Brunell Has Surgery-Hurt Week 2 @ Dallas?

So Brunell hurts his throwing shoulder in Week 2, severely enough that it requires surgery at season end...yet continues to play. Was he ever listed on the injury report? It was obvious that Brunell was hurt yet all we got was that he was super smart and fought his guts out as our season went down the tubes. Not that our flailing defense helped but if we had just scored a few more points in a few of the games...

News & Notes: Brunell Has Surgery

By Gary Fitzgerald

Redskins.com

January 8, 2007

Quarterback Mark Brunell underwent successful surgery for a labrum repair in his left shoulder on Monday, the team has announced.

Brunell, who is left-handed, suffered the injury in Week 2 at Dallas. He was able to play through the injury for the next seven games, even setting an NFL single-game record for 22 consecutive pass completions Week 3 in Hosuton.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Ray Thal at the Reston Surgery Center.

Brunell was replaced by Jason Campbell in mid-November after the Redskins started the season with a 3-6 record.

He completed 162-of-260 passes for 1,789 yards, eight touchdowns, four interceptions and a QB rating of 86.5.

Brunell's future with the team is uncertain, according to head coach Joe Gibbs.

I doubt it was a huge deal, cause if it was, I'm sure he wouldn't have been in there.

I've listened to Doc Walker all year say that it was obvious that Brunell was injured...well before the switch was made to Campbell. I really believe that Brunell put himself before the team on this one...and the coaching staff allowed him to get away with it.

This makes me slightly nervous that we haven't seen the last of Brunell as our starting quarterback...

Now there's the excuse that Mark was too hurt and now that he's healthy again he can play effectively and thus he gets the starting job back.

I don't question Joe Gibbs often, I trust what the man does for the most part, but this whole Brunell thing still has me scratching my head...

That's funny...because after reading the article and hearing Gibbs quotes as of late I'm even more convinced that Brunell won't be here next year.

I just hope you're right. I don't know. I can't get a read on Gibbs in the least bit. I fully admit I may just be paranoid on that issue...

That's a shame if it's true. I guess it could have happened, he did stick with Brunell too long. But with our defense, it wouldn't have mattered if Johnny U was under center.

I'm wondering if Mr.Brunell lied to MR.Gibbs about the injury?I think he put himself before the team becuse he knew if Campell started playing he would never see the starting job again!!!I hope he gets the boot for this one.Only way he stays if he agrees to league min. for a back up job!!!!Well Mr.Brunell that's two seasons that you have cost us at Quarterback because of your injuries and poor play!!!I hope you don't ever again!!!

this is also what happens when Campbell doesn't get even ONE snap with the regular offense along the way. Gibbs and Co. kept Campbell on the shelf and planned on having him sit inactive for 16 games even though he was the team's #1 draft pick in 2005. only Brunell's injury and poor play forced the team's hand.

this is the only team in the NFL that takes a player with a #1 pick and then makes him inactive for almost 1.5 years.

oh, you can add in Rocky McIntosh, who on a 5-11 team that supposedly needs athleticism and speed on defense, sat for 12 weeks while Warrick Holdman got to stink up the joint at WLB.

those extra 3-5 starts for Holdman after the season turned south didn't help the Redskins or McIntosh, all they did was delay the inevitable.

for that and for the general mismanagement of personnel on defense, I hope Lindsay and a few of the other assistants move on. This group needs some new blood and the decisionmaking on personnel needs to be put in the hands of an impartial front office talent evaluator.

the talent on defense has eroded each of the past two offseasons and that is reflected in the rankings, going from #3 to #31.

has there been another rapid descent in the NFL of this magnitude the past couple of years?

Same story, different year. Thank you Joe Gibbs for not learning from the past, and making the same mistake twice. Maybe you can apply this new knowledge to our history of trading draft picks?? I wouldn't bet my money on it. Joe Gibbs 2nd tenure can be characterized with either an inability, or a refusal, to adapt. This news is exemplary of that conclusion. Hopefully we'll never have to endure another Brunell start again.

You are an idiot, first off if he played through that injury then he deserves Kudos, I seriously doubt the coaching staff did not know about it. I have had a torn labrum and it makes it almost impossible to throw a football. The coaching staff went with Brunnell because they felt he gave them the best chance to win. Its not rocket science. and for the record I am not a brunnel guy I am a redskins fan. ets be real , if a guy who has been around the league forever like Gibbs did not think that Cambell was ready then he most likely was not. I agree that there are some coaching changes to be ade especially at LB coach but Gibbs has not lost it and he has not been passed by he just needs to adjust, you all freaked out about the O and he changed it even though his O is one of the best in the NFL (we just lacked the personaelle) now we have saunders and had to learn a new O. seriously you guys get a grip if we have another **** season then freak out but with the injuries we had and no depth what did you expect?

Brunnel should be cut...IMMEDIATELY!!! It's rediculous that he would steal the goal of every player & coach on the team...the playoffs and the super bowl....only becuase he's so selfish that he's so affraid of losing his starting job by telling any one that he's too hurt to perform at a level required to win games.

NFL record for consecutive completions? What a joke. One pass was over 5 yards.

Gibbs should be fired for allowing this to go on right under his nose.

Yes, that would be nice.

Gibbs loves Brunell...sticks by him with his struggles. Trusts him.

Late in season, Brunell "Oh, by the way coach...I was hurt in week 2"

Gibbs. "Really Mark...you never said anything"

Brunell, "It's OK, it wasn't that bad"

"But, did it affect your play?"

"Well, maybe a little...but come on coach"

"Come on what, Mark?"

"Uh...remember I saved your life?"

"Only God can save lives, Mark"

"But coach-"

"But nothing...you lied to me...I love Jason now"

Im sorry but there have been a ton of guys who didnt make their first starts until after their 1st season...

Pennington

Palmer

Philip Rivers

Culpepper waited a year

All of those guys, had "questionable" people starting for them their first year, or at least going into their first year.

I knew he was hurt and playing it down. He limited our passing game, thats why all the dink passes. I blame him first for like anouther poster posted putting himself before the team after publicly stateing that the team comes first time and time again. Hes selfish and thoughtless. Second, the coaching staff for not reconizeing the problem and making adjustments sooner but he's not the first QB to do this, Mark Rypen did it to us to.

I had great respect for the guy, that went down the tubes.

All I can say is, thank God in retrospect our defense was so bad and we were out of it so early, so that Joe had to pull the plug on Brunell. The only thing worse than the season we had would've been managing to eek out a couple of extra wins early to keep us in contention. We would've staggered across the finish line 7-9, with Brunell and possibly Collins at QB if Brunell couldn't play, no playoffs anyway and no PT for Campbell.

It was obviously a terrible, terrible season, but at least Jason got some good action and I feel really good about him. We can hit the ground running next year, so to speak. Can you imagine if we were now facing starting next season with the same QB mess we had this year? Brunell, Collins and Campbell w/ no game experience? At least we can be grateful for some little things.

He did the same in 2004. I thought it was obvious he was injured...
