Bugel, the Redskins' assistant head coach-offense, is pondering the team's three-year offensive rut -- the lack of big plays and touchdowns. "Let me just say this -- you've got to throw the ball down the field. That's the bottom line," Bugel said. "Say no more. Get vertical. Ver-ti-cal." Joe Gibbs ended his retirement and reassembled a staff of longtime assistants intent on reprising the glory years when his Redskins bludgeoned opponents on the ground, and finished them off with aerial artistry. The combination was successful from 1981 to '92, during which Gibbs won three Super Bowls. Fans knew what to expect from Washington's offense, and it delivered with rare exceptions. Yet, as Gibbs's fourth season back approaches, the Redskins are still seeking offensive stability, rediscovering running success but lacking a sustained downfield presence. There have been built-in excuses -- whether Gibbs's staff adjusting to a very different NFL in 2004, or the players adapting to associate head coach Al Saunders's new offense in 2006 -- and flashes of brilliance. But players and coaches agree that an erratic deep game has much to do with a tepid scoring offense, 5-11 record last season, and 21-27 mark since Gibbs returned. We've never found a receiver to compliment Moss and we would be "atrocious" if we didn't have Cooley. Lloyd was a "bust" and Randle-El had a sub-par season. We simply have to take the pressure off Moss. Just imagine Calvin Johnson being a skin. Koolblue13
Pound the ball with Rock, Portis, Betts and Sellers In the flat and short with Betts, Cooley, Sellers, Yoder, Sellers and Portis Make them come up and respect the ground and pound attack, then. Deep to Moss, ARE and Lloyd. We have the talent and the coaches. All we need is the QB. I hope we do, because it won't be that hard behind our line. He hasn't played a down in the NFL yet and isn't even the #1 on his team. I don't even know if he is the #2, is he? Let it go man, we had no shot at him and got LL instead. As stated earlier, the horse has been dead for a while, leave it alone.
Siven
We need a second receiver to step up worse than Rosie Odonnel needs a stomach staple. It is a little difficult to throw it deep when Moss is doubled.....unless Lloyd or ARE really step it up. This is probably the most overlooked weakness on our entire team, and the key for our success this season. Sure, teams are going to run it down our throat.....but if we can score quickly, we can offset some of that. I still believe either Betts or Portis....plus Lloyd and a draft pick for Calvin Johnson would have been the greatest trade in team history. We could have still kept the sixth for Landry.....but would have opened the field up big time. Come on Lloyd and ARE! Portis = untradeable, Lions had Tatum bell and TJ Duckett. Mike Martz likes to air it out. Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, CJ would be a great passing attack, probablythe best trio of wideouts in the NFL. Portis is untradeable because of his cap figure, plus people aren't to high on his possible injury concerns. Lloyd's value was near zilch, plus his cap hit, and then what draft pick would be worth the #2 overall, UNLESS we threw in our #6. Tampa offered these draft picks, and they STILL got turned down 4 36 64 68 #2 is 2600 points Those picks were 1800+540+270+250=2860 Now, thats about fairly equal. Tampa Bay was rumored to also consider throwing in next years draft picks. If you want to build a contender, you do it by making a trade like that (If you're detroit), and you acquire these picks and draft well.
Siven
The draft is over and we could not get CJ for anything we had or have. Time to get over it.Also, we have a QB that WILL throw the ball downfield. Moss just has to be healthy and fight for space. I don't see Steve Smith having problems getting open, and what do the Panthers have that we don't? We have a better ground game, better O-line, better TE and better WR's. We just have to execute. I agree, people think, Moss is too short and it limits our offense. Moss is probably the best receiver in the league when it comes to reacting to the deep ball. Don't worry Kool JC is going to be the QB we wanted Brunell to be. PS--RonPaul is the man!
Taylorfan2179
We need a second receiver to step up worse than Rosie Odonnel needs a stomach staple. Hilarious. Touchdown Redskins
Hilarious. But seriously you still thing we shoulda traded Portis or Betts, lloyd and a draft pick for CJ? Thats nuts. Honestly, I woulda done this in a heartbeat, especially if I knew we'd sign Blaylock. I've followed the NFL and NCAA in great depth for a long time now, and CJ is by far the most talented WR I've seen. Putting him with Cooley, Santana, and ARE would be unfair to defenses. CJ is already more talented, polished, and athletic than 75% of the WRs out there, including Lloyd. Giving up our second-string RB, pick that turned into Laron Landry (when we have PP and signed Stoutmire), and Lloyd who had one of the worst seasons a #2 WR has had in the NFL would be a no-brainer for us. CJ has the work ethic, the hands, and the durability to become one of the best receivers this game has ever seen. The only way I would not regret making such a deal is if Laron Landy becomes Ronnie Lott or CJ becomes Mike Williams or Brandon Lloyd becomes Mark Furrey.
