Does anybody have what the redskins payroll will be in 2007 as of right now. I know they will cut some players, sign players and restructure some contracts but i am interested to know what the number will be without any of that stuff.

You tell me who they'll sign, who they'll cut, who'll restructure, who they'll draft, and what their contracts will look like, and I'll give you a pretty good estimate.

It's way too early to tell.

On top of that, payroll and salary cap are totally different animals, but technically the Skins are a little over the $109 million salary cap for 2007, but that's just because of funny accounting. There's a lot of dead money, and a bunch of guys (including AA and Lloyd) are due fat bonuses in March that are currently accounted against the cap in 2007. They'll actually be spread out. And there will be restructured contracts and maybe some players cut. Remember, only the top 51 guys count against the cap.

You don't have to be in cap compliance until the start of free agency in March, so there's just no way to tell right now.

Here's the updated version of this chart showing the Skins about 3M over the 109M limit with 51 players signed. At this point they only have 600K of dead money for 07 but that will rise as they make cuts. Between dead money and signing/option bonus allocations they have about 40m of cap charges that are written in stone. The rest is salary and roster bonuses that can be reduced by cuts and restructures. Each player must carry at least the minimum salary for his year's of service so you should allow 40M for that and another 10M for the draft practice squad and a cushion. As you make cuts more dead money accrues and when restructures are done more 07 signing bonus hit comes about so a good estimate of how much cap space they can devote to 07 acquisitions is about 10M.

Since you can prorate 07 signing bonuses over 6 years 10M of 07 cap space would equal 60M of potential signing bonuses if they were to restructure almost the entire roster down to near the minimum salary hit for each player. They didn't do that in 06. They didn't touch Jansen and waited until the end of the season to slightly redo Brunell and Thomas leaving the potential for about 10M of 06 cap space untapped.

Since there is a thread about salary, I have a question. If a player is suspended how, if at all, does that affect the cap? Like when Merriman was suspended did that affect the Chargers cap space, are they allowed to sign someone in the mean time. Are there a certain amount of games a suspension has to be for before it affects it? etc etc.

Pocono-

On behalf of all Redskins fans, thank you for your Salary Cap work. It is excellent.

I visit your site daily.

Thanks but that's not my site. That's PC in Oz who lives down under in Australia. I'm Pocono who lives in the high Poconos. PC does fantastic work keeping track of the Skin's cap situation......but what the hell else is there to do in Australia?

As for the question about suspensions when a player gets suspended he receives no pay for those games so the team receives a credit for 1/17th of the player's salary for that year for every game he misses. They are not allowed to replace him on the 53 man roster for those 4 games missed.

Great work, I'd been wondering about the cap ramifications. Man, 15 years ago, we never worried about this as fans. Weird huh?

15 years ago we never worried about Tampa Bay or Arizona making the playoffs. Come to think of it, we still never worry about Arizona...

I support parity.
