Not-so-special teams

It's often said that if you win two out of the three parts of the game (offense, defense, and special teams), you win every time. The Texans proved that last week, winning a game despite only gaining 50 total yards of offense because they dominated on defense and special teams.

We forfeit special teams every game.

I was totally unimpressed with Bruce Branch. I guess his one-game tryout is over. Cortez doesn't have much range -- those 40+ yarders were too much for him. Our punter is a rookie, so I'll give him a break -- and that blocked kick is a protection issue first, although he could have gotten rid of the ball quicker.

Some people might argue that Jarrett's average and net are second in the league -- but that's only 10 punts, and the one 74 yarder really impacts that. It's not statistically relevant. He needs some serious coaching.

But we really need to address this in the offseason. We need a reliable kicker and punter, and we need some special teams demons. We need kick returners and we need hard-headed kick coverage specialists.

This is getting embarrassing.
