback to get him the ball. No one should be judged that was playing with Brunell. IMO.

please dude. You've got a beef and its obvious. Go back and read what you post in each of these threads. Its the same thing over and over. Doesn't matter how different the topic is. You think that these are blasting for the sake of blasting. Why can't it be "calling it as they see it". Nobody in the media who's 1st name isn't Larry, and 2nd name isn't Michael, is heaping praise here. There ARE things to worry about.

Also, its not like the good isn't being mentioned also. Rocky, Landry, the D as a whole, etc, etc.

Give it a rest. If you hate these blogs, then don't even say anything.

I think the physical harshness, or lack thereof, in the Redskins training camp is being overblown. Every year there is a discussion about whether or not there are too many preseason games because it results in injuries and wearing down of players over the season. Yet people here want more hitting and such as if it will make the team better. It will lead to a higher likelihood of injury and fatigue over the course of the season. You can train well without killing yourself physically. In fact, none other that the great Bill Walsh eschewed an overly physical training program:

Walsh’s unique practice regimen also was initially considered controversial but was adopted by many teams. Rather than run punishing training camps like most NFL teams, he did more teaching and cut back on the physical aspect.

I just hope this O line can find their way before the start of the season. Everyone worried about Todd playing LG might have been right on unfortunately. I still wish they would at least experiment with the idea of moving Jansen and letting Wade play RT. I believe some players on D said Todd was a monster playing against them at RT in practice last season.

Big test this Saturday. I think the Steeler's have one of the best and deepest defensive lines in all of football.

I want you to be right in the worst way. Lloyd has talent falling out of his ears. I hope he has his head in his game finally, and seeing his body change over the offseason tells me he committed to making himself better. I hope these shin splints do not set him back.

Portis can sit out the whole training camp and preseason and get injured on his first carry of the regular season and then what??? Injuries are a part of the game. All I am saying is that we were 5-11 last year and sitting out of practice and/or training camp seems ludacris. Even for the great Clinton Portis. A professional prefects his/her craft, especially an athlete. :2cents: I just hope this light camp crap doesn't negatively affect our season.

So then you disagree with LaDanian Tomlinson sitting out in his first preseason game?

(and BTW it is spelled ludicrous, ludacris is the rapper :) )

You know what! All these "observations" and " Evalutions" and " Grades" Bla Bla Bla!!!!

Bottom Line is this: We were 5-11 last year.

Our 1st string Offense score 0 points on a ( my opinion) piss poore D.

Our 1st string D was good but there was no VY.

Our 2nd string qb is Garbage.

our back up o line was a turnstyle. Some of our 1st string O linemen did not play well and they are old.

All of our Recievers are 6ft and below.

Every time I turn around someone is hurt ( oh my shins! oh my knee!) I'm getting tired of this.

The play calling is predictable( Run Run Pass).

So we got to call a spade a spade and stop looking at things threw Skins color glasses. WE AR NOT GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM right now! Can we get better? Who knows. We have a long way to go.
