Have we forgiven Mark Rypien

I remember just two years after Rypien lead the Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXVI he was pretty much run out of town after disappointing seasons in 1992 and 1993.

He went from Hero to Goat after holding out before the 1992 Season and showing up to camp over weight and out of shape and it showed in his performance that season. Most Redskin fans that I knew were very ticked off at him after signing for the big money and not performing. He was cut by Norval, when he took charge, for refusing to take a pay cut and then went to Cleveland.

But it seems like time has healed the wounds as Redskin Fans think of him once again as a Super Bowl winning QB and not a guy went down hill after he signed for the big money. I noticed this when Ryp was on of the 70 Greatest Redskins in 2002.

Rypien was the ultimate overachiever. When he was drafted as a #6 pick and saw him play in the preseason you would never guess that this lumbering guy that was 6'4 and 235 would one day be a pro bowl quarterback.

The truth of the matter is that Rypien had 3 solid seasons with the Redskins.

He was a pro bowl alternate in 1989 after he threw for 3,000 yards.

He was solid in 1990 as the Redskins made it back to the playoffs and beat the Eagles in Philly.

Then he turned it up a notch in 1991 to be the NFC's premier quarterback that year with 3,500 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions.

I can remember everyone always wanting to replace him before the 1991 season, and afterwards it seemed that a lot of the frustration for the Redskins demise was focused on him. It's too bad that he left town on such negative terms, but that's the nature of the NFL. Time seems to heal, and we forget about the bad times and remember the good ones.

I don't know many who hold grudges against him? Whats to forgive. The most exciting offensive production I can remember as a skins fan. He overachieved for us, played his heart out. The guy lost his child and went through years of pain prior.

Rypien is a class guy.

Never had ill feelings toward Rypien. The NFL is very much a show me what you've got then I'll pay you league, he deserved to get paid.

92 wasn't a bad year, 9-7...should have been 11-5. Byner and Erivns did nothing that year, tough to win with zero running game.

If memory serves, in 93 he was hurt the first few games of the season and our defense was terrible, ended up like 4-12 that year.

Watching the Super Bowl run of 91 is one of my earliest and fondest Redskins' memories, I could never have ill will towards the guy. I do, however, remember there being a lot of questions about him and bad feelings about his ability before and after that year. No matter what happened before or after, that was one of the greatest season performances by a QB ever on one of the greatest single season teams of all time. We were truly dominant in every aspect of the game that season.

I lost my mom to a brain tumor the same year he lost his child. Him shaving his head in support of his child going through chemo inspired me to shave my head, too. my mom always wanted to know what was going on with Ryp's situation up until the very end. After his loss it wasn't long after that she passed away.

Ryp will always have a special place among Redskin fans and among me.

I'm not exactly a grudge holding kind of guy anyway, much less over a football player who though he played for my favorite team, hasn't done so for alot of years. Nothing to forgive as far as I am concerned.
