Don't Sleep On Clinton Portis (Mod edited title)

After reading many a post on this board ranging from our o-line play to the Champ Bailey trade, and scattered throughout all of them seem to be the idea that Clinton Portis may not be the great rb he once was. I hate the fact that people forget how good this guy was/still is. One injury-plagued season last year is his only blemish an otherwise exceptional 5 year-career that saw him excel in Denver in his rookie and sophomore campaign then come to our Skins and continue his success. Take for example, a fellow Skins fan who happens to think that the Champ Bailey trade was one that shouldn't have happened:

He would have stayed if we gave him his money...

ill wiegh in the options...

#1 corner in the league or a good rb that is injury prone, while we have a very capable backup

im thinkin the #1 corner in the league

or one who thinks Betts should be seeing a majority of the carries...

All we need is JC to be decent....to basically hand the ball to Betts 25 times a game, and then to throw a few deep balls so there aren't 7 guys in the box every play.

Low interceptions......High handoffs to Betts.

That puts us in the playoffs......in spite of our D line.

Clinton Portis is a top 5 rb in the league, and he will be healthy this year to prove it. Excluding last year's injury-shortened season, the only year CP didn't have 11+ tds was his transition year with the Redskins and the only time he rushed for less than 1300 yds was never. Also, in 2005 he became only the third runner in league history to reach 1,500 yards in three of his first four seasons. Champ Bailey is a top 5 cb...but to say Clinton isn't a top 5 back when healthy is blasphemy. 1700 yds 18 tds this year...you heard it here first. Don't sleep on Southeast Jerome.

Hail.

Good post, im so sick of people thinking that CP is now an injury prone RB,or that Betts can relly be better or even just as good. Cp will have a great year.

how many different injuries does he need over a 12 month period to be considered injury prone?

i mean, not even Shawn Springs gets 3 DIFFERENT injuries in 12 months

Do u know what injury prone means? I does not meen, that you get hurt 3 times in one year and poof your injury prone. Injury prone means that it is a recurring problems over many YEARS.

would u rather have the best corner in the league who never gets hurt or CP?

Portis won't sniff of 1700 yards this year. Especially after the monster year Betts put up.

And I'm sorry, but Portis is NOT a top 5 back in this league.

So CP gets hurt and misses a season and now he is no longer a good back? I like the trade this is a Joe Gibbs, POWER running and we have seen that CP can do what Gibbs likes.

CB is a great player, def the best in the NFL at corner. He did NOT want to be in DC any more. He was going to leave and be a FA, we got CP out of the situation.

I would do the trade 1000000 times. When CP is healthy he is GREAT.

It doesnt seem like you understand what someone like Champ could do for this defense...and as we saw last year, our running game didnt miss a beat when betts came in

Who are the top 5 then ?

LT, LJ, SJ, ?, ?.

Please don't talk about losing Champ, he did not want to be here. :2cents:

You seem to be ignoring the fact that Champ no longer wanted to play here. Please read.

BETTS IS NOT CP, he never will be, how many times did Betts fumble? He fumbled 6 times in 9 games you want him to be are starting back?

Yes Champ would make this D better, anyone can figure that out. But Champ was leaving anyway, so we traded him for a GREAT Rb.

i am with you that Portis is a great running back

and considering the fact that Champ was leaving anyway, i am saying that i WISH he would have stayed because he would have helped the team more

I agree, i wish we still had champ, but he wanted to leave and given the situation i think we made the best of it by getting CP.

Good man, we need a duo in the NFL now-a-days. CP and Betts will be great.

Portis and Betts on offense

Taylor and Landry on defense

all 4 are young

looks like we have a great core of players on offense and defense (not to mention all the other young talent on both sides)

:eaglesuck :gaintsuck :dallasuck

I think Betts breakout was more a function of the o-line really meshing(not that he isn't talented) but I think that cp could have done 1800+ last season w/ the same number of carries.

What a good post for your frist post, welcome man! I agree with you, though i do think Betts is pritty good.

Again.

Bailey did NOT want to stay in DC.

yes i'm sure he wouldnt have stayed for the contract that denver gave him

That stance that Bailey took was all about money:

The Redskins had hoped to sign Bailey, one of the team's most popular players, to a new deal before the start of the regular season. They had proposed a nine-year, $55 million contract with a $7.4 million signing bonus and $7.3 million in other bonuses.

But Bailey had numerous problems with the structure and other details of the offer. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he had sought a contract that would make him one of the highest paid defensive players in the league.

Eric Schaffer, a Redskins negotiator, said the negotiations were halted by mutual agreement and that he hoped "fast-paced negotiations" would begin near the end of the season.

Asked if he was disappointed, Bailey said: "You would think they would be disappointed. You figure they would want to keep the guys that they want here. It's all in their hands; they run the show."
