The lucky Saints

Seat Payton would have taken Packers HC job if he had had the choice.

Drew Bress would have gone to Miami if he has been offered a comparable contract.

Reggie Bush was going to Houston until the draft day.

Somehow, Saitns got them all.

Give the guy a break - everything did go the Saints way (in retrospect). Payton could have turned out to be a bum HC, Bush could have been a bust or gotten injured for the season early, and Brees might have gone to Miami (or reinjured his shoulder preseason). Everything has gone right for them so far, except for some injuries to their wideouts.

Offensive line has stayed relatively healthy;

Deuce's knee is holding up, and Bush is turning out to be very resilient;

Brees' shoulder is better than ever;

Saints' defense is playing above its talent level;

I see where this guy is coming from. It does appear as if this team is a team of destiny. Not sure everything will come together for this team like this again...hopefully they win it all.

And if Jack Kent Cooke hadnt been at least 67% insane he wouldnt have hired Gibbs or gone on dates with 18 year olds and stuff. Is he lucky he hired the SanDiego OC and was chasing women old enough to be his granddaughter?

If the Eagles hadnt hired Andy Reid they would never have won all those superbowls back to back!!!

See? Luck has nothing to do with it.

:laugh: Any other coach in the league, and it would be the Eagles who won 3 out of the last 4 superbowls, not the Patriots. :laugh:

If that was the case the 2002-2006 seasons would of been utterly miserable moreso than they were (despite the playoff run)

By Saints, do you mean Saints fans? If so then I guess you can say yeah we're damn lucky, just like fans of all winning teams. None of us had anything to do with the decisions made in the offseason.

But if you mean Saints' organization - then no it was not total blind luck. There's always some luck involved, but without a good front office, very few things that happened in the offseason would have happened.

Was Payton the hottest head coaching prospect in the offseason? There was an article a while back - Loomis watched over 50

interview tapes of head coaching prospect. Loomis has been a good GM. He engineered the McKenzie trade which was robbery to the Packers. He recovered some good draft picks for Ricky Williams. He's also drated some quality players over there years and managed the cap well. Unfortunately he has a tendency to defer to the HC on alot of drafts and player acquisitions, and that killed the organization in the Haslett years (after expending 4 first day picks on linebackers over the last six years, only one is still on the team, as a backup. Pretty ironic considering Haslett played linebacker. OTOH I think it works really well with a coach like Payton ) He didn't hire Haslett (that was Randy Muellers move), and this is his first HC hire. So given his history I doubt it was total blind luck.

About the Miami/Brees thing - sure I don't doubt he probably had a slight preference for Miami over New Orleans. But Miami wouldn't offer him the guaranteed money, which is like a vote of confidence in the NFL. He didn't want to be put in the same situation as in San Diego, where the organization loses confidence too early and drafts a high profile QB. By tying up alot of money in Brees, the Saints wouldn't be able to cu/tradet him easily. So it was a big risk. They didn't play games with his shoulder injury.

About the Bush situation - that wasn't pure luck on the Saints part. They had everyone convinced they would take Mario Williams with their 2nd pick if he was still on the board. Therefore the only team the Texans could have traded down with and still gotten Williams was the Saints, and they weren't interested in trading up.

There was luck in Colston, considering he was taken after Mike Hass who was cut (got a practice squad offer, but declined it) . But consider - the draft strategy was overwhelmingly about productivity and not about combine numbers. You could see it in their 2nd pick - Roman Harper. He was great at Alabama, but was overshadowed by other prospects at the combine in measurables. The same went for Evans, Ninkovich, Hass and Colston.
