New Haven, CT

So it looks like after living in the DC area for awhile I might be moving up to New Haven, CT to work for my friend's company...anybody know the area? Any thoughts on it...

I actually live in a small town within New Haven County...about 12 miles outside of New Haven. New Haven is probably similar to DC, although on a much smaller scale. There are your good areas of town, and the areas you want to stay away from. The real estate market has kind of leveled off...no significant drop in prices...but at least its not as crazy as it was the last few years.

If you have family/kids, you may want to look into one of the surrounding towns for schooling purposes - Hamden would be a good choice. There are several good school systems in the surrounding towns - not so much in New Haven itself.

It's been many years since I left the night life scene, but if that is your thing, New Haven has it pretty good in this area. Gotta give those Yale kids something to do... :)

Oh...and you might think you have tasted good pizza before, but it will not compare to a couple of the pizza joints in New Haven.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask away. And if you do end up moving, and need any help at all...let me know. Be glad to help out.

All I know about New Haven from my mother in law and Fox News, is they have the most dense populaion of Illegal immigrants in the country, because the city encourages them to move there for work, benefits, etc.

Well considering where I live in DC...I highly doubt there are any places in New Haven that would really scare me...I'm thinking about getting a place in West Haven.....because the job I might be getting is in Shelton, CT

Shelton is a very nice place to live and work. I know Shelton much better than New Haven. That is actually closer to me than New Haven - next town over. West Haven is nice because you are at the beach, but that's about all it has to offer. I would much prefer the Shelton area. You should be able to find better housing/living/schools closer to Shelton. Much, much better than New Haven...

where about do you live?

In Ansonia, right near the Seymour town line.

New Haven used to have a bad rap for violence, and like I said in my first post, there are areas you want to stay away from...but it's improved quite a bit in recent years. Ten years ago they were competing with Bridgeport for most murders in the state - about one every week - but things have improved dramatically in that sense.

hahahaahhahahahahahahahahahahahaha....

Yeah New Haven is a real rough place.......

You'll be fine, especially if you're familiar with DC or Baltimore.

New haven's actually got a pretty cool little bar scene, live music, and the Yale architecture is so beautfiul they film several movies up here.

Also, it's commonly considered the best place in the US for Pizza. As Skinsnut has said.

I live right next to him in Seymour.

I have a ton of friends in West Haven, you might get better deals in New Haven...although if you're only renting it might not matter...but West Haven has some insanely high property taxes cause the town can't balance its budget ever without nudging them up.

I work in Shelton....where are you gonna be taking a job? We might be working in the same building.

As Skinsnut has offered feel free to ask me any questions about New haven or the surrounding areas-don't believe the astonshingly misinformed hype some have put here.

Like to see the facts on that one...considering states like Cali and Texas probably dwarf them in sheer #'s....

What does "dense" mean.....the most in one block?

I was going to tell him to PM you fwo40 because I knew you were more familiar with New Haven than I am. Good to see you popped into the thread.

I didn't get the illegal immigrant comment either? I think that whole immigrant ID card story probably got blown out of proportion and now folks outside the area think New Haven has a problem? :whoknows:

I'll explain. New Haven, CT publicly invites illegal immigrants to move there. The offer them bank accounts, driver's licenses, and health benefits. Based on percentage of the total city's population, they have the highest concentration in the country of illegals.

In sheer numbers, LA has over 6 million people. If only 1 million are illegals as the estimates state, than that would mean about 17% of LA is illegal immigrants.

New Haven has about 125k residents, and if 75k were illegals, for example, that would make 60% of the city illegals, see what I'm saying.

Also, back in June when feds raided the houses of illegals in New Haven and surrounding areas, mayor Destefano had laws passed that give the city the right to decide whether or not to raid houses of suspected illegals when they haven't been charged with a felony. As a result, illegals from surrounding areas have flocked into New Haven, making it the premier destination for illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Don't believe it? Go on the city's website, and read the mayor's press releases, and read the city info page, you might be surprised.

I understand this, but based on quotes from the mayor are you coming up with stats you've extrapolated?

Cause I gotta tell you....I live right there and New Haven does not have that makeup on the surface.

Do you actually have the %? Or are you repeating hearsay based on this controversial (which I don't like for the record) policy?

I can think of at least 2 cities in this state alone: Bridgeport and Waterbury that have had far worse problems in recent years with illegals.

Also I have to question any census of illegal citzens whom you would think would try very hard to remain a secret...perhaps new haven's #'s have skyrocketed on paper lately b/c they are now getting these benefits and feel more comfortable being accounted for....

I knwo there were plenty of stories in the news around here about families torn between acknowleding they were in fact illegal, and actually applying for these benefits.

Bottom line, anyone moving to New Haven will not be able to distinguish this particular problem as worse than most other cities. Particulary not larger cities where thousands and thousands are probably still hiding out.

Is the famous Toad's Place still open. They've had some pretty good bands in there over the years.

Yep. They closed for a few months due to an issue with underage drinking (kids were getting in the side door and sneaking beers), but I think they're reopening this month. I've seen everyone from Weird Al, to Buckethead, to Slayer to Dick Dale there.....

The article I linked to in my previous post indicates the estimate is 3K to 5K illegal immigrants in New Haven out of a population of 125K people. I find it hard to believe that is the most dense population of illegals in the country....

That sounds far more reasonable to believe.

Hmm well I live in Columbia Heights in DC....not a great area but not as bad as some...so I highly doubt I will be afraid in New Haven.....I won't mention the name of the company that I will be interviewing at because I haven't gotten the job yet but needless to say it is a cool company. It is in the tech industry.....yeah I have been looking at rental properties in the area and figure I'll rent for a bit and then save up enough money and buy my own condo. How is the beach area there? I really like sailing and wouldn't mind taking out a sunfish or something like that every week... I've heard about Toad's and that is why I would move to New Haven and not any of the surrounding areas....also....does anyone know about public transportation between shelton and new haven?

The beaches are typical new england beaches the biggest being hammonaset which is 4 towns away.

Public transpo, there is a Train that runs the shoreline and has a commuter rail so you will be fine if you dont want to drive.

Sunfish sailing in the Long Island SOund will be tough because the current is more than a sunfish can handle. You will need to come my way towards deep river to sail a small boat like that.
