Help me win an argument at work re: Skins v. Titans game!!

So this guy at work is describing the play in the Redskins/Titans game towards the end of the game for the Redskins TD.

He said the refs made a bad call because Rattay was blatantly tackled going for the fumble and you since he never had possession that should have been a flag on the Skins.

Now I dont know the exact NFL rules however if a particular player is going after a loose ball he is free game to tackle right?

What is the exact ruling on this? He's arguing the refs blew the call and I'm saying I've seen it a million times in the NFL (Not making it correct but I thought it was legit).

Anyone?

I don't think he can be tackled....but he CAN be blocked. It's all up to the Refs interpretation on if it was a tackle or a block.

Well it obviously wasn't a block being from behind like that. Don't even think you can say the Redskins guy was attempting to recover the ball, it was more tackling Rattay.

Guess I never really thought about it but of course I still think I'm right. Both guys lunging for the ball, contact was made and Rattay goes down like a paperweight. No foul :D

This is the same as when a WR gets a hand on the ball with no chance of catching it and then gets creamed by the defense. Our DB pushed him, which was a great intelligent play and legal as far as i know. ARE took a shot on that quick out pass that Campbell threw over his head, was that worthy of a flag? I think not.

if i remember correctly he tried to push rattay away from the ball. and even if he did tackle him, what about when defenders don't know a guy has fumbled and people tackle him? they don't call holding in that situation. and even if your coworker is right, just say "so." we were up by 1 even if we don't get that td.

Rattay was NOT tackled...he was pushed/blocked on his right shoulder and right side of his body...NOT pushed from behind. NO tackle, NO push from behind. Everything was 1,000% completely legal.

In fact, #75, after pushing Rattay away from the ball, went after the ball himself...he didn't lay on top of Rattay, didn't even bother trying to keep Rattay from getting up or still going after the fumble. #75 fell down right along with Rattay, then immediately started scrambling for the ball on his hands and knees.

Watch the video again, people...geez lol :)

As far as I know, that play was legal. Anytime there is a fumble, you see people blatanly hold, tackle and do anything to stop other players from getting to the ball. I never once saw a flag thrown for anything like that. If I were you, I'd take Shyster's advice...

Tell him to kiss your ass.

now its just an excuse for titans' fans to use against us..

a loss is a loss, it happens..just like our 2nd game against philly in '04, just like when alstott fell short of the goal line against us in '05 but they said it was a TD..

$hit happens, deal with it (saying to to whoever it is arguing with u at ur workplace)

besides, it wasnt even a bad call..ive seen it happen a million times..even though the qb didnt have full possession, i think it counts when the ball touches him

i don't think you can tackle per se. but you can blatantly hold someone. i don't think you can clip, facemask, or block in the back.

I just watched it again three X in a row. He didn't tackle him, he pushed him, and never tried to get to the ball. It seems that his focus was hitting Rattay so he couldn't get to the ball.

After he hit Rattay, he starts to get back up to go after the ball...and a Titans defender pushes #75 back down from behind then goes after the ball himself. #75 definitely did not think his job was done after Rattay was out of the way, he still saw the loose ball on the ground in front of him.

He better not! Williams would have benched him for sure. :D

As far as I was taught Loose Ball = Fair Game

The only stipulation I could find was on advancement.............

http://football.calsci.com/TheRules9.html

On a play from scrimmage, if an offensive player fumbles anywhere on the field during fourth down, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If any player fumbles after the two-minute warning in a half, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If recovered by any other offensive player, the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble unless it is recovered behind the spot of the fumble. In that case, the ball is dead at the spot of recovery. Any defensive player may recover and/or advance any fumble at any time.
