China
Hot, hotter, hottest: NMSU sets Guinness chili record By ASSOCIATED PRESS February 16, 2007 LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Paul Bosland recalls taking a bite of a chili pepper and feeling like he was breathing fire. He gulped down a soda, thinking, "That chili has got to be some kind of record." The Guinness Book of Records agreed, confirming recently that Bosland, a regents professor at New Mexico State University, had discovered the world's hottest chili pepper, Bhut Jolokia, a naturally occurring hybrid native to the Assam region of northeastern India. The name translates as ghost chili, Bosland said. "We're not sure why they call it that, but I think it's because the chili is so hot, you give up the ghost when you eat it," he said. Bhut Jolokia comes in at 1,001,304 Scoville heat units, a measure of hotness for a chili. It's nearly twice as hot as Red Savina, the variety it replaces as the hottest. By comparison, a New Mexico green chili contains about 1,500 Scoville units; an average jalapeno measures at about 10,000. DoGood28
TWICE AS HOT as the previous hottest?! That is frightening. As I understand it, the process to measure Scoville heat units is to actually take a bite and measure how many squirts of water it takes to quench the pain. According to Alton Brown at least who I am a big fan of.

DoGood28
Alton is great. My wife and I actually TIVO him... LOL. I don't go quite that far but I have seen nearly every episode over the years. He just seems like he would be great company and and a great friend. Would anybody be crazy enough to eat one of these suckers? I wouldn't. The 12th Commandment
Ahhh, our little contribution to society. The study of chilE, the fruit, is one the specialities at NMSU (my Alma mater). It's also my second strongest addiction after the cigs. I can't go more than week without eating me some good hot chile. ChilI is the stuff with hamburger and beans that they make in Texas. It's one of those goofy distinctions we make here in Cruces where we grow more than anybody else (not those hot little ****s though). Thought y'all should be informed.

The 12th Commandment
Ok expert. So is the Scoville measuring process I mentioned above correct? Everything you've ever wanted to know about chile. http://www.nmsu.edu/~ucomm/Panorama/fall2002/center.html This is a paraphrase from the pdf (It must be old because it doesn't list a few chiles I know of but the explanation of the Scoville test is good) link following: "The Scoville test is a refined, systematic approach. It was the first laboratory approach used to measure heat in chiles. In this method a human subject taste a chile sample and record the heat level. The samples are diluted in the lab until heat can no longer be detected by the taster." So according to that you were pretty close although they add water to chile to dilute it rather than see how any drinks it would take. I've found the best way to stop the pain is to take another bite. Eventually you pay with that method too though. On a less appealing note, the hot stuff makes you pay twice, if you know what I mean. http://spectre.nmsu.edu/dept/docs/CHILE/ChileHeat.pdf Apparently there is another more scientfic and accurate method, but it's expensive. zoony
I would just kill myself instead of endure that. :ciao:  no kidding... I would seriously have to think about it... or break into a dentist's office and steal some novacaine and a syringe. My wife would love that... "Honey! when you're finished feeding the baby, can you come here? I need you to do something for me... "
Teller
Most 10% OC (pepper spary) carried by LEOs is rated between 1-5 million Scoville units with the average being about 3 million. Here's my question. I've been peppered sprayed in training 3 times, and gotten more than my share of "tastes" on the street. Why in the HELL would anyone essentially EAT pepper spray willingly??? drums and skins
Pshh... I'll stick to pure Capsaicin, thank you. Besides, this type of heat has been recorded in peppers elsewhere, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville As for the spelling...Chile or Chili... Its all correct, just regional differences. Much like whisky or whiskey. Both are accepted.

I have had a little, just a little, dab of some unknown hot sauce on my tongue, and it stuck with me for HOURS. It would go away, and come back. Go away, and come back. It was insane. I can't remember the name of it, but I was so miserable, it sucked.
