Championship Weekend Picks, Pats, and Apologies

Last Week: 3-1

Playoffs: 6-2

Regular Season: 146-110

Record Picking Redskins Games: 8-8

After a subpar regular season, I may have had my best weekend of the year by insisting that New England would beat San Diego. It was an awful match-up from an emotional standpoint for the Chargers. It really makes you wonder about Marty's future in SD. Obviously, he's done a heck of a job getting them "close," but is it not painfully obvious by now that he simply will never get over the hump? But how do you fire a 14-2 coach? I say, that's why you don't hire him in the first place.

I would also put Brian Billick in the mix as someone who's record indicates he should not be on the hot seat, but who's results clearly do. I just do not understand how in 8 years, an offensive "genius" like BB can't figure out how to win more consistently with that moster of a defense. The Ravens performance on Saturday was truly pitiful-- as if they've never practiced or played together before. Baffling really.

As for this week......

New Orleans at Chicago: I'm wholly unimpressed with the Bears-- on both sides of the ball. Without Tommie Harris and Mike Brown, their defense is a shell of what it was early in the season. Seattle had every opportunity to put that game away, but they just couldn't make one key play. The Bears did a decent job of holding strong when they had to, but that was as unimpressed as I've ever been with a team winning a playoff game. Having said all of that, I simply think the Saints will run out of gas this Sunday. I believe homefield advantage will kick in, and the Bears will find a way to pull it out. It won't be pretty; and the Saints may have a boatload of "woulda, coulda, shoulda's," after this game, but I just don't think their defense will hold strong enough to win the game.

Bears 20, Saints 17

New England at Indianapolis: Well, well, well. From a storyline standpoint, this is a dream match-up for the league. This is all about Brady vs. Peyton and Billicheck vs. Dungy-- and it should be. In my humble opinion, this is IT for the Colts. If they don't win this game, then the Dungy-Manning marriage will never succeed. It will be officially finished, no matter how many more playoff appearances they make. This game represents a unique opportunity for redemption for those two against their nemesis of the past. And it's at home to boot. Now or never, never had so much meaning. This game will be close; most New England games are. Peyton will not wilt like he has in the past against the Patriots defense, but then again, the Colts defense will not dominate Brady as they did their previous two opponents. This game will come to those few special plays at the end. And that's all you need to know.

Patriots 27, Colts 24
