jnhay
The Redskins drafted Montgomery who is 6'5 and 315 in round 5 after Mel Kiper said there were much better players available at that spot.In round 6 the Redskins took Kedric Golston, 6'3 and 300, and again Kiper said that Golston had underachieved in college and was a questionable pick. In 2007 we shall see who was right. The early returns on Golston would seem to show that Kiper was wrong and that trying to translate college stats/performance to the pros for linemen is often a difficult feat. We shall see with Montgomery. When I saw him on the field last year the first thing I thought was even at 315 with his frame he could fill out to being 325-330 and still be a player. I doubt Kiper can do the kind of scouting an entire staff of professionals can do.
SkinsHokieFan
i've heard that too, and i definitely hope he lives up to it.it was also said by fellow ofensive lineman that derrick dockery had the most potential of the entire group......... its also been said that brandon lloyd has the most potential of any of the WR's..... Wasn't Taylor Jacobs "uncoverable" in practice too? Man, tough crowd  Montogermy's size and quickness give him natural ability to play DT in the NFL. Again its a matter of being disciplined, mastering technique and being willing to work at it
Hooper
Wasn't Taylor Jacobs "uncoverable" in practice too? Yep. And David Patten compared Ramsey to Tom Brady. That was especially hilarious because those of us unlucky enough to catch a camp session that year saw Ramsey struggling to throw anything other than a pick. Loxley
i don't think mont's ability has ever been a problem. i seem to remember he dropped in the draft because of his work ethic; i even think there was an article about his attitude this offseason.he seemed to be that guy who was really good at every level he played at without working that hard and then last year got a dose of reality. hopefully, guys like grif and salavia took him under his wing and helped him in that department. it would be great to see him pushing the competition for the starting job. on a sidenote, i just ate a pepper and the pain in my mouth right now unblockable as well. sweet jesus! I read the same article in the WP I think. Heres to hoping the "short sharp shock" is paying off.
jrockster21
From what I've heard from an articlehe has all the talent in the world, but wasn't much of a hard worker. He just got by on his talent, but in the NFL, that just won't cut it. Hopefully he can push the other DT to play there best and make a name for himself. Then we won't look like complete idiots for not drafting or picking up a single D-lineman this offseason. For what its worth, Montgomery's coach in college was shocked that he dropped to the 5th round, because he was so talented. Haven't heard much about his work ethic (that was more of a knock on Golston coming out of school), but I think he'll be fine at DT.
HailfrmDEN
I thought Whiticker and Fabini were hurt last season. So you would have to give them some time to get back to their position. Plus look at all the picture of montgomery from last year. He had a big ol belly on him. If he lost the belly and gained weight, he probley has alot more muscle. jrockster21
Interesting. I've read other camp reports -- from John Keim I believe -- that said he hasn't looked good at all. It all depends on the reviewer. DT is a hard position to judge for a lot of people, because even when they look like they aren't doing anything, they could be doing their job. Since 95% of the media doesn't know a one-gap DT from their buttholes, I'd say we can't really trust any of their opinions.

Well, with Daneils being 34 and never that good anyway, if Jamaal Anderson ends up looking like a young Micheal Strahan (as John Abraham discribed him in Falcons camp) we'll still look like idiots. but at least we should be real solid up the middle with those 2 and London. Laxpunk2006
Hopefully Monty/ Golston/ Rocky/ Campbell/ etc. all look as good in games as they supposedly do in practice. This is good news but I'm not going to cream my pants over it untill I see it on the field.
milliondollarslim
seeing is believing. the skins will be fortunate to come up with one stud between Montgomery and Golston. they have only had a few practices anyway, too early to really tell. Chachie
Hmmm, either he has had a really good offseason or our O-Line is missing Randy Thomas and underperforming in practice. We will know for sure after the Ravens scrimmage. Too true.

posse87
Well if Golston is practicing with the first team Dline as expected and Montgomery the second team then I would expect that, but if he is going against Rabach, Wade and the sub for Randy then it is most definitely good news. Lets remember that Thomas isn´t even practicing yet.
HOF44
I watched him at camp last year and he showed flashes of dominance then. The only guy that could really do anything with him was Randy Thomas. I hope he can bring that through to game situations.

Haven't heard much about his work ethic (that was more of a knock on Golston coming out of school), but I think he'll be fine at DT. Acctually the knock on Golston was that he had a major injury early like freshman year and then got arrested in a bar fight like his sophmore or junior year defending a teamate. His work ethic was never in question, that was Montgomery.
JimmiJo
I haven't noticed what Matich is saying about Montgomery. However, I am not a former professional lineman either.
bobzmuda
Considering Montgomery showed flashes of incredible talent last year (moreso than Golston in my opinion), here's hoping he starts to put it all together.

That has already been the subject of an article this offseason. Motgomery has bulked up with 25-30 lbs of muscle while loosing the fat with the skins offseason conditioning program and he finally started seeing the need for diet changes. He had previously admitted that he never watched what he ate before in college in the offseason and this was the first time that he used a healthy high protein diet to increase his lean body mass, adding strength while increasing his overall weight and muscle mass. AFskinsfan
Could this be the reason we didn't address the D-line this year? Im not saying Montgomery and Golston are going to be pro-bowlers, but they at least are coachable and can fill in for the time being. ANY d-line draftee will take some time before becoming an impact player. Just look at Mario Williams last year. Maybe the line of thinking was to take the player that could have the greater amount of impact in the shortest amount of time. Landry definantly fits that bill. I really don't think any of the D-line players taken in the top 10 will be as much of a game changer than landry will THIS year. As far as the years to come, well I guess we just have to wait and see. I feel our D-line will be ok this year better than 06, but not quite 05. However, I think our LB corps will be the best its been in years! You've got youthful exuberance and tenacity in RM, you've got the trusted leadership and grizzled vet in LFB, and youve got the highly skilled journyman in MW. IT doesn't get much better than that! This is kinda retarded, but you can compare them to the Lord of the Rings Characters, RM would be the elf dude, LFB could be the Troll guy, and MW would be the human. Snyder of course is a hobbit! Weganator
well if both monty and golston can come along and be sturdy 2 gap linemen... then that means we can allow our ends to be more of speed rushers...... speaking of which..... i heard something about Hickman being back in camp... has anyone heard anything about how he is doing?? DirtySkin21
good, i hope he does do something for this team. hopefully we can be lucky enough to find a gem in hte late rounds ( that's all we ever have to pick from) so maybe this can be true. I just want to see it translate into the regular season.
TSO
*makes me feel waaay better*- you *posting that made ME feel waaay better* -you *Edit* Damn, going through this thread has left me wondering where all the negative nancies came from. They've been hiding in the woodworks for quite some time now. Aint nothing like some optimism about the Dline to bring em out!!
