The mysterious 'Hey, That Laker Took My Cake' Caper

Lakers center Kwame Brown allegedly swipes a man's birthday treat in a Hermosa Beach incident, but the gooey case won't be prosecuted.

Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown isn't exactly a league leader in steals, but he allegedly scored one sweet takeaway in Hermosa Beach over the weekend.

No matter how you slice it, Brown, known for small hands that occasionally bobble passes on the basketball court, enjoyed a real cakewalk Saturday, according to a police report. For reasons only he knows -- and he's not talking -- Brown allegedly snatched a man's $190 2-by-2-foot chocolate birthday cake out of his arms.

Once he had the cake, Brown opted not to eat it, too; instead he allegedly hurled the single-layer chocolate dessert at the man, striking him in the upper back.

It all went down outside the Blue 32 nightclub on Hermosa Avenue.

It seems that several Lakers headed to the watering hole following their 109-106 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday, according to a Hermosa Beach police report. Just down the street, Alexander Martinez, the man who filed the report, was celebrating his 30th birthday at the Shore Restaurant and Lounge.

About 1:45 a.m. Martinez left the restaurant, his birthday cake in his arms, and walked north. Martinez told police he came upon Ronny Turiaf of the Lakers.

Martinez, the report said, asked if Turiaf would pose for a photograph with him. Turiaf obliged.

Martinez continued walking along Hermosa Avenue, then stopped with his cake in both hands in front of Blue 32. According to Martinez's report, Brown came along, grabbed the cake out of his arms and threw it at him.

The report gives no indication why Brown would do such a thing.

Frosted, the 5-foot-9-inch, 165-pound Martinez, tried to confront the 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown, but Brown got into a white limousine, the report said.

That's when Lakers forward Lamar Odom entered the food fight, leaving Pedone's Pizza. Martinez walked up to him and confronted him about the stolen cake. Another man believed to be Odom's bodyguard pushed Martinez into the street, yelling at him to get away from Odom, the report said.

Odom, known for his quiet demeanor on the court, apparently thought that was a bit much, telling his bodyguard, "Calm down, he didn't do anything," the report said.

Everybody quickly went their separate ways. Twelve hours later, Martinez visited the Hermosa Beach police station to file a police report on the purloined pastry.

Detectives looked into a possible case of "grand theft of a person" and presented it to the Hermosa Beach city prosecutor, who decided to throw the case out.

The Lakers were winging their way to San Antonio on Tuesday. Lakers spokesman John Black said the team was aware of the cake episode, but had been informed that prosecutors were not seeking charges.

Black had no other comment.

Played for Gonzaga...had a good college game. He might have had some heart issues his first year in the league:whoknows:

KWAME, SLAM!!

Yeah Turiaf had a hole in his heart or something and he had to have surgery and they weren't sure if he would ever play again. He's a decent player though.

BTW, **** Kwame.

Yup. Eff Kwame. The sad thing is: I'm not surprised...

...and to think, the Wizards got Caron Butler for that clown.

Will go down as one of the best trades ever. To think we got Caron Butler for that joke of a player is unbelievable. Butler should be an all star this year and one for many years to come.

Not to mention that Butler has more toughness in his little finger than ***** ass Kwame does in his entire body.

unfortunately, the better that trade becomes the worse the selection of Brown as the NUMBER ONE lottery pick becomes.

how many chances does a team have to draft the BEST PLAYER available? and the Wizards/Jordan totally f-ed it up..

Looking back at that draft, there were a lot of screw-ups made at the top. Chicago traded Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler and also selected Eddie Curry. Both Curry and Chandler have not panned out like a #2 or 4 pick.

Here were some other noteworthy picks from that draft:

Pau Gasol - #3 - traded for Shareef Abdur Rahim

Jason Richardson - #5

Shane Battier - #6

Joe Johnson - #10 by BOS

Vladimir Radmonovic - #12

Richard Jefferson - #13 by HOU

Troy Murphy - #14

Zach Randolph - #19

Brendan Haywood - #20 by CLE

Tony Parker - #28

EDIT:

Let's not forget Gilbert in the 2nd round at #31!!

And Mehmet Okur at #38, Bobby Simmons at #42

Yeah, it's hard to blame the Wizards when the lottery looks like this:

1. Kwame Brown

2. Tyson Chandler

3. Pau Gasol

4. Eddy Curry

5. Jason Richardson

6. Shane Battier

7. Eddie Griffin

8. DeSagana Diop

9. Rodney White

10. Joe Johnson

11. Kedrick Brown

12. Vladimir Radmanovic

13. Richard Jefferson

Is there a single superstar on that list? Is there even an All-Star? Pau Gasol went to the All-Star game for the first time last year, but there's nobody on that list you can really build a franchise around. It was just a crappy year to win the lottery.

Besides, the Wizards shouldn't complain because they traded Kwame for Caron Butler, and they've got the best player in that draft, Gilbert Arenas.

maybe the cake reminded of him of Michael Jordan?

I doubt the cake called him a flaming faggot:laugh::laugh:

Like others have said above, it was really a bust filled draft. Gil was the first player from that class to make the all-star team.
