scskin
It takes me 15 minutes to get on the net after I turn the computer on. I have tried just about everything(at least I think I have). Any suggestions?(except buying a new computer).
redskns21
Takes you 15 minutes due to what? Do you have to launch a connection software or something? What Operating System are you running? What browser? What type of internet service do you have, DSL, Cable, Dial Up?

The fifteen minutes is just to get ON the net. I don't have disconnection issues once I get on.

Coach Williams
Do you have Norton? lol.....Are we gonna restart the norton crap again...... I get so sick of ppl rippin this program.....I've used it for every computer I've ever owned gaming and basic use since 1999 and never had a problem...... Until another brand such NOD32 or Kaspersky posts a larger definition file online I am not budging...I've used at least 15 different AV brands @ work in the past 2 years and I see no reason to switch....a 15 minute lag isn't gonna happen because of any security suite. Sounds more like an old harddrive looking to take a dump..... Get a Mac. Mac is playing along with the planned obsolescence of the common market just like everyone else......the motherboards in those Mac Books are awful.....At least 7-10 come in a week. Yer better off buying a PC and just putting the PAC OS on it to save $400+

thehogs
I'm no expert ( ) but what kind of wireless set up do you have? I have a Belkin G+ MIMO. My PC plugs straight in to it but my daughter uses it for wireless connection on her laptop. Speed is no problem at all. One other thing - you may have a trojan of some kind? I had a real problem with my PC that got slower and slower and slower when using the internet to the point that it was freezing up before I could even use it. Turned out there was a trojan on the hardrive. I would maybe do a full spyware/trojan check (I notice you dumped Norton 'a few months back'....). Freeware stuff I've used: http://avg-secure.com/download/?gclid=CJqh9KKz5I0CFQrnlAodansmtA http://www.comodo.com/ http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ (spybot - search & destroy) apologies if you have this or the equivalent or done a spyware check, hope you get it sorted. :helmet:
twa
Do you have the same problem using Internet Explorer? I would say a corrupted program or a firewall problem ,no excuse for DSL to take that long:whoknows: Do what hog said and update firefox :2cents:

Please.....tell me who has a bigger update file and I will concider this correct......I don't care who has the nicest customer service or how easy the program is to use. If they aren't the biggest to database size ( FOR VIRUSES, WORMS & TROJANS ) there's no point it using a company who is lesser in quality. I know there is this common ground with trojans and malware so i several scans kaspersky does beat norton HOWEVER, if you are using webroot or spyware DR. ( #1 & #2 in spyware ) you don't need kaspersky's hybrid program. As for that other program.......I wanna play with it.......do they have a trial???? Buddy Dude
There could actually be a million things causing it. Instead of going through the hassle of most things named, even though they very well could be the problem, start with the basics and work your way up from there. First thing you should do, is click on the start menu, click control panel, then click on network and internet connections. Next, click on the icon for internet connections. When the window opens up, it will either display 1 or 2 internet connections. If there are 2, right click one, and disable it, and right click the other, and click repair. If there is just 1, right click it and click repair. After you do this, try getting on again. If it doesn't help, then try the other suggestions. It happens to me a few times a year, and almost every single time, this has been the issue, so since it's the easiest solution, it would be the best to try first. Symantec makes norton antivirus, and they make their symantec antivirus. the way it was explained to me is like its kinda like how ford makes mercury cars but thier packaged under a different brand. it doesn't make much sense, but that's apparently the way it is. :whoknows: after look at their official site, it appears that norton is supposed to be more for home computers while symantec corporate is meant for businesses (especially since when purchasing a license for symantec online, you need to purchase at least 5 licenses)
Baculus
Yeah, running a repair may help - I've seen this issue previously, with repairing the connection successfully resolving (in more ways then one) the issue. I would have suggested clearing your ARP cache, but the repair will do that for you. For whatever reason, it sounds as if you have a resolution issue of some type; you may also want to clear your browser cache, cookies, etc. Are you hardwired or wired? In addition, when you are attempting to go online, do you try various websites, or just fire up your browser and let it sit at your homepage? Power cycling your network devices, such as your DSL modem/gateway and router, is worth a shot: Unplug the power on your modem for a minute (and then replug the power back into the device), and repeat this process on your router for 15 seconds. You may also want to try a tracert on a domain, such as disney.com, to determine if you have any sort of connectivity: Go to Start > Run > Enter "CMD," click OK, and enter in tracert disney.com (or whatever domain you choose). If you receive a tracert response, then we know at least you have some connectivity, and you will also see if you have any issues with any "hops" between you and your destination. As a further suggestion, make sure you do not have IPv6 installed as a protocol - this can cause some connectivity and negotiation issues. (If you do, I'd advise to remove it, since you are unlikely to be using this protocol for any reason.) Of course, it is also worth a shot to have your DSL provider conduct a line test on your DSL to ensure there aren't any issues related to your service. (Provided you have also attempted some of the viral/malware clean-up as previously suggested...) The issue may ultimately be your network device, as a final note. Gee, thanks Dell! I just wish they wouldn't install the Google desktop search, even if we request they leave it off. I end up having to MSCONFIG out most of the junk they stick on their workstations. swisha
I don't understand the problem clearly. Are you saying your computer takes a long time to load, or your internet connection is slow? You can try a lot of things to fix the slow load: -typing msconfig on your command and deselect the programs that you don't want to load during startup -defragmenting your disk -delete the shortcuts on your desktop as too many slows startup -get a faster processor If your internet connection is slow, log into your router settings and check the configurations. Contact ISP if problems continue.
jbooma
Not to hijack, but whats the benefit of vista?I have a copy, but never installed it. if you have vista on a good machine it is a very nice os the problem though everything still does not work so i would wait i think once companies switch they will see a dramatic difference with work productivity with the new tools, microsoft has put a lot into their new office, vista, and work programs as for the original poster you need to be more specific of your problem meaning when you turn on your computer once you click on IE does it take 15 minutes, does it take 15 minutes for you computer to recognize the wireless network etc...?
