mark327
I am having a discussion with a friend of mine who is a Cowboys fan born and raised in Md. That is enough right there to make me :puke: Anyhow he claims that the Dallas Cowboys (America's Team) recieves it's name from having consecutive sellouts and also selling the most ( more )merchandise then any other franchise in the league . I question these 2 reasons myself . I more or less under the impression that the Cowboys of the 70's sort of self proclaimed that title to them when they were winning alot during that time. Looking for some feed back or facts from people on this if anyone knows the real reason for this so called title Of America's Team
jimster
your impression is correct - a self given title. One of the reasons George allen couldn't stand them.
jrockster21
I think its because in the 70s they won a few superbowls, and because the NFL wasn't as widely broadcast as it is today, they had the most air time out of all the teams. So a lot of people around the country became fans because they were successful (bandwagoners) and were on TV a lot, hence the nickname.

twenty-eight
You're correct.... During the Cowboys' first game of the 1979 season, a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals (which Dallas won 22-21), the television announcer introduced the Cowboys as America’s Team and the nickname stuck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Team

So a lot of people around the country became fans because they were successful (bandwagoners) and were on TV a lot, hence the nickname. Bob Ryan, the Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys in 1979. After preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film he had to come up with a title for the film. He was quoted as saying:"After the '78 season, the Cowboys had just lost a crushing Super Bowl to the Steelers. I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America's_Team :puke:

Warhead36
It was supposed to go to the Steelers actually but Dan Rooney didn't want that label on his team. The guy who used to run the Cowboys then, forgot his name, loved it because he was really looking for ways to market the Cowboys. He was also the guy that originated scantilly clad cheerleaders so we can't hate him too much.
TheFan
Dallas fan chiming in. Here you go. After each season, personnel at NFL Films put together highlight films of each team's games. After editor Bob Ryan prepared the tape of the Dallas Cowboys following Super Bowl XIII, he had to come up with a title. By 1978, the Cowboys had been on national television far more than any other NFL franchise. Dallas players, from Roger Staubach to Tony Dorsett to Randy White to Too Tall Jones to Harvey Martin, and on and on, were household names regularly featured on billboards and in television, radio, and print advertising. Considering the team's popularity - or notoriety, a term Cowboys haters preferred - Ryan came up with the title of "America's Team." It caught on. Ryan gives more detail on the link. http://groups.msn.com/DallasCowboysAficionados/howthename39america39s39cameabout.msnw Nice that I didn't have to type it out. Warhead36
The George Mason Patriots men's basketball team was referred to as America's Team during their improbable run to the Final Four of the 2006 NCAA tournament. According to an ESPN.com survey prior to the Final Four, a majority of basketball fans in 46 states were pulling for the Patriots to win the national championship. Mr. S
also, just think about what is an impression America gives off...Cowboys. Wild, tough, dirty men in America's midwest w/o care in the world and roping bulls, often seen as a fearsome animal. I think that is another reason, because Cowboys are an American concept, you don't really think of any other country when you think of Cowboys. Lions are worldwide, Saints are saints, Indians are found in Mexico and South America, Bengal Tigers are in India, Vikings are Scandanavian, but Cowboys are definitely American. Plus, Texas thinks they are better than everyone else, so when they get a team, they put as much of their egos as possible into it,
THEHEREAFTER
Maybe the skins should start a movement to become the NEW Americas team. D.C. is afterall, the Nations Capital? Makes sense to me. :whoknows:

Switchgear
The financial assistant on the project I'm working on is a Cowboys fan, who was born and raised in rural Virginia. She's a real country type, and it got me thinking about other people I've known like that who root for the Cowboys for unfathomable reasons. I think there is some connection between people who like country music, NASCAR, and the country lifestyle, and the Cowboys. That isn't to say all Cowboys fans fit that profile, or everyone like that is a Cowboy fan. It's just a bit of speculation.
PleaseBlitz
Its the NFL films thing. I heard Steve Sabol talking about it in an interview. Curiously, Landry hated the moniker because he thought it would fire up opposing teams even more, but the owners at the time or maybe it was GM Tex Schramm, liked the name for its marketing appeal, so he embraced it. The rest is history and sealed under court order.
HeHateMe
i appreciate the responses guys . I sure would like to see some Cowboy fans members respond , although twenty-eights wikipedia link will probly keep them away from this one . Why would that keep us away from it? God Bless Bob Ryan for coining the Cowboys as America's Team. Obviously, if it was such a big deal at the time, or anytime thereafter, it wouldve been changed. But they continue to refer to Dallas as this, so I guess it was meant to be.
HeHateMe
The Saints are America's Team For one season, this season, yeah, I'd have to agree. But I'll gladly let them have that this year.
