I am a huge fan of Guiness, and it got me to thinking........I have never even tried many other dark lagers before. Are there any better than Guiness that you don't have to go outside the country to get, or is Guiness the tops?

For the record, Killian's, Yeungling, Etc. are not true lagers, they are beers that think they are lagers.

**edit** i have since seen the error of my ways through the education this thread tought me. i have also learned that stouts, like guiness would be my favorite.

and include price ranges if you can....Guiness is $7 a 4 pack here.

harp is from the same makers of Guiness. it is a lager.

Guiness is not a lager. It is a "stout".

(And thus Killians, Yuengling, etc... ARE actually lagers, you just have your beerology mixed up ;))

Thank you... beat me to it. :)

Lager refers to the fermentation process.

never heard of it....where can i get some, and how much?

Stella is a Belgian beer... becoming more and more available over here. Not sure if it qualifies as a Pilsner, but it is close. Very drinkable, very light.

But it is kind of the Budweiser of Belgium. There are much better Belgian beers. Problem is, you have to go there to get them, as they export very little. :(

And BTW, Yuengling IS a lager. It is a true lager in every sense of the word.

And a good lager at that. Just because something is readily available to you doesn't mean that it isn't good quality. :2cents:

Yuengling has a very clean, very refreshing taste with little to no "hoppiness" and aftertaste. Exactly the characteristics that a good lager should have. So what if it is available everywhere, its still good beer.

So what!

Stella is "Reassuringly Expensive". It is the Cristal and Hynotic for us middle to low class people. :silly:

I do, too, drink Yuengling and enjoy it very much.. when I am not drinking a Stella of course which is not often. ;)

Guiness is actually an ale. Beer can be broken down into two main categories based on the type of yeast used to ferment the beer. Lager is a top ferminting yeast, and the fermenting process is normally done at a lower tempeture and for a longer period of time. Ale yeast is a bottom fermenting yeast and is normally done at room tempeture for shorter periods of time.

Btw Belgium makes great beer. Chimay is one of my favorites. Stella Artrios is not a favorite of mine, too light. I can buy both Chimay, (it comes in a corked bottle similiar to a wine bottle) and Stella Artrois at Krogers

Any liquor store, really. The liquor store located in my hometown sells a 6 pack (can't get a 12) for 6.99. An expensive beer but, well worth the money.

i'm in virginia dude, our liquor stores are few and far between, and don't sell beer. they sell loads of liquor, and 4 or 5 wines. VA regulates the **** out of alcohol, we have special stores we have to go to, that are gov't controlled.

One and probably the ONLY reason why I am 'happy' to be in NJ. :silly: You can buy a case for $72 online. I am not sure how that goes but, all you need to do is severe your arm and leg as well as empty your wallet and you can get some Stella.

Stella Artois, ****es!!

Stella is the kick ass of beers. Nothing ever tasted so smooth as one of my favorite beers. Went to melbourne last year - if any of you go, make sure you go to Young and jacksons bar , they have some of the best beers I've ever tasted. I love alot of German and belgium beers. Most of the European beers are quite good.

In terms of American, I prefer the smaller breweries or Sam Adams. Most of the larger breweries like Bud suck ass.

Try Stella Artiois if you can find it. Its quite easy to find in DC.

The best lager is the stuff I brew at home.

Seriously, there are a bunch of good ones and it's tough to pick just one. I'm partial to ales myself. Can't beat a good hefe or dunkelweizen.

I am drinking a home brew as I type. A fine porter (ale), I brewed last year.
