So, now that #756 is in the bleachers, its time to stand and be counted. Sure, we all have an idea of who has what opinion, but what is the real feeling of ESers in regards to the new home run king? What do the numbers say?

Pro-Barry:

  • He never knowingly took steroids or HGH.
  • He has never tested positive for steroids.
  • He was a great baseball player before San Fransisco.
  • Other sluggers who are accused/admitted to taking steroids, did not have Bonds' longevity and were nowhere near Hank's record.
  • One of the best hitters of all time - before/during/after steroids.

Anti-Barry:

  • He admitted to taking HGH, who cares if he knew what it was.
  • He went from a 185 lb. weakling to a 225 lb. beast seemingly overnight.
  • His hat size allegedly went from 7 1/8 to 7 1/4 even with shaving his head.
  • His shoe size allegedly went from 10 1/2 to 13.
  • His jersey size allegedly went from 42 to 52.
  • He is very truculent and standoffish with the media.
  • Galdurnit, I just don't like him.

So, stand and be counted ES - where do you stand on Barry?

I fixed these so they reflect my views.

  • He admitted to taking HGH, and I believe that he knew what it was and is lying about his knowledge or he acted irresponsibly by not investigating what was being put on his body.
  • He went from a 185 lb. weakling to a 225 lb. beast seemingly overnight, and if strength doesn't help then why bulk up?
  • He is a jerk and a baby, but then mood swings are normal for those on roids.
  • Its irrelevant that he never tested positive because "the clear" was designed so that it wouldn't be detected by the current tests.
  • His involvement with BALCO casts serious doubt on his credibility, its like having a contract with a drug dealer and claiming you never used their product.

Thing is, I suspect a lot of professional sports players take steroids. If it was all about the drugs, who is it that people think is also about to pass the old record? With or without drugs, he's done something others have not.

That said, preseason starts this week. Football is here. As an O's fan, I haven't had much to chear about in baseball since our manager of the year was fired shortly after winning that award. For all the grief people give Snyder, they should realize how lucky we skins fans are.

Hank Aaron is still the home run record holder. Anyone who thinks Bonds did it legitly, well, I have some confederate cash for you - it's just as good as his record.

Sad thing is that he could have broken the record cleanly. He was that good a player but he chose to do all the roids - yes, he did them, over and over again - so he is a cheater and a phony. Just like McGwire and Sosa.

Ken Griffey is the only clean, active player with 550+ homers.

The one thing about Barry is if you look at his numbers there was only year where it is crazy the 73, heck the guy hit 46 in 1996 when he was clean. This is not like Sosa where he hit 60 homers in what 4 or 5 years and then the rest of the time wasn't close.

I think what we will eventually find out is he took the cream and clear to recover from his knee surgery, and that tied in with his workout regime he become what he is today.

If he ends up with like 800 then I will feel better about calling him the HR king, if he only ends with 10 more then Hank then I will have a problem.

I think that you need a lot of skill to hit a baseball. hand/eye and all that. But, when your hat size increases, and there are just so many people who have been invovled with the drugs, and claim he was connected. I just don't know. Overall, its not good for the sport.

If an investigation finds out that he was lying this whole time. I think the record will be tainted until somebody else breaks it.

I will say Bonds was classy with Bacsik the Nats pitcher:

After both players were pulled from the game, Bacsik took the unusual step of visiting Bonds in the Giants' clubhouse to congratulate him, and Bonds, unsolicited, offered him an autographed bat. "To Mike," it read. "God bless. [signed] Barry Bonds."

"He just said, 'You're going to be a good pitcher, and I'm going to enjoy watching you on TV in future years,'" Bacsik recalled. "He's the greatest of all-time. Giving it up to Barry Bonds is nothing to be ashamed of."

congrats to BB, he obviously played within the system as the system allowed whatever he did, just like they allowed McGuire. As far as A-rod's potential to break this record goes, it'll be all the more incredible, but for now, like it or not, Bonds is the HR King.

btw Jrock did you mean "not"?

"I can't help feeling skeptical that he would____have broken this record without the HGH."

No - if you're skeptical of something, you don't think it will happen. So being skeptical that he would not have broken the record is the same as saying I think he would have broken the record anyway. If you're skeptical that he would have broken the record without steroids, you don't think he would have. :)

He didn't say what the guy should do with the ball - just that he didn't want it back. If the guy wants to sell, more power to him. I would hold on to it or give it to the Hall.

Really? Do you give your winning lottery tickets away too? Because I would love to have one, if you ever win. :)

Really? After you fought & clawed your way through a scrum to get that ball, you'd give it to the Hall of Fame?

That's going right in the safe, until a week later when I sell it.

Congrats to Bonds. I don't like you, but I'm glad I got to see the moment last night.....
