pratik97
So this guy at work is describing the play in the Redskins/Titans game towards the end of the game for the Redskins TD. He said the refs made a bad call because Rattay was blatantly tackled going for the fumble and you since he never had possession that should have been a flag on the Skins. Now I dont know the exact NFL rules however if a particular player is going after a loose ball he is free game to tackle right? What is the exact ruling on this? He's arguing the refs blew the call and I'm saying I've seen it a million times in the NFL (Not making it correct but I thought it was legit). Anyone? mel25
as far as i know you're right. if not, what's the call? holding? he was going for the ball and got hit, there's no rule saying you can't do that. and like you said, it happens all the time. pratik97
He's saying it should be holding. They were both lunging for the ball but he's saying since Rattay never had possession he was blatantly tackled going for the ball. It wasn't a block but a deliberate tackle. Vinnick
There was a live ball on the ground. It was a hard hit. Nothing wrong with it. ask him to cite the specific rule.
roqnap1
I don't think he can be tackled....but he CAN be blocked. It's all up to the Refs interpretation on if it was a tackle or a block.

Reic
gound ball = fair game, I am sure #75 wanted the ball too, Rattay was only in the way of him lunging as well.

Well it obviously wasn't a block being from behind like that. Don't even think you can say the Redskins guy was attempting to recover the ball, it was more tackling Rattay. Guess I never really thought about it but of course I still think I'm right. Both guys lunging for the ball, contact was made and Rattay goes down like a paperweight. No foul
Zazzaro703
This is the same as when a WR gets a hand on the ball with no chance of catching it and then gets creamed by the defense. Our DB pushed him, which was a great intelligent play and legal as far as i know. ARE took a shot on that quick out pass that Campbell threw over his head, was that worthy of a flag? I think not. skinsfan51
Looked like a tackle to me. I wondered about it myself when I saw it.
mel25
if i remember correctly he tried to push rattay away from the ball. and even if he did tackle him, what about when defenders don't know a guy has fumbled and people tackle him? they don't call holding in that situation. and even if your coworker is right, just say "so." we were up by 1 even if we don't get that td. Califan007 The Constipated
Rattay was NOT tackled...he was pushed/blocked on his right shoulder and right side of his body...NOT pushed from behind. NO tackle, NO push from behind. Everything was 1,000% completely legal. In fact, #75, after pushing Rattay away from the ball, went after the ball himself...he didn't lay on top of Rattay, didn't even bother trying to keep Rattay from getting up or still going after the fumble. #75 fell down right along with Rattay, then immediately started scrambling for the ball on his hands and knees. Watch the video again, people...geez lol

Area51
As far as I know, that play was legal. Anytime there is a fumble, you see people blatanly hold, tackle and do anything to stop other players from getting to the ball. I never once saw a flag thrown for anything like that. If I were you, I'd take Shyster's advice... Tell him to kiss your ass.
SKINS FAN #56
now its just an excuse for titans' fans to use against us.. a loss is a loss, it happens..just like our 2nd game against philly in '04, just like when alstott fell short of the goal line against us in '05 but they said it was a TD.. $hit happens, deal with it (saying to to whoever it is arguing with u at ur workplace) besides, it wasnt even a bad call..ive seen it happen a million times..even though the qb didnt have full possession, i think it counts when the ball touches him

illone
When a player is going for the ball, it's considered incidental contact if the other player falls down. Rattay was basically blocked from behind, but since the defender was going for the ball there is no flag.

After he hit Rattay, he starts to get back up to go after the ball...and a Titans defender pushes #75 back down from behind then goes after the ball himself. #75 definitely did not think his job was done after Rattay was out of the way, he still saw the loose ball on the ground in front of him. MSB 21
As far as I was taught Loose Ball = Fair Game The only stipulation I could find was on advancement............. http://football.calsci.com/TheRules9.html On a play from scrimmage, if an offensive player fumbles anywhere on the field during fourth down, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If any player fumbles after the two-minute warning in a half, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If recovered by any other offensive player, the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble unless it is recovered behind the spot of the fumble. In that case, the ball is dead at the spot of recovery. Any defensive player may recover and/or advance any fumble at any time.
Spear
He got enough of his side that it wasn't a block in the back. Nor was it a tackle, because falling on him was incidental from the clean hit.
pratik97
Is there a clip of this in the Flicks forum?
elkabong82
It wasn't a hold, and it wasn't really a tackle. Rattay was pushed down from behind, kind of like how players block on special teams, blocking downfield, etc. The play was legal, and was a smart move by the defensive player.
