Warpath's John Keim weighs in after today's practice --

"DL Update: Second-year Anthony Montgomery still hasn’t shown us much. He’s very big in the middle because of his 6-foot-6 frame, but he still plays too upright. He does have power, but his feet aren’t all that quick. Any plays he makes will be from strength."

I watched him at camp last year and he showed flashes of dominance then. The only guy that could really do anything with him was Randy Thomas. I hope he can bring that through to game situations.

Indeed. Even as a late-round rookie he made Jansen look stupid in one-on-one drills. I can't say for sure that he'll pull it together long term but he could end up being an absolute menace on the interior of the line if he gets some good work in the next couple of years. :2cents:

Yeah alot of people, including me didn't question the physicla skill but the desire to put in the extra work.

If we see his play in regular season allows for a rotation on the D-line and we dont suffer on the run/pass it would be a nice surprise but that still doesn't mean we should not look at using a high draft pick in 2008 on d-line since the starters will be a year older and old enough to be a grandpa.

Hmmm kind of goes against everything that was said about him in this thread. Guess we are just going to have to wait and see.

im going tomorrow to see the dline in particular, itll be interesting to see how these guys do in practice. hopefully the positive reporters are more accurate than the negative ones.

Yeah, let us know what you see. I hope one of our young DTs emerges into a future starter.

I'll reserve judgement myself until I see him do it vs someone else's goods. We've been burned by the 'practice warriors' before. Guys like a certain ex-Gator who caught everything in practice but punked out over and over again when it counted.

Doering, Reidel, or the other one?

the ex-Gators aside from Jacquez Green didn't have the physical talent to play in the NFL, so there is really little comparison to current players like Montgomery or Golston who do have the 'ups' to be NFLers. The question now is how high the 'ups' are on these guys.

I'll be looking for your thread. Your are going to create one, aren't you? :)

Acctually the knock on Golston was that he had a major injury early like freshman year and then got arrested in a bar fight like his sophmore or junior year defending a teamate. His work ethic was never in question, that was Montgomery.

Hmmm...maybe I got them confused.

He's a two gap. He has to be able to stand up 2 offensive linemen. You do that by planting your feet and being strong. Maybe he does need to work on getting lower to explode up and stop the initial surge. I'm not watching him so I can't say.

If he can stand up 2 OLmen he will be doing his job 'cos it will free up Grif/Golston to do their 1 gap penetration shizzle.

Working as intended?

Sweet will be nice to hear from someone who knows the difference between a 1 Gap and 2 Gap. Should shed some light on who is wrong, the ex pro lineman or the reporter you just have to have doubts about...

The Redskins drafted Montgomery who is 6'5 and 315 in round 5 after Mel Kiper said there were much better players available at that spot.

In round 6 the Redskins took Kedric Golston, 6'3 and 300, and again Kiper said that Golston had underachieved in college and was a questionable pick.

In 2007 we shall see who was right.

The early returns on Golston would seem to show that Kiper was wrong and that trying to translate college stats/performance to the pros for linemen is often a difficult feat.

We shall see with Montgomery.

When I saw him on the field last year the first thing I thought was even at 315 with his frame he could fill out to being 325-330 and still be a player.

There were also those who thought that if the proverbial "light went on" for Montgomery, he could be a first round talent given his frame and athleticism. I'm hopeful that these early returns are reflective of that happening. If any unit on our team could use a surprisingly good player emerging from the shadows, it's our D-line.
