Classic extreme skins flip on Todd Collins.

I love how this entire board has been calling for Todd Collins to be cut for two years basically. He comes into the first preseason game of the season , completes 5 passes against practice squad players, and now there are multiple threads and gobs of posts calling for a promotion.

Even though it was Brunell who was sharp in the scrimmage and Collins who looked abysmal. Even though Brunell is a former Pro-Bowl quarterback that took us to the playoffs two years ago and damn near was was back in Hawaii that season.

Im not trying to toot anyone's horn here, I'm not big on either guy. They are old and immobile. But are backup system is actually pretty good I think. One is veteran who has started tons of games in this league who would not be fazed by having to make a sudden appearance, and the other is a system guy who can help teach our young starter and has a very firm grasp of a very complicated offense.

Our depth chart will remain the same. JC-MB-TC. Anything else is silly. I can't wait until next week, when Byron Westbrook will pick a pass and everyone will be calling for him to start over Carlos Rogers or Fred Smoot.

Yep, it will change next week when Gibbs calls plays that Mark is comfortable to make him look good.. Collins will start getting sacked and throw into guys back.. Welcome to ES

Did I miss something or is Al still calling the plays? Unless you're implying that Gibbs will take over and call plays so he can make Brunell look good?

Im saying Gibbs will have plays that they will make Brunell looks good and tell Al a few plays that should be run for mark

So the idea here is to make Brunell look good and Collins bad? For what purpose? If in fact they're looking out for the best interest of the team, then it would make sense to call plays that both QB's can run and let the best man win.

Thier are a few of us that have always had Collins over Brunell, you can go back and look at my threads anyway. I dont know what it is about Mark Brunell, he has never ever EVER been the best quarterback on this team and yet he gets most support? It's just not acceptable that well he is Joe Gibbs guy. Gibbs 2 has had a free pass and it is not right, especallly going into his 4th year! If he keeps Brunell on the roster, then Synder needs to do something. Serouisly

Pre-Season...

Say it with me now...

Pre-Season!

You're getting on Gibbs already and we haven't even played a real damned game.

Get a grip.

I dont know if a side of Todd Collins comes with that serving of youth... :2cents:

TC is no spring chicken true but you got to start somewhere. May as well break up the click going between MB and JG first.

That's what we've been saying the last 15 years. Always making excuses.

Excuses?

It's preseason. We're the only damn fanbase in the NFL to get this dismayed/hyped about preseason.

Remember Osaka?

Yeah, that season went real well for us.

I remember Osaka. I didn't buy my super bowl tickets then either.

In Osaka our starters sucked as well.

I judge preseason by how our starting players play against the competition. Our starting offense played an entire half, against scrubs in the 2nd quarter, and couldn't muster a single point. They played sloppy.

I have seen this for the last 15 years, I hope it's not more of the same.

I plead 'guilty' to the charge raised by the original poster. :stick:

However, I was influenced by all the ES reports in training camp on how badly Todd Collins was throwing, and how we needed to have new blood for the #3 QB. Consequently, I thought Collins might be ripe for retirement, or maybe elevated to Asst. QB coach, or something.

However, I will point out it's been hard for us ES fans to point to many Collins highlights to defend him. I think we've never really seen how well Collins can play, because whenever he's been brought in -- the Redskins coaches been checking how well their second string offense could play against opponents' first string defense. (I recall earlier preseasons when Collins was running the third-string and scrubs versus the opponents second string.)

Last night was the first time I can recall when Collins came in with 'parity' -- everyone was the third string. True, Collins performed versus the third string, but apparently this allowed Collins to stop running for his life long enough to show that he's still got the stuff to be a decent backup.

Okay, for a brief while, I did contemplate replacing Collins, but even at that brief point in time, I wondered whether ES fans had really seen what he could do. So, as my defense against the 'flip-flop' charge being raised, I offer defense exhibit, #1 -- a post I made on August 5 on whether ES fans had really seen Collins abilities showcased properly.

This forum needs a permanent kool aid vending machine for all the flippin and bandwagon pushing we do.

Yet, Collins played well. He deserves his congrats and maybe that performance and another strong performance will help him keep his 3rd position and push Mark for #2, but I don't expect nor want him to take number two.

I had posted that I would rather keep Bramlet than Collins, so I guess I fit the OP's description. Brunell looked really bad, again. He should have this Offense down and be making his reads better. I don't know if he isn't maybe a little too comfortable as a back-up? I know it is the first preseason game, so I will make no judgements yet, just observations.

Collins seemed very poised and even faced pressure well and delivered. Brunell seemed like a short guy throwing to short receivers with big tall guys in between.

I want to see Jordan Palmer play and get another look at the two veterans. Nice to ponder this with a winning mind. 1-0.

I've always been a big fan of Brunell but we wore him out last season. What I saw last night was a guy who was no longer mobile enough to roll out but still tried anyway resulting in multiple sacks. He made a few good short throws on quick routes but he also made some really bizzare bad throws too. My dad, who is always very cynical when we look bad, described it as, "his brain knows what to do but his body won't let him."

Then Collins comes in (at that moment I admit I was demanding to see Palmer), throws some great passes, the run game opens up a bit, and we take the lead in what was looking like an embarassing shut out.

In the scrimmage, Brunell didn't have to worry about the pass rush. When he's not under any pressure I'm sure he can still get it done but that's not going to happen the way our O-line was looking.

I've noticed so far that all the older QBs around the league are looking really bad so far. Perhaps it's a fluke but for now I put Collins in the lead for #2 QB.

From where I stand its not so much a pro-Collins thing as it is an anti-Brunell thing. Sure the guy is a vet but he's not even a solid option anymore nor has he been for the last two years, so why in the world are we using up a roster spot with him?

So please don't confuse advocating Collins at #2 as a flip, its just that he's the best option that we have for that spot IMO.

Well, If given the choice between MB and TC, then TC. TC seemed more comfortable in the pocket than MB. I don't know, it just seemed like he didn't have to struggle to get something going like MB.

Then again, I didn't want to see Bramlet leave. I feel like he should have been kept over the two older QB's. Let go of one of the older QB's, keep Bramlet 'cause of youth, and let him learn from the older QB who would have kept the backup spot.

My two cents.:2cents:
