WFAN in New York's Mike Francessa is hearing that Tom Coughlin is likely to stay on as Giants coach, with Jerry Reese moving into the GM job.

This is not a confirmed report, but Francessa is generally very tied in with the Giants. It's uncertain if Coughlin will get an extension or remain as a lame-duck coach. Coughlin is 25-25 as Giants coach, including the playoffs. Reese is the in-house favorite to take over for Ernie Accorsi.

:applause: I know your all happy about this news

Reese is young up and comer who makes sense for the Giants. I'm not certain the FO thought he was quite ready. However they saw how coveted he was by other teams and knew they'd lose him.

Getting the team to the playoffs might have saved Coughlin, but even with a new contract, he'd still be a lame duck. He lost his team for goodness sake! I say they can him!

Then again I've said for weeks Parcells was going to be the Giants GM.:whoknows:

Thought I'd post this in here instead of starting a new thread....maybe we could create an official coaches thread or a thread for each team with an opening...??

On John Riggins show they said rumor has it Bill Parcells was interested

in coming back to Giants as GM, but team said no.

Here ya go!

GIANTS SAY "NO THANKS" TO TUNA

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that the New York Giants have rebuffed an overture from Cowboys coach Bill Parcells regarding the now-vacant G.M. job.

Based on various reports, Parcells is free to leave the Cowboys for next season and become another team's General Manager, but not it's coach. It could be that the Giants are reluctant to flirt with Parcells while he is still under contract with the Cowboys unless and until he decides on his own to leave the team. If Cowboys owner Jerry Jones were to conclude that the Giants were attempting to use the lure of the G.M. position to influence Parcells to leave a division rival in a lurch, Jones might cry foul.

Meanwhile, the same source who tipped us off to rumors of Bobby Petrino heading to Atlanta says that several assistants could be on the move out of Dallas. Whether that's a precursor to a departure by Parcells remains to be seen.

But there's no real, hard facts that points to Coughlin staying.

Again, I'll believe it when I see it. People who have been almost dead on about moves in the past are saying Coughlin is gone.

there's no real hard facts he's leaving either

in fact the longer it goes the more likely he's staying.... most of the top canidates will soon be taken

Giants: Coughlin is on hold

With the clock ticking down late yesterday afternoon, the Giants called a timeout. And for at least one more night, Tom Coughlin remained their head coach.

Of course, each passing day is an indication he'll stay much longer than that.

Yesterday morning, the Giants were hopeful they would release their final decision on the embattled coach's fate by the end of the day. But most employees of the organization attended an 11:30 a.m. memorial service for longtime Giants financial advisor Roy Posner, who died late last month. The service delayed meetings that entailed what VP of communications Pat Hanlon termed as "review/discussions."

Late in the afternoon, Hanlon said those talks "continue."

Such discussions are a positive sign for Coughlin. If the team was going to fire him, it likely wouldn't take three days of meetings.

A member of the organization said Coughlin is likely to return for at least one more season. The individual requested anonymity because the team has not made its final decision public. But barring a refusal from Coughlin to budge on a given issue, the decision will be to keep him as coach.

The individual also said it's likely Coughlin will get another year added to his contract to avoid "lame duck" status. Coughlin has one year remaining on his original four-year, $12-million contract.

Coughlin's agent, Gary O'Hagan, declined comment when reached at his office yesterday afternoon. Giants President and COO John Mara also declined comment when reached via e-mail.

The contract negotiations appear to be partly responsible for the holdup. But there might be other discussions, such as which coaches Coughlin plans to fire and whom he will hire in their place. The members of the front office probably want to make sure they're on the same page with Coughlin before they decide to retain him.
