FEATHERS RUFFLE IN PHILLY OVER MCNABB REHAB

We've determined via conversations with multiple league and media sources that there has been, at some point in the not-too-distant past, a squabble in Philadelphia regarding the status of the rehab of quarterback Donovan McNabb's torn ACL.

As we hear it, McNabb was at some point determined to be behind schedule in his recovery from season-ending surgery to repair the injury that he suffered against the Titans. And McNabb has, on at least one occasion, blamed the delay on well-respected trainer Rick Burkholder.

There's a school of thought that Eagles coach

Andy Reid put the kibosh on McNabb's recent press conference due in part to concerns that McNabb would blab about the brouhaha.

Complicating matters is the fact that the players have a strong affinity for backup Jeff Garcia, who led the team to a berth in the divisional playoffs. An industry source tells us that guys like tackle Jon Runyan and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, both members of Reid's "veterans' committee" have expressed strong support for Garcia.

What the support translates into remains to be seen. We think it's unlikely that McNabb will be traded. But with Garcia soon to become a free agent, and a possible target for a starting job in, say, Minnesota, the Eagles will need to cough up the money to keep him around -- which would serve only to fuel the speculation that Garcia might have a shot at the job.

Reid: No news conference for McNabb

In a radio interview, the Eagles coach said the quarterback needs to focus on rehabbing his leg, not talking to reporters.

The potential for a quarterback controversy is always on the horizon for Donovan McNabb and the Eagles, but we couldn't possibly have known just how close the horizon was this time.

With the Eagles just five days removed from their disappointing playoff defeat to the New Orleans Saints and many of their fans still debating the cons and pros of punting on fourth and 15, coach Andy Reid fueled another storm yesterday when he pushed McNabb's mute button.

McNabb, for the most part silent since suffering a season-ending knee injury Nov. 19 against the Tennessee Titans, had informed the Eagles' media-relations department earlier this week that he would be willing to address reporters at noon today at the NovaCare Complex.

Reid, however, decided yesterday that the quarterback would not meet with the media. He discussed that decision during an interview with WIP-AM (610) in the afternoon.

"I saw nothing that would be beneficial for him to stand up there," Reid said. "I wanted him focusing on taking care of his business and his leg, and that's all that matters right now. He doesn't need to talk to anybody. He needs to take care of his business. That starts with his leg and that's where it ends. I'm the head coach and I get to make those decisions."

GARCIA TO TEST THE MARKET

In a development that could go a long way toward defusing the current controversy regarding whether quarterback Donovan McNabb is unhappy with the Eagles, backup Jeff Garcia said on The Tonight Show that he plans to hit the free-agent market.

"

I'll definitely be testing the waters," Garcia said, according to Don McKee of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I've got to see what's out there."

Our first question is this: What the hell was Jeff Garcia doing on The Tonight Show?

Next question: Why is it that Eagles coach Andy Reid slapped a muzzle on McNabb, but Garcia gets a national audience?

Of course, McNabb will get a chance to talk soon enough. As our friends Glen Macnow and Angelo Cataldi both pointed out during separate visits with them on WIP in Philly, McNabb is contractually obligated to conduct a press conference in the run-up to the Super Bowl as part of his Chunky Soup deal. And we have a feeling that McNabb won't be asked many questions about the Tantalizin' Turkey Chili (which actually is pretty good).

Regardless of what McNabb says next week, every moment that passes without a statement from him refuting recent reports of rancor suggests that the reports are accurate -- and/or that he has no interest in backing up his head coach, Andy Reid, who attempted to throw water on the stories on Tuesday.

Our guess is that the Eagles are hoping that the next five or six weeks will pass without incident, like a guy who squeaked out a silent one in a loaded car and who prays that no one notices the smell. The best outcome for the Eagles is for Garcia to get a significant financial offer to become the starter in Minnesota or Tampa. Then, A.J. Feeley would rise to the No. 2 position on the depth chart, and McNabb would be able to remove whatever stick might be residing in his rectal crevice.

We used to believe that the Eagles should fairly be criticized for not signing Garcia, who arrived in 2006, to a multi-year deal. But it now appears that, in light of the pile of poo in the middle of the living room that no one will officially acknowledge, the ability of the team to let Garcia walk away is the only way to maintain long-term love with the starting quarterback.

Not surprising. The "McNabb is a great leader" stuff usually comes from the Eagles front office and the media. If you watch the little things that go on at the NovaCare Complex you know that the players don't think of McNabb as anything more then another teammate. In fact, there have often been reports of teammates saying they are tired of all the over-inflated BS that gets poured on McNabb's large ego.

Last year TO held a birthday party for himself down at a night club in Atlantic City. The party was about a month or so AFTER he was suspended. Most of the Eagles defense -- including Trotter -- happily showed up and attended. Mugged for photos, signed autographs, the whole nine.

While all this was going on the media sat there writing stories about how the team was standing behind McNabb in the TO vs. Donovan controversy. Attending a party thrown by a supposed team wrecker during the season doesn't exactly show support for the front office's chosen guy, IMO. Keep in mind the party was also 64 miles away from where these guys live and practice.

The Eagles have done a great job suckering the media and the Eagle fans when it comes to McNabb. He's a great athlete but a mediocre quarterback. There's more to playing QB then having a huge arm and the occasional big run. Trouble is those plays are the ones anyone sees on SportsCenter.

Before McNabb got hurt, he was putting up MVP numbers. I'm no Eagles fan, but I've always been puzzled by all the anti-McNabb sentiment in Philly. Maybe he's not the ultimate leader, but he seems to handle himself with class. Garcia played great, but benefited from Reid figuring out the team needed to be more balanced -- I'm sure McNabb will as well. Hey, as a Skins fan, I hope the Eagles run McNabb out of town. I'd much rather face a 37-year-old Garcia.

Pretty schotty analysis of information that was secret to no one. The fact that everyone attended T.O.'s party was well documented in the local and national media.

Exactly. And you can say the same for Andy Reid too.

Trotter is always in the middle of drama, isn't he.

Reid sounds a little exasperated in that quote, although I don't know what his tone was. Could be he's just annoyed with the media and not McNabb, but it's hard to tell for sure.

Yeah I saw it front page in the Atlantic City newspaper and the Philadelphia Inquirer -- which I'm a 10-year subscriber too -- had it buried on an inside jump page. I never saw anything on ESPN or the other sports networks that made the big deal of it that it should have been. When someone calls out the "leadership" of your team and then the team members go and support the critic at a high-profile social event, that is a major, major slap in the face.

Die Hard,

Stop with the MVP stuff. That was all September media nonsense. When McNabb got hurt that hype had already died down considerably for some time. The guy was brutal against Jacksonville, literally threw away the Tampa game, and was well on his way to another stinker against Tennessee. The guy put up great numbers against the creampuffs of the NFC early on. Heck, take away one lng pass to Stallworth and the Skins keep him in check.

With the way things were going for LT and Manning by November McNabb had no shot at MVP and the Eagles would never had made the playoffs had he remained behind center (Remember they were mired in the middle of a losing streak when the "team leader" decided to unveil his new clothing line. Are you kidding me?).

Garcia rejuvenated the whole franchise with his selfless, team-first attitude. Brian Westbrook even said something like "the guys played hard once Jeff came in" last week following the New Orleans game. That's not the exact quote but that was the gist of it. It's pretty telling.

Looks like PFT had it right, considering the Inquirer story.

Notice Andy doing all the talking for Donovan? And Donovan being the good soldier by listening to Andy's advice?

McNabb is Andy's guy.

Is he the team's guy? Let's see after he loses a couple next year...

While I'll admit the MVP talk was premature - he had a ridiculous run through the first 5 games, no matter who it was against.

I actually believe it was a defense that started playing better, coaches who started balancing the offense better, and receivers making plays. Impossible to tell if they would have made the playoffs or not.

Garcia was/is great for this team. As a backup. I will take McNabb over the following starting QBs in the NFL (at this point): Grossman, Eli, Losman, JAX QBs, Vick, Delhomme, BradJohnson, Kitna, Carr, Romo sits to pee, Campbell, Frye, Culpepper/Lemon/Harrington, Simms, Trent Green, Pennington (iffy).

As a philly fan, I've doubted Reid in the past, but his ability to get the ship turned around midseason has made me look the fool. I think he is a very good coach. He has shortcomings, but he has been the best thing to happen to Philly since I've been alive (including Vermeil). I feel the same way about McNabb. Hopefully they will approach offense next year the same way they did the last 5-6 games, because I'd like to see how McNabb does with only 25-30 attempts per game.

Basically in a nutshell he was saying McNabb was pissed off because he wasn't allowed to travel with the team to New Orleans even though it's Reid's policy. He was claiming that Reid didn't even speak to McNabb about it beforehand. He also made a claim that Donovan has been telling some people he think his time in Philly may be up.

Take it FWIW.

Wasn't Eckel the moron who said LeCharles Bentley was in the Novacare complex hammering out a deal?

Damn I hope they keep Mcnabb as the starter. It is true, he if a great QB during the regular season, but in the paloffs you could always count on him dashing Philly's dreams. I will miss that if he goes.

Yeah, he was terrible when he led the Eagles to the NFC title game three times then the Super Bowl. What a scrub.
